7 Home Remedies To Fight Bad Breath Fast

April 29th 2021 at 07:04

Let’s face it, it’s not exactly easy to tell when you have bad breath.

Sometimes, it comes as a hunch after having a meal that might trigger it only for a while. And other times, it’s just really morning breath before a quick brush that clears it all.

But when it becomes persistent enough that you notice in the afternoon when you’ve not eaten a trigger, you might need to be concerned about it.

Even when in doubt, you can seek an honest opinion from someone you trust enough to be unbiased.

If it has been confirmed, there are some natural home remedies that can help get rid of bad breath.

What Causes Bad Breath

Built-up bacteria in the mouth can cause bad breath. This comes from bits of food that get caught in the teeth when we eat.

Poor dental hygiene also causes bad breath. Not brushing and flossing often causes the bacteria in the mouth to grow. There is also a thin film of bacteria known as plaque that builds up on the teeth and can cause a foul odour and tooth decay when it’s not brushed away at least two times daily.

All foods get stuck in the teeth. But certain foods like onions and garlic are more common causes of bad breath. Digestion of these foods releases sulfur compounds into the bloodstream. When the blood reaches the lungs, it affects the breath.

Experts say that although 90% of bad breath cases come from the mouth, there are times when the source is from other areas of the body. While acid reflux is one, others are diabetes complications and renal failure. There is also the diet factor to be considered. For instance, starting a new diet such as the keto diet may cause bad breath.

That said, let’s look at 7 home remedies for bad breath.

Home Remedies for Bad Breath

Good Dental Hygiene

Research has shown that poor dental hygiene is the most common cause of bad breath. This helps to avoid a plaque buildup in the mouth. Try to brush your teeth with a fluoride toothpaste for two minutes at least twice (morning and night) daily. You should also develop a habit of brushing your tongue regularly as bacteria can also build up on the tongue which can cause a foul odour.

Water

According to research, mouth dryness causes bad breath. The mouth naturally dries out while we sleep and this explains why breath is typically worse in the morning. To prevent a dry mouth, drink water constantly. A minimum of eight glasses of water daily is a good start to regulating saliva that keeps your mouth from developing bad breath.

Pineapple Juice

Pineapple juice is said to work well in treating bad breath, according to anecdotal evidence. To achieve this, try to drink a glass of natural pineapple juice after every meal. You can also chew on a pineapple slice for about one to two minutes.

Oranges

Oranges assist in developing a strong and healthy dental hygiene. Rich in vitamin C, oranges work in boosting saliva production in the mouth to fight bad breath. You should take oranges more often now.

Apples

Studies show that there are certain natural properties in raw apples that counteract the foul-smelling compounds in garlic.

Homemade mouthwash with vinegar

The acetic acid in vinegar fights odour-causing bacteria in the mouth. To prepare, add 2 tablespoons of white or apple cider vinegar to 1 cup of water. Gargle for at least 30 seconds before spitting it out. Repeat this once or twice daily.

Green Tea

Green tea works effectively in fighting bad breath, according to proven research that shows that green tea has disinfectant and deodorizing properties that can temporarily freshen the breath.

For optimal results, use green mint tea since mint is also a breath freshener. Prepare by brewing two cups of tea before going to bed and refrigerate it overnight. When it is cool, pour into a water bottle and slowly sip on it as you go about your day.

4 Natural Ways To Get Rid Of Pimples Fast

April 29th 2021 at 03:46

It’s not uncommon to have acne. Stubborn pimples on the face can, in actual fact, affect one’s self-esteem.

Innovations in medicine have, however, brought quite a number of remedies to help deal with the stubborn symptoms of acne.

But these ointments also come with side effects. And there’s also the trouble of finding the most suitable one that won’t cause more reactions. This is especially considering how delicate the human skin is.

This is why natural remedies are being considered now than ever before.

With a handful of these natural remedies, experts say that only the ones that have been scientifically proven are actually potent enough to get rid of the unpleasant – albeit common – skin condition known as acne.

However, that said, this guide shows 4 scientifically-proven natural ways to get rid of pimples and acne in the fastest way possible.

Moisturize with Aloe Vera

A tropical plant with leaves that produce a clear gel, aloe vera is a proven traditional remedy for bacteria and inflammation. It has also been proven to help in the healing of wounds.

Other skin conditions such as psoriasis, rashes, cuts, and burns have also been fought with the help of aloe vera and it yielded positive results.

Lupeol, salicylic acid, urea nitrogen, cinnamonic acid, phenols, and sulfur are all components of aloe vera and they have been proven to fight the bacteria that causes pimples.

Medical experts have also advised that aloe vera gel works better and more effectively when mixed with other remedies or ointments.

How to use aloe vera gel for pimples

  1. Use a spoon to scrape the gel out of the leaves
  2. When you want to apply other acne treatments to your skin, also apply the aloe vera gel. Alternatively, you can mix the aloe vera gel with the treatment and apply on your skin.
  3. Repeat once or twice daily

Apply Honey Mask

Honey mask is another natural way of getting fast results if you want to clear your pimples. A natural antibiotic, honey works in removing dirt and impurities from the skin. One of the fastest way to get good results is to use a honey mask.

How to use honey mask for pimples

  1. Add two tablespoons of honey to a cup or bowl.
  2. Then add one teaspoon of cinnamon and mix together.
  3. Rinse your face and pat it dry
  4. Apply the mixture of honey and cinnamon on your skin all over the acne and leave overnight to get desired results.

Use Cucumber Mask

As an anti-inflammatory used in treating puffy eyes, cucumber has many benefits in the skin. A natural remedy for pimples, the properties of cucumber produce fast results.

How to use cucumber for treating pimples/acne

  1. Peel one-half of a cucumber and chop it into pieces
  2. Put the pieces into a blender
  3. Add two tablespoons of fresh aloe Vera gel
  4. Add 1/2 teaspoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice
  5. Apply the mixture on your skin and leave it for 10-15 minutes
  6. Then rinse it off with warm water

Green Tea

The health benefits of green tea are not derived from just drinking it often. You can also derive benefits from it when applied directly to the skin. The properties of green tea include flavonoids and tannins which are known to be anti-inflammatory and also fight the bacteria that causes pimples outbreak.

How to use green tea for pimples

  1. Boil water
  2. When it is boiling, put in a green tea and leave it in for 3 – 4 minutes
  3. Allow the tea to cool
  4. Use a cotton ball to apply it to your face
  5. Leave it on for 10 minutes or overnight
  6. Then rinse your face with water.

5 Snorkeling Mistakes To Avoid As A Beginner

April 26th 2021 at 15:54

5 Snorkeling Mistakes To Avoid As A Beginner

It can get dangerous if you are not knowledgeable about the mistakes to avoid as a first-timer in snorkeling.

Although snorkeling is fun and enjoyable, the lack of proper knowledge about the dangers and conditions of the ocean can cause potential danger for a beginner.

Asides this, there are also some basic skills that should be learnt to help you have a wonderful time during your first snorkeling experience.

Beginners also need to get good equipment that will prevent a disastrous snorkeling experience.

Many snorkelers without the right preparation for snorkeling often experience terrible things from fear to injury, boredom, exhaustion, leaking face mask, and many more.

To avoid all these from happening, this guide offers you 5 snorkeling mistakes to avoid as a beginner.

Renting The Cheapest Equipment

Learn how to fix a mask and prevent fogging

Beginners going on snorkeling need to understand that masks come in different sizes and shapes. They can be adjusted to fit your face. When renting a mask, you should be on the lookout for a fitting one that does not leak.

Also, you need to be aware of a fogging mask that prevents you from having a clear view.

Get a dry snorkel

Try to rent a dry snorkel or at the very least, a snorkel with a splash guard. You definitely don’t want to have a flood of water come down your snorkel. A dry snorkel has a special valve on the top that seals shut when your snorkel goes underwater (like with a wave, or when you tilt your head to the side). It will also have a special purge valve at the bottom of the snorkel so that it is easy to blow water out of the tube. For a first time snorkeler, this piece of equipment is very essential.

Get fins that fit

You should try to rent fins that are too tight, too lose and don’t hurt. You don’t want your fin falling off when you most need it. And getting sores on your feet from fins that have hard spots or are too tight will ruin your time. Also have it in mind that your feet will be wet. Also, it will often shrink a little in the cooler water. This is why a snug fit is important. Don’t even think about not having fins. They are essential for safety. They give you a great amount of swimming force and will save you lots of energy.

Not Practising Ahead Of Time

It is very important to rent the equipment before you go to the beach so that you can have time to adjust to it and get used to it. Also, you need to practise putting on your mask.

For your practice, pick a spot like a swimming pool or a calm shallow sandy beach to get a feel for breathing through your snorkel. It takes a while to train your body into becoming comfortable breathing through a snorkel with your face in the water.

Not Swimming Slowly

As a first-time snorkelers, you need to swim slowly and try to stay relaxed and calm so that you don’t get exhausted from swimming.

Not Carefully Choosing Your First Location

As a beginner, you should carefully choose your first location. It is better to go from a beach the first time instead of jumping off a boat into deep water.

Not Choosing A Calm Spot

You should only go out when it is calm. It is potentially dangerous for you to go out into the ocean when there are waves. Also, your snorkeling experience will be a lot more difficult and less enjoyable.

Earth Day 2021: Celebrations Around The World

April 22nd 2021 at 06:30

The theme of the annual Earth Day celebrations in 2021 is ‘Restore Our Earth’.

Celebrated on April 22 every year, Earth Day became a global event set aside to pledge support for environmental protection.

The 2021 Earth Day celebrations is the 51st year since the Earth Day was birthed.

However, in 2009, the United Nations designated April 22 as ‘International Mother Earth Day’.

History of Earth Day

Earth Day was first celebrated on March 21, 1970. It was the first day of spring that year. It was proposed by John McConnell, a newspaper publisher who proposed the idea at a UNESCO Conference on the Environment the year before. He suggested that the holiday be celebrated every year as a reminder of everyone’s responsibility to help protect the environment.

In 1971, the then United Nations Secretary-General signed a proclamation written by McConnell that the United Nations would celebrate this holiday each year on the first day of spring.

Another environmental activist and United States Senator, Gaylord Nelson organized an event on April 22, 1970, to show other politicians the wide support for environmental issues. The event turned out successful and led to Earth Day celebrations across thousands of colleges, universities, schools, and communities, making it the second Earth Day celebration.

Earth Day Celebrations Around the World

Earth Day is celebrated around the world in different ways. The common theme, however, is creating awareness and educating people about preserving our resources. Here are some of the Earth Day celebrations:

United States

In the United States, Earth Day celebrations have included rallies and teachings. In Washington, D.C, scientists and civic organizers provide training sessions and others encourage marches. New York has had pop-up shops that feature companies that support sustainability. Many other cities establish separate, local events.

Denmark

Denmark celebrates Earth Day United at the Christiansborg Castle Square in Copenhagen, which includes a celebration of drum-playing pointed at the four corners of the world. The group then participates in the March for Science, which is a march that seeks to hold the elected officials accountable for greener initiatives.

Japan

Tokyo celebrates an annual two-day celebration of Earth Day in Yoyogi Park where approximately 100,000 visitors are expected to participate in family activities and learn about companies that encourage sustainability.

Great Britain

London features an Earth Day celebration, sponsored by a group of activists and musicians. The event raises funds for British charities and groups fighting climate change.

Spain

Granada, Spain holds a 24-hour Global Unity and Regeneration Gathering, which includes presentations and workshops on helping the environment.

India

India has a variety of Earth Day activities. Participants are encouraged to dress in green. Also, the country puts on events that focus exclusively on protecting the Asian elephant, an endangered species.

Switzerland

The International School of Geneva hosts a green sale in which they raise funds to plant trees on school grounds throughout the area. At this event, they play recycling games and supply environmentally-friendly arts and crafts.

Canada

Several cities throughout Canada, including Toronto, Vancouver, Ottawa and Amherst participate in educational talks, activities and parades.

Australia

Sydney hosts four different nature walks with experts, bike giveaways and storytelling.

Philippines

The Philippines features marathons as part of Earth Day Celebrations, which include 5K, 10K, 21K and 42K options.

South Africa

South Africa hosts Earth Expo, which presents educational forums on sustainable nutrition, technology, entrepreneurship, and fashion.

Moldova

Gutta-Club in Chisinӑu hosts Earth Day activities in 30 villages, including tree planting, clean-ups and building nesting boxes for birds

Importance of Celebrating Earth Day

Celebrating Earth Day helps us in understanding major environmental issues. It also helps to ensure that you are part of this global mission. As a result, celebrations focus on thinking globally and acting locally, such as planting trees, cleaning up water sources or helping in a community garden.

For a successful Earth Day celebration, it is important to spread awareness. Translating flyers and educational materials can help further expand the reach of your event. To find out how you can be part of this important celebration, search for Earth Day celebrations near you.

How To Use Your iPhone Camera To Take Amazing Photos During Travel

April 21st 2021 at 04:54

How To Use Your iPhone Camera To Take Amazing Photos During Travel

Most travel junkies will tell you for free that photos are the life of the journey and vacation.

So maybe you don’t even fall into that category. You are simply planning to go on a solo trip to explore a new place and capture great memories on your camera. That’s cool.

And if you have been on different trips alone only to be traveling with your partner or family this time around, then that’s great too.

Photos will still come in. And when they do, how do you handle the task?

The traditional DSLR Camera is, no doubt, famed for higher image resolution. Often a tourist’s first choice, the DSLR Camera is, however, not the only reliable way to take amazing snapshots during your travel experience.

The progressive innovations in iPhone camera technology have opened a new and less complex way of taking great travel photos.

All you’ll need is follow some useful tips and your iPhone camera is ready to be your best travel buddy.

Here are 7 tips on how to use your iPhone camera to take amazing travel shots that you will be proud of.

Do A Little Background Research

You’ll need to find out what you would love to capture. Stunning architecture? The locals? Food? Natural scenery? Your interest determines what you will do next.

For shots of nature, you will need to find out the right moment for your shot. During sunrise? Sunset? Will there be a foggy weather during your shoot? Take all these things into consideration to get the best of photos on your iPhone.

You should also be careful not to take shots of prohibited areas. In some places, some buildings are not to be snapped. You may risk being fined or even a jail-term.

Prepare Your Camera

Even an iPhone camera needs to be prepared for the task ahead. It’s possible that dust, dirt or grease may have contaminated the lens, which will produce blurry and foggy looking images. So, you need to have a clean piece of fabric handy to clean the lens just before taking your shots.

You don’t also want to run short of battery and ruin your travel experience. A portable battery charger is a must-have if you will be relying on your iPhone to take photos.

Try To Take Unique Shots

Visiting the Pyramids of Giza? There’s already a thousand and one shots that probably look the same. Try to make your shots different. This applies to other locations. Try different angles and lightings. Make your photos unique.

Depict The Local Culture

There’s no way your travel photo shoot is complete without shots of the local culture. A great shot of a busy road or marketplace will do just great. And if you get to interact well with some of the locals, you can seek their permission to take beautiful photos of them. People will likely find it more comfortable to be snapped on a phone than on a conspicuous DSLR.

Use Humans In Natural Scenery

To capture great shots of natural scenery, include a human being as the subject to add some depth. The photos will turn out looking better than if you took random shots of the desserts or white sandy beaches.

Give Small Details More Attention

Be on the lookout to capture little things that make all the difference. This gives your travel album a well-rounded outlook. There are spectacularly awesome aspects of nature and places that need a more closer look – it could be a close-up shot of a unique animal or an overlooked area in a building – these will turn out great on your iPhone camera.

Tell A Story With Your Photos

Using the “burst” function on the iPhone, you can tell an amazing story about your travel as it allows you to capture micro stories on the spot. Interesting shots of scenes such as a crowd at a car park or a close hug between two people who are reuniting can be captured remarkably well.

7 Hiking Mistakes You Should Avoid

April 15th 2021 at 14:18

7 Hiking Mistakes You Should Avoid

Hiking is fast becoming a popular sport. Many people are realizing the need to have some time out in nature.

And it’s totally understandable. You do want a break from the everyday life.

But it can get easier only when you are aware of the mistakes to avoid, especially if you are a first-timer.

To help you onto a great start, here are seven common hiking mistakes you should absolutely avoid.

A map you don’t understand

It’s common knowledge that you need a map along on your hike. But not just any kind of map will do. As a newbie, you may think a road map will be of use on your trip, but that’s not the case. It even gets worse if you want to rely on the map app on your smartphone. Maps are not created the same. Topo maps are the ideal in hiking. You can’t go wrong with them as they are tailored to lead you on a specific area, with clear illustrations of your trail system.

Wearing Cotton

This might seem surprising to a newbie but it is not to an experienced hiker. No one is being dramatic but wearing cotton for your hiking trail can lead to hypothermia. Hypothermia is when your body temperature drops abnormally low, leading to disorientation, shivering, and occasionally death. Now this is not the aim, right? Nowadays, outdoor manufacturers offer “wicking” fabrics which transfers your body sweat as you hike away from your skin to the outside of the clothing layer.

Brand new boots

Your hiking boots are very important. This is why you should go for unproblematic ones that are not brand new or have never been used. Use your hiking boots well before going on a trail. Let your feet get used to the boots – wear them everywhere first.

Starting late

It is not advisable to start a trail in the afternoon. This is especially if you are hiking above the tree line. If you want to take on mountainous areas, do so in the morning and be off the trail by noon.

Littering

This is a mistake that you should totally avoid. Don’t litter the trail while hiking. This includes food wrappers, toilet paper, and food scraps.

Underpacking

While it’s understandable to want to go on a trail with a lighter backpack, it might be a costly mistake if you are not experienced in the essential items in contrast to the ones you can leave behind. While starting out, you should carry everything you will possibly need. This is until you have enough knowledge to determine the essentials from the nice-to-haves.

Speeding downhill

The downhill trail is the most-anticipated as hikers try to get through the climbs. But hiking downhill is where you should pay most attention to as this is where you can easily make a mistake. Be careful and don’t speed downhill. As American alpinist Ed Viesturs puts it: “Getting to the summit is optional; getting down is mandatory”, you don’t want to get injured because you are very excited about hiking downhill.

How To Become A Social Media Influencer In Nigeria

April 9th 2021 at 11:09

How To Become A Social Media Influencer In Nigeria

The term ‘social media influencer’ is being used nowadays more often not. And this is proof of the growing presence of the profession in the economic world.

Undoubtedly, the innovation known today as social media is a bedrock of diverse job opportunities.

Tapping into this available goldmine is, therefore, right and timely.

If you have been searching for a simple guide on how to become a social media influencer in Nigeria – and earn an income while at it – then, this is where you can begin your journey.

By the time you are done reading this, you would have gained a lot of insight into the terrains of social media influencing.

Types of Influencers

Arming yourself with the knowledge of the different types of social media influencers is necessary to make the most suitable decision for yourself as you start your journey.

Hence, there are four main types of social media influencers.

  • Celebrities

These are artistes, actors, reality TV stars, sportsmen and sportswomen who have attained the peak of popularity and superstardom. Examples include Wizkid, Burna Boy.

  • Industry experts/Thought Leaders

These are those who dominate a specific field or industry owing to their wide knowledge and experience. An example is Dimma Umeh.

  • Micro-influencers

These are the ones who have captured the attention of social media users in a unique way and maintain their visibility by promoting their unique content. An example is Bobrisky.

  • Bloggers/Content Creators

Their brand has been built around providing information and content people are most likely to be interested in. An example is Linda Ikeji.

Having learnt the main categories of social media influencers, it’s time to fully go into how to become a social media influencer in Nigeria.

Find your niche

Excelling as a social media influencer requires you to find a niche that you are comfortable in. Trying to dabble into almost all niches at once will only succeed in holding you back from becoming a professional social media influencer that can be taken seriously by brands and social media users. Remember that the goal is to do what works for you and be consistent at it.

Pick a social media platform

This is equally vital. It is unrealistic to dominate all social media channels at the same time. Your target audience might be on Twitter, which would mean that your time on Instagram is unnecessary. There are very good social media influencers who understand that it is wise to stay on a platform and utilize it to your maximum benefit. If you really want to give them a run for their money, then stay on a particular platform and build your base to the strongest of your abilities – watch yourself succeed as you do this.

Work on your content strategy

This is perhaps the most important tip you need to become a social media influencer. Your content has to be unique and also conform to the expectations of your target audience. Good content ideas can come from doing your research on Google and other platforms like Quora and Nairaland. Simply make sure you sound unique as you deliver high quality content that develops your brand as an influencer.

Use hashtags

Hashtags are the spice needed to take your social media influencing to the next level. Hashtag generators such as Kicksta, Ingramer, All-Hashtag can also aid you. Hashtags get you discovered on your preferred social media platform. Don’t underestimate the power of using a popular hashtag to boost your outreach.

Collaborate with other influencers

This is needed to boost your brand. While working on becoming a bonafide social media influencer, you need to engage established influencers with a huge following on your preferred social media platform. Doing so involves sharing and commenting on their posts and reaching out to them via email instead of the regular direct messages on social media.

Always Reply Comments

Don’t make the mistake of not replying comments on your posts. Remember that you are engaging with human beings and people like to feel important. Hence, as you work on gaining their attention, don’t leave them to their assumptions when the comments start rolling in. Reply the comments; engage with them. This is a good way to attain and also retain your status.

When you hit about 5,000 or 10,000 followers, then you can congratulate yourself on the journey that you have started. Always remember to be consistent.

At Least 45 Died At Magufuli’s Burial, Says Tanzanian Police

April 8th 2021 at 16:20

The Tanzanian police have said that at least 45 people died in a stampede that took place on March 21 when citizens paid their last respects to the country’s late President John Pombe Magufuli.

According to the statement made by Dar es Salaam regional police commander, Lazaro Mambosasa on Tuesday, there had been a lot of people who wanted to get in the stadium and some were not patient.

“They tried to force their way in and that resulted in a stampede. Forty-five died in the accident,” Dar es Salaam regional police commander, Lazaro Mambosasa told AFP.

Five of the deceased were from the same family.

A woman and four children were earlier reported crushed in the accident at Uhuru Stadium, though the true toll of the stampede was not announced at the time.

The stampede that took place on March 21 also injured 37 people. According to Mambosasa, the 37 mourners who were injured in the March 21 stampede have all been discharged from hospital after treatment.

Tens of thousands of mourners gathered  in the streets of Dar es Salaam this month to bid farewell to Magufuli, whose sudden death from a short mysterious illness was announced by the government.

The stampede happened on the second day of tributes at Uhuru Stadium.

Tanzania’s late President Magufuli, who died on March 17 at the age of 61, was laid to rest in his hometown Chato on March 26.

18 Dead As Building Collapses In Cairo, Egypt

April 8th 2021 at 16:20

A nine-storey apartment building has collapsed in Egypt’s capital, Cairo on Saturday morning, killing at least 18 people and injuring about two dozen others, an official said.

Rescue workers were searching for any survivors trapped under the rubble of the building in the el-Salam neighbourhood, said Khalid Abdel-Al, the administrative head of the Cairo governorate.

At least 24 others were injured and taken to hospitals, he said in a statement.

Police sealed off the area, keeping back the curious and people apparently looking for relatives in the building. Workers were seen using bulldozers to clear away debris.

It was not immediately clear what caused the building’s collapse.

An engineering committee was formed to examine the structural integrity of neighbouring buildings, Abdel-Al said.

Building collapses are fast becoming a common occurrence in Egypt, where low-grade construction is prevalent in shantytowns, poor city neighbourhoods and rural areas.

Kenyatta Tightens Restrictions As Virus Cases Rise

April 8th 2021 at 16:20

The rise in Kenya’s COVID-19 cases and deaths has led President Uhuru Kenyatta to announce tightened restrictions in five of the most affected counties.

These new restrictions have been imposed in the country’s capital, Nairobi and the three urban counties surrounding it, including Nakuru, a major transit city.

“Our rate of infection has gone up 10 times between January and March of 2021,” Kenyatta said in a nationally televised address.

The country, with a population of 53 million people, has a cumulative total of 126,170 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including more than 2,000 deaths.

Kenya’s 7-day rolling average of daily new cases has more than doubled over the past two weeks from 1.02 new cases per 100,000 people on March 11 to 2.29 new cases per 100,000 people on March 25, according to Johns Hopkins University.

The country’s rate of deaths has quadrupled, with the 7-day rolling average of daily deaths surging from 0.01 deaths per 100,000 people on March 11 to 0.04 deaths per 100,000 people on March 25.

Kenyatta has also urged those eligible for the first round of vaccinations to go and get vaccinated as soon as possible.

On March 3, Kenya received 1.02 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, manufactured by the Serum Institute of India.

It was the first batch from the global COVAX initiative that was created to ensure that low- and middle-income countries have fair access to vaccines.

The government said the vaccines will be administered to some 400,000 medical workers and the rest will go to other frontline workers such as teachers and police officers.

However, medical workers and other Kenyans have not been getting the vaccinations in large numbers, according to health experts.

In recent weeks, many Kenyans have shown signs of relaxing the safety measures by not wearing masks in their neighborhoods. Also, some bars and nightclubs have been operating past the curfew hours.

But the deaths of three media personalities have highlighted the dangers of the disease.

In the five affected counties, Kenyatta has ordered a curfew to start two hours earlier from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m.

“All movement into out of the counties must stop immediately until further notice,” he said.

Kenyatta has also banned all public gatherings and in-person meetings of whatever nature in the counties.

Barack Obama Mourns Kenyan Grandmother

April 8th 2021 at 16:20

Former President of the United States, Barack Obama has mourned the passing of his grandmother, Sarah in Kenya via his official Twitter account.

Sarah, aged 99, was the second wife of President Obama’s grandfather, Hussein Onyango Obama, a herbalist and a village elder who fought for the British in Burma, now called Myanmar.

She helped raise the former president’s father.

“Although not his birth mother, Granny would raise my father as her own, and it was in part thanks to her love and encouragement that he was able to defy the odds and do well enough in school to get a scholarship to attend an American university. When our family had difficulties, her homestead was a refuge for her children and grandchildren, and her presence was a constant, stabilizing force,” Obama wrote.

President Obama was often affectionate towards her and referred to her as “Granny” in his memoir, “Dreams from My Father.” He described meeting her during his 1988 trip to his father’s homeland, adding that things were initially awkward between them until they slowly got along and managed to develop a warm bond.

For decades, Sarah Obama has helped orphans, raising some in her home. The Mama Sara Obama Foundation helped provide food and education to children who lost their parents — providing school supplies, uniforms, basic medical needs, and school fees.

In a 2014 interview, she said that even as an adult, letters would arrive but she couldn’t read them. She said she didn’t want her children to be illiterate, so she saw that all her family’s children went to school.

She recalled pedaling the president’s father six miles (nine kilometers) to school on the back of her bicycle every day from the family’s home village of Kogelo to the bigger town of Ngiya to make sure he got the education that she never had.

“I love education,” Sarah Obama said, because children “learn they can be self-sufficient,” especially girls who too often had no opportunity to go to school.

“If a woman gets an education she will not only educate her family but educate the entire village,” she said.

In recognition of her work to support education, she was honored by the United Nations in 2014, receiving the inaugural Women’s Entrepreneurship Day Education Pioneer Award.

I Failed As A Coach – Ntseki

March 29th 2021 at 06:21

Molefi Ntseki has come out to blame himself for Bafana Bafana’s failure of qualifying for the continental showpiece in Cameroon next year.

“The disappointment is not only for us, but the big disappointment is for SAFA because the objective was very clear, the mandate is very clear – to see the team qualifying for every continental and world tournament so that we can put Bafana on the map again with improved CAF and FIFA rankings,”

Ntseki told the media following the national team’s shock 2-0 defeat away to Sudan when a point was all they needed to secure their place in AFCON 2022.

Read: Bafana Bafana fail to qualify for Afcon after shooting blanks against Sudan

“Not qualifying has dented our image and our possibilities of improving. As passionate South Africans, the expectation obviously was for Bafana to qualify for Afcon and maybe to do better than the last time (reaching the quarterfinals in 2019). The disappointment also goes to every South African, and I think as players and coaches we’re very much aware of the emotional pain we have caused all South Africans. The pain is more from us because we were almost there in Cameroon because of the points we accumulated along the road.”

Ntseki’s appointment as the head coach came in August 2019 shortly after Stuart Baxter, who’d roped him in as his assistant, quited despite a credible quarter final finish in the previous tournament that year in Egypt.

The mandate given to him and the objectives was made clear – take Bafana to the Afcon and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, though it’s now unlikely that he will stick around to take the team through the qualifiers for the global showpiece in the coming months.

“We need to be very honest with ourselves in terms of the challenges we came up against ahead of the Ghana/Sudan matches. We could not get our regular players because of Covid and the players we brought in who did very well against Ghana were excused because of injuries. We had to start afresh with new playing personnel. It is just unfortunate that we are talking about a team that was almost about to qualify,” Ntseki said.

“As a head coach of Bafana I came up with a turnaround strategy and everything started very well and we just needed a point to qualify. Yes, as a coach, the head of the selection committee, my disappointment is huge for my personal growth and achievements. The success of the team is my success and the failure of the team firstly starts with me to say I have failed as a coach. In football we need to own up. When there’s success you become everybody’s favourite, but when there’s failure you become an orphan and everyone is looking at you. Things like this do happen in football and we own up and we need to be very strong. I wanted the team playing in the Afcon, but it’s a big disappointment from my side.”

Super Eagles: Iwobi Tests Positive for Covid-19, Out of Eagles Squad

March 29th 2021 at 04:59

Super Eagles attacking midfielder and Everton Winger Alex Iwobi has tested positive to COVID-19.

Iwobi is likely to miss the remainder of Nigeria’s AFCON 20201 qualifier, which comes up on Wednesday against Lesotho.

The pacey winger was expected to start against Benin Republic on Saturday but could not join the line up due to the Covid-19 positive test result.

The question many are asking is whether the 24 years old midfielder contracted the virus while in England or upon arrival to Nigeria.

However, the former Arsenal youngster has been withdrawn from the team and further tests are carried out to ascertain and confirm the initial result.

Before the Super Eagles game, every player was subjected to Covid-19 test and upon arrival at Porto Novo on Friday, they were tested as well.

Iwobi was not the only player tested to Covid-19, two of the Squirrels of Benin, Rodrigue Kossi and Jacques Bessan were also left out of the starting IX against Nigeria due to the virus.

Nigeria are through to the tournament scheduled to be held in January next year. But the Squirrel of Benin will be hoping to join other teams who have qualified for the continental showpiece when they face Sierra Leone.

A win or draw will see the Benin Republic players featuring in Cameroon next year.

Bafana Bafana fail to qualify for Afcon after shooting blanks against Sudan

March 28th 2021 at 16:53

The hopes of Bafana Bafana qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Cameroon next years finals disappeared into the humid night air at the Al-Hilal Stadium, Omdurman, as Sudan claimed a 2-0 win over the South African side in the final Group C clash on Sunday evening.

Sudan and Ghana are now through to the tournament continental showpiece in Cameroon.

Sudan’s two first-half goals in the shoot-out for Cameroon qualification sealed Bafana Bafana’s fate.

ReadBafana Bafana’s Hope Of Qualifying For AFCON 2022 Lies On One Key Fixture

Sudan started bright and looked sharp in the first opening minutes, set off at a great pace, and they took the South Africans by surprise.

Sudan’s early free-kick after the Bafana Bafana were blown up for a foul some 20 metres from their penalty area, resulting in a set-piece, which they failed to clear, gave the host a deserving lead. Midfielder Malik Bakhit”s header flew past goalkeeper Ronwen Williams for the opening goal of the match, in the fourth minute.

The Bafana Bafana responded well, created at least two chances in about six minutes – the best opportunity came through striker Percy Tau, but he was thwarted by a desperate tackle as he tried to pull the trigger from just outside the penalty area.

Sudan’s defence did everything to cope with the pressure. They conceded three corners but the South Africa team failed to capitalise on them. They had enjoyed the lion share of the possession (62%).

Despite the possession, it was the Bafana Bafana team who gave away possession out wide on the left flank, allowing Sudan to go further ahead in the 31st minute as an innocuous kick upfield across to the opposite side of the field caught South Africa’s defence napping, and the unmarked Abdelrahman Yousif latched on to the ball. He darted in from 20 metres out and scored with two defenders trying to dispossess him (2-0).

Again, just like they reacted after the first goal, The Bafana Bafana side responded with a pressure spell, and several scoring chances and two close-in free-kicks emerged. Somehow, Sudan’s defence remained intact as several scoring efforts were marginally wide of the uprights.

South Africa had managed 11 shots at goal, with three on target before the referee Martins de Carvalho of Angola blew for halftime. Bafana Bafana also had a total of six corners to work with, but their set-piece ability was well below par in the first half.

When the second-half play started, Sudan showed a greater sense of urgency as the opening 10 minutes were spent in the Sudan half. The marksmen were hesitant in the striking zone and on occasions, final passes went astray.

The match ended 2-0 despite the Bafana Bafana having the lion share of the possession.

The loss means that South Africa will not be featuring in Cameroon come January 2022.

Onuachu late goal delays qualification for Benin as Nigeria book their Place in Cameroon

March 28th 2021 at 00:20

Paul Onuacho came from the bench as a substitute to secure a win for the Super Eagles of Nigeria as well as ensuring that the team maintain their unbeaten run in the qualification stage of the tournament, which is scheduled to hold on January 2022 in Cameroon.

He came from the bench to score in the 93rd minute as the Super Eagles defeated Benin republic 1-0 at the Stade Charles de Gaulle in Porto Novo on Saturday to delay the Squirrels’ qualification to next year’s Total Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Nigeria had already qualified for Cameroon AFCON 2022 even before they stepped on the pitch in Porto Novo after Sierra Leone and Lesotho had played to a barren draw.

A draw would have been enough for the Benin republic team to join the likes of Nigeria, Comoros, and other nations who have qualified for the tournament, but Paul Onuacho’s last-minute goal means they’ll have to wait for their last match away to Sierra Leone, who also looks forward to qualifying for the tournament.

Benin, who need just a point to go through, will hope they find and convert their best chances against Sierra Leone who are currently in the third position with four points and could qualify if they beat Benin.

It was a game of two halves In Porto Novo as Nigeria dominated the opening half while Benin’s Squirrels had more chances in the second period, but were unable to convert their efforts to goals.

Prior to the kick-off, The Super Eagles were briefed with the pre-match news that they were already qualified for Cameroon.

Nevertheless, as early as the fifth minute, the Nigerians were already causing their hosts jitters when Victor Osimhen struck a shot wide across the face of goal when he was sent through by Henry Onyekuru. And two minutes later, Benin keeper Saturnin Allagbe made a brilliant one handed save to tip over a snapshot from Kelechi Iheanacho.

The Super Eagles continued to dominate the match and Osimhen once again had another chance in the 24th minute. However, the lanky Napoli striker took a hurried shot that was easily saved when a good interchange of passes released him into the box.

Gernot Rohr’s men almost opened up the goal scoring with some neat team play in the 33rd minute when Ola Aina switched flanks to float the ball to Onyekuru on the left, the winger teeing up Iheanacho but his shot deflected for a corner.

Just before the half time, Benin keeper Allagbe made a super block at point blank to deny Onyekuru who snapped in a quick header from a decent Zaidu Sanusi cross from the left.

The home team did start strong into the second 45 minutes and were the better side. They had a chance presented to them in the 51st minute through a slip-off play between William Troost-Ekong and keeper Maduka Okoye saw Mounie sneak in between the two, but his attempted lob over the keeper was wide.

Okoyo was forced to make a good save in the 63rd minute when he went down to his left flank to pluck out a header from Mounie who had risen to connect to a Youssouf Amouda cross.

The last 25 minutes of the game were a seesaw affair between the two sides. And It was

Gernot Rohr’s men who would come alive in the final minutes and their late pressure bore fruit when Onuachu headed home after keeper Allagbe had saved Osimhen’s effort with his feet.

COVID-19: Kenya Imposes New Lockdown

March 26th 2021 at 15:42

The rise in new COVID-19 cases has led the Kenyan government to impose a new lockdown measure.

This has also made President Uhuru Kenyatta announce a ban on all inland travel in the capital Nairobi and out four other counties. He made this known on Friday in the wake of the country’s positivity rate rising from 2% to 22% between January and March, with Nairobi accounting for nearly 60% of the cases.

Kenyatta further noted that hospital admissions had increased by 52% in the past two weeks, adding that at least seven people are dying every day from coronavirus.

These new measures, therefore, mean that no road, rail or air transport will be permitted in Nairobi, Kajiado, Kiambu, Machakos and Nakuru.

Furthermore, physical meetings are now banned.

As regards curfew, hours now start at 20:00 until 04:00 am (instead of 22:00 until 04:00 am`) in the five counties. Special passes that allowed people to travel during curfew hours have also been cancelled.

Alcohol sales in the areas have also been banned and restaurants can now only provide takeaway services.

The president also ordered “an immediate suspension of all face-to-face teaching, which includes universities”, with the exception of students currently taking exams.

Kenya reopened its schools and colleges in early January, which had been closed for ten months.

All sporting events have also been suspended.

Although international travel is permitted, a negative coronavirus test has become an essential requirement.

Implementation of the new measures begins on Friday at midnight.

This week, Kenya recorded between 1,000 and 1,500 cases per day.

“According to our health experts, our third wave started to gain strength in early March,” said Kenyatta.

The peak of this wave is expected in the next 30 days, with more than 2,500 to 3,000 cases per day,” he added.

Aware of the impact these decisions will have on the economy, Kenyatta added that these “measures are temporary and necessary to contain the spread of the disease and therefore to stop further loss of life.”

“I am convinced that the cost of inaction would be much worse,” he said.

Covid-19: President Kenyatta suspends all sporting activities in Kenya indefinitely

March 26th 2021 at 14:15

Kenya President Uhuru Kenyatta has suspended all sporting activities across the nation indefinitely due to a surge in new coronavirus cases.

The country is experiencing what seems like a third wave as the samples collected are returning positive results. And the head of state has announced the measures – according to him – are aimed at containing the virus, which includes suspension of sporting activities in the country.

This is the second time sporting activities have been halted after a similar order was issued in March 2020, when the first cases of the pandemic were recorded in Kenya.

Sporting activities were first suspended during the first Coronavirus pandemic in March after cases were recorded. And this will be the second time a similar order will be given to halt all sporting activities.

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League, Kenyan Women Premier League, the National Super League, which are at different stages means they will have to stop.

“To avert a national health crisis and upon the advice of the national security council, the council of governors, and also in keeping with the recommendations of the national emergency response committee on Covid-19, I hereby issue the public order No. 2 of 2021 on the coronavirus pandemic,” President Kenyatta’s statement read.

“All public gatherings and in-person meetings of whatever nature are suspended within the counties of Nairobi, Kajiado, Machakos, Kiambu, and Nakuru until further notice.

“All sporting activities are hereby suspended, similarly operations of sporting and recreational facilities including members clubs are suspended until it is otherwise directed.

“That in line with the directive on public gatherings including social gatherings, the following measures are to come into effect commencing Midnight on Friday, 26th March 2021.”

However, the Harambee Stars departure plan to face Togo for their final Group G Afcon qualifier is not affected as the suspension does not affect both domestic and international travels.

The statement further read…”That all persons coming into the country must be in possession of a negative Covid-19 PCR certificate, acquired no more than 96 hours prior to arrival into the country; with the PCR Certificate also having been validated under the trusted travel platform for those travelling by air,”

The Football Kenya Federation president Nick Mwendwa also confirmed that the national side will travel to face their opponent in Lome on Saturday for the March 29 qualifier.

Mwendwa told goal.com after the decision by Kenyatta…

“The plane is awaiting the team at the airport for our journey tomorrow [Saturday],”

“All the other leagues will remain suspended and I cannot say when they will tentatively resume for sure.”

The nation’s Premier league is ongoing with 16 games played. Tusker is the one leading with 36 points as Zoo FC, Mathare United, and Vihiga United are battling in the relegation zone.

Cosafa Side Comoros Qualify for First Ever Africa Cup of Nations

March 26th 2021 at 06:13

The Comoros are a group of islands at the northern end of the Mozambique Channel of the Indian Ocean, between Madagascar and the southeast African mainland, about 180 miles (290 km) off the eastern coast of Africa.

Comoros, a group of small islands located at the northern end of Mozambique has secured their place in Cameroon next year.

The Cosafa Side Comoros qualified for the African Cup of Nations for the first time after a goalless 90 minutes with Togolese national team on Thursday. The draw means the Cosafa Side were unbeaten so far in the qualifiers.

The draw against Togo advanced Comoros to nine points from five matches, and secured a place in AFCON 2022.

Qualifying for the continent tournament comes as a great achievement for the small island nation.

Comoros now moved above Egypt, who have eight points, and Kenya who have three points ahead. And these two sides will be meeting later on Thursday in Nairobi.

Although Kenya can still attain nine points with two games left to complete the group matches, Comoros have a better head-to-head record in the two matches between the two countries.

Togo had already been knocked out of the competition and travelled to Comoros, leaving almost all of their foreign-based regulars behind.

Comoros has a population of about 900,000, started playing in competitive football matches in 2006 and has since been improving, becoming more stronger in recent years as they draw more players into their team from the Comorian community in France.

Comoros is about 290 km off the eastern coast of Africa. And are the eighth country to book their place at the finals in Cameroon next January, joining the hosts, holders Algeria, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali, Senegal and Tunisia.

President Ramaphosa To Face Anti-Corruption Commission

March 25th 2021 at 12:00

South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa will testify before a judicial commission investigating allegations of looting and corruption in April.

The allegations are related to his predecessor, Jacob Zuma’s administration, according to the statement issued by the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Allegations of State Capture (Zondo Commission) on Wednesday.

Ramaphosa is summoned for four days, April 22, 23 and 28, 29, said the chairman of the commission, Judge Raymond Zondo, during a hearing broadcast on television.

Ramaphosa will testify in his capacity as leader of the ruling African National Congress (ANC), as well as president and former vice-president of the country (2014-2018).

The commission is probing allegations of looting and corruption which resulted in billions being stolen during Zuma’s time in office.

A number of senior officials including Zuma, his former cabinet members and CEOs of state-owned entities have been implicated.

The commission is also taking legal actions against Zuma after he refused to appear before the commission and respond to the allegations. The case is being heard on Thursday.

Ramaphosa’s pledge to battle corruption helped to position him in power in Africa’s most developed economy, which was in recession even before the disastrous effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

However, he has found it difficult to take effective action against widespread graft, which also affected the country’s attempts to fight COVID-19.

A report this month by the state’s Special Investigative Unit discovered that more than $800 million might have been lost to improper or corrupt government contracts for protective equipment for health workers and others as South Africa struggled with rising cases in the first few months of the pandemic.

Last month, the commission demanded two years in prison against Zuma for refusing to testify before the Constitutional Court, the highest court in the country. His case will also be heard on Thursday.

The former president was forced to resign in 2018 after pressure from his own ANC party.

South Africa vs Ghana Preview: Kick-off time, TV channel, squad news

March 25th 2021 at 09:25
Bafana Bafana will play their third straight Afcon qualifying match today against the Black Stars. And they’ll be hoping to edge closer at FNB Stadium later this evening.

After the match between Sudan and Sao Tome and Principe on Wednesday ended 2-0 in favour of Sudan, Bafana Bafana now need a win against Ghana to keep the hope alive and would have to wait on the final matchday to confirm a place at the tournament that’s even if they record victory over Ghana this evening.

Molefi Ntseki’s men are second with nine point, the Black Stars are first and Sudan whom they visit on Sunday to wind up their qualification campaign are in the third position.

Group C matches will be the one to watch out as the top-three teams are all within a chance of claiming a berth for Cameroon 2022.

However, if South Africa lose to Ghana, they will travel to Sudan under pressure for an outright win on Sunday.

Bafana Bafana is also part of the teams with injury lists and Covid-19 restrictions from clubs preventing their players from traveling.

Kemit Erasmus, a SuperSport United forward was injured while in action for the clubs and couldn’t make  it to the camp.

Thulani Sererowere and Dean Furman were restricted by their clubs to travel to South Africa which is considered as a new Covid-19 variant hotspot.

Rangers FC midfielder Bongani Zungu is doubtful of the game against Ghana but will be expected to be available for the trip to Sudan.

New arrivals to the team are the Mamelodi Sundowns duo of Mothobi Mvala and Lebohang Maboe as well as Orlando Pirates midfielder Vincent Pule, Thabo Nodada and Thabiso Kutumela.

South Africa is not the only country short of players due to Covid-19 restrictions, Ghana is also  in the same situation as Bafana Bafana where some European clubs are reluctant to allow their players to travel to South Africa.

Captain Andre Ayew, Crystal Palace striker Jordan Ayew and Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey are all missing out but the trio could be available for their final group game against Sao Tome at home.M

Chelsea loanee Abdul Rahman Baba and Ajax Amsterdam attacker Mohammed Kudus have managed to make it to South Africa after initially facing travelling challenges with their clubs.

Match Preview

South Africa Bafana Bafana and the Black Star of Ghana will be playing against each other for the 14th time since their first-ever meeting in November 1994 when Bafana won 2-1 in a Four Nations Tournament at Loftus Versfeld.

In the 13 games they have clashed in, four games have ended in a draw while Bafana enjoy a better record of five wins to Ghana’s four.

But the last time the two sides met, it was the Black Stars that won 2-0 in what was the opening match of this 2022 Afcon qualifying campaign.

Partey and Kudus were the ones who scored in that encounter with Bafana Bafana.  And Ntseki’s men would be happy that the Arsenal man will not be available on Thursday.

Afcon 2022 Qualifiers: Egypt and Liverpool star Salah handed an exclusively tight security in Kenya

March 24th 2021 at 18:16

Egyptian star, Mohamed Salah was spotted with four heavily built men wearing black suits as the Pharaohs arrived on Tuesday night ahead of their encounter with Kenya.

The Liverpool striker and leading goal scorer in EPL 2020/2021 has been accorded a tight security while in Kenya ahead of their AFCON qualifying match against Harambee Stars at the Kasarani Stadium on Thursday.

Read: Bafana’s bid to qualify for next year’s AFCON becomes difficult after Sudan beat São Tomé and Príncipe

The Pharaohs arrived the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Tuesday night and were immediately whisked away into a waiting team bus, which drove them to Villa Rosa Kempinski, a few metres from the city centre in Nairobi.

Fans who were waiting to receive the players were left puzzled at the airport when extra security [four strong men in black] swung into action immediately Salah came out and was heading into the waiting bus.

The four men surrounded him as they protected the striker from even taking selfies with the waiting fans.

However, an exclusive report confirm that an extra security was assigned to the striker via the Egyptian Embassy in Kenya.

“Ahead of their trip to Kenya, the national association reached out to the Egyptian Embassy in Kenya and requested to make sure they provide enough security specifically for the player [Salah] and it was granted,” an anonymous source from the Egyptian Embassy said.

The source did not give additional details as to why the association only selected extra security for Salah despite the presence of other star players such as Mohamed Elneny who features for Arsenal, and Mahmoud Trezeguet of Aston Villa also from the Premier League.

“The request we know was only made for Mohamed [Salah], I don’t know about the rest or any other player,” the source further explained.

The Pharaohs only need a draw to officially qualify for the next year event in Cameroon.

Bafana’s bid to qualify for next year’s AFCON becomes difficult after Sudan beat São Tomé and Príncipe

March 24th 2021 at 14:36

Bafana Bafana head coach Molefi Ntseki and his technical team now face a tough task against Ghana in their bid to qualify for the next AFCON in Cameroon next year.

South Africa’s bid to qualify for the continent finest tournament in Africa in Cameroon next year has just taken what seems to be a difficult twist after group rivals Sudan beat São Tomé and Príncipe 2-0 on Thursday afternoon.

Bafana-Bafana was standing second place behind Ghana before they regulated to the third spot by the Sudanese‚ and they now have to win their match against the Black Stars of Ghana on Thursday at FNB Stadium‚ the same team that beat them in the corresponding fixture in the first round.

Ghana match is a must-win for Molefi Ntseki’s side. If they drop point against Ghana on Thursday‚ the trip to Khartoum would suddenly become a lot trickier than they originally imagined as they would need to draw or win against Sudan on Sunday to ensure qualification.

Sudan stands a higher chance of qualifying following their 2-0 against São Tomé and Príncipe giving them a boost on goal difference. But Bafana-Bafana can turn things around with a win against the black stars on Thursday.

Skin Bleaching Remains Banned In Gambia, Says Parliament

March 24th 2021 at 14:10

Skin bleaching products in Gambia remain banned. This is following a debate and vote by the lawmakers in parliament.

According to experts, skin-lightening or bleaching agents, especially unauthorised ones, may cause multiple health risks such as scarring, blistering, nerve and bone damage.

Many have also argued that the practice is one of the negative effects of colonialism and imperialism.

The practice is widely used across Africa as well as South Asia and the Middle East.

Skin-lightening has been banned in The Gambia since 1996, under former president Yahya Jammeh, who ruled for 22 years.

The former president fled The Gambia in 2017 after losing presidential elections to a relative unknown, Adama Barrow.

Barrow, during his administration, tried to lift the skin-bleaching ban last year, arguing that it discriminated against women.

Justice Minister Dawda Jallow also argued that criminalising people for using cosmetic products was an unfair punishment.

However, on Monday, several lawmakers argued in favour of maintaining the ban, citing health or religious reasons.

“The chemicals used in the production of skin-bleaching creams are hazardous to human health,” Momodou Camara, an MP, told the assembly.

Twenty-three MPs voted to uphold the ban, with 10 votings to repeal it, an AFP journalist said.

Other MPs were either not present in the chamber, or abstained from voting.

LIVERPOOL, ARSENAL AND PEP GUARDIOLA EYE SUMMER SWOOP FOR SAMUEL ETO’O 2.0

March 24th 2021 at 04:26

According to a report from Salzburger Nachrichten, Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool are interested and already eyeing a summer swoop for RB Salzburg’s Patson Daka.

The Zambian forward could just be the next big player to emerge from RB Salzburg following Erling Braut Haland.

Daka has found the net 27 times in just 31 games this season, including eight assists for the Austrian giants.

His recent form has now led to interest from Mikel Arteta and Pep Guardiola, and Jürgen Klopp who will all be battling it out for the 22-year-old this summer.

According to the Daily Mail, Zambia coach Milutin Sredejovic believes Daka can emulate what Cameroon legend Samuel Eto’o achieved in football.

Sredejovic said: “I would say he’s on the road to replacing what Eto’o once was in representing Africa and African football.

“He could be compared to Sadio Mane or Eto’o, with the level of skill and speed that he has, with the sense for space, sense of positioning, in the right place at the right time.”

Daka is an exciting player on and off the pitch and to see him attracting interest from the big clubs shouldn’t be a surprise; Everybody wants the next Håland in their ranks.

Liverpool may have an advantage in closing the deal with their relationship with the club. Liverpool signed Takumi Minamino from RB Salzburg last year, although the player is yet to take his place in the first team and is currently on loan to Southampton.

Takumi Minamino has only managed to score three goals in his 25 Premier League games since arriving on these shores.

The lack of a regular first-team shirt for Minamino might just be a red flag sign to Daka because a player of his quality needs to break into the first team the moment he arrives at the club.

So, Guardiola, Arteta, and Klopp need to make sure he’s the real deal, and not just a player who can only excel in a division of lesser quality to the Premier League.

Over 26 Million Children Lack Access To Water In Nigeria – UNICEF

March 23rd 2021 at 14:27

UNICEF has stated that nearly one-third of Nigerian children do not have access to enough water.

This report issued on Monday calls for urgent measures to address the problem.

In a statement to mark World Water Day, UNICEF said more than 1.42 billion people, live in areas of high or extremely high water vulnerability in the world.

This simply means that 1 in 5 children do not have enough water to meet their everyday needs.

Mustapha Emmanual Ushadari who is one of the experts on the commodity has appealed to the government to ”provide potable drinking water, especially to children”.

“Potable drinking water is good. The government should provide at least potable drinking water, most especially for the children. The kids, they need potable drinking water. Before going to school, they need to drink water, before doing their day-to-day activities”, Ushadari said.

UNICEF’s report further noted that the figures are particularly worrying, especially in Africa’s most populous nation.

“26.5 million Nigerian children, that is 29 percent of the nation’s children experiencing high or extremely high water vulnerability,” the UN body said.

About 100,000 Nigerian children are said to die annually of water-related diseases.

A UNICEF representative in the West African country noted that ‘’the world’s water crisis is here and children are the biggest victims’’.

UNICEF also said that despite “some progress” by Nigeria, ”there is still much more work to be done to ensure that all Nigerians have access to adequate, quality water and hygiene services.”

Although about 70 percent of Nigerians are reported to have access to basic water services, more than half of these water sources are contaminated, the UN body added.

5 Best Stock Trading Apps for 2021

March 23rd 2021 at 03:50
By: Saheed

2021 can be a great year to identify the best stocks to invest thanks to certain changes in the global macroeconomic context and in societies. This is a big chanche for you, no matter where you are; South Africa, Britain, Belgium, Japan, China, etc. Although the pandemic disrupted the market rules, many experts believe that this year may be the year of rebound, of reestablishment, as central banks support economies with cheap credit and low interest rates, and that money is expected to flow into international markets. In this post we will explain some stock apps; FXTM Mobile Trading App and 4 other apps.

Why a trading app?

Trading apps are investment software that allow you to operate from your mobile 24 hours a day (in case of Forex trading) and anywhere in the world without having to be in front of the computer all the time. While some brokers create their own dedicated mobile applications, others simply tailor their desktop platform to these devices.

FXTM Mobile Trading App

It stands out in the trading world for its simple way of handling, the search function bar is good and the classification of fixed assets, clear. You can activate the notifications option and receive alerts about: open and closed positions, announcements or / and demand for supplementary coverage, which can be sent to email. You can start with a free demo account.

xMobile by XTB

It offers complete access to more than 1,500 financial markets including currencies, index and commodities. The economic calendar informs you of current market news and events. It also promises to keep you abreast of what is happening in your portfolio through notifications and alerts. Xtb also offers an app for Smartwatch.

eToro

Full access to more than 1000 different opportunities to invest in CFD stocks, currencies, commodities, indices, ETFs, investment strategies with CopyPortfolios and you can even copy / follow the best investors. In addition, you receive notifications and alerts in real time of what is happening in the market and within the platform through your portfolio.

Naga Trader

The main vision of the Naga platform is made up of several menus. Where you can see what other users are posting in real time (like on Facebook). It has a section called “blog” and offers a news summary with all kinds of articles and news, both from the Naga broker and on the economic news of the day, state of the markets, etc.

MT4 and MT5 Apps (Admiral Markets)

As with the PC trading platforms, the famous multibroker platform MT4 and MT5 cannot be missing among the best trading apps. However and surprisingly, although most brokers offer this tool for computers, the same does not happen with mobile devices. Thus, you will not easily find brokers that have the software for Android or iOS. An exception is Admiral Markets, a broker where you can download both apps and try them (they don’t have any waste).

Just in: Chad disqualified from the African Cup of Nations qualifying

March 22nd 2021 at 11:18

Chad has just been disqualified from the African Cup of Nations qualifying on Monday on the ground that the country’s government dissolved the soccer federation.

The Confederation of African Football said it had ordered Chad to forfeit the two games that were scheduled to hold this week as 3-0 losses.

Chad was to host Namibia and Mali on Wednesday and Sunday respectively. And the team was already out of contention to qualify for the tournament in Cameroon next January and February.

The Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) decision is one of the first taken under the new leadership. General secretary Véron Mosengo-Omba left FIFA to run the Cairo-based governing body following the victory of the South African billionaire Patrice Motsepe as the new CAF president on March 12.

Motsepe was elected unopposed as FIFA president Gianni Infantino successfully brokered a deal.

This also means FIFA could now suspend Chad from world soccer as well. FIFA statutes allow for member federations to be suspended when governments are believed to have interfered in the independence of elected soccer officials.

CAR Ex-president Becomes New Rebel Leader Against Govt

March 22nd 2021 at 10:45

François Bozizé has become the new rebel leader in the Central African Republic as he takes over the leadership of the CPC, the Coalition of Patriots for Change.

CPC spokesman, Serge Bozanga on Saturday said the former head of state had responded favourably to the “call” of the six-armed groups that are members of the CPC, “asking him to take the lead” of the coalition as general coordinator”.

Created in December 2020, in the run-up to the presidential election, the CPC brings together six of the main rebel groups that control two-thirds of the Central African Republic.

Their main objective is to march towards Bangui, the capital, in order to bring down the government of President Faustin Archange Touadéra.

His various attempts have failed in the face of the response of UN soldiers and elements from Russia.

Since the invalidation of his candidacy for the presidential elections of 27 December 2020, Bozizé has formalised links with the Coalition of Patriots for Change.

Francois Bozizé has therefore left the head of his political party, the Kwa NA kwa, to devote himself to leading the rebellion.

Tunisian Police Clamp Down On Young Activists

March 22nd 2021 at 10:37

Hamza Nasri, a young Tunisian activist, who took to the streets as part of anti-government protests in recent months is afraid for his friends as he says he is now under police watch.

“I’ve moved house three times in recent months. I’ve stopped going to see certain friends so I don’t put them in danger,” the 27-year-old told AFP.

Tunisia became known for its democratic transition, its free elections and new liberal constitution after its 2011 revolution.

The popular uprising put an end to a police state and established freedom of expression that had never been experienced before in the North African country.

Now, about a decade later, in the face of limited reforms to the security and judicial systems, activists say the risk of arrest places a “sword of Damocles” over their heads.

In January, security forces arrested hundreds of youths, including many minors, from underprivileged and marginalised neighbourhoods across the country during several nights of unrest.

They have subsequently arrested several young activists who denounced what they saw as a repressive police response.

Nasri said he feared the country had taken a U-turn.

The law student twice spent 48 hours in custody after anti-government protests in the capital Tunis in December and January, and now risks more than three years in prison on charges including blocking roads and insulting a police officer.

“If I am sentenced to more than six months (in jail), it will go down on my criminal record and I can say goodbye to my dreams of being a lawyer,” he said.

In Tunisia, sex before marriage, same-sex conduct, social media posts deemed offensive and evidence of cannabis use in urine samples can all be punishable by imprisonment.

Observers say this leaves young people at risk when they stand up to the authorities.

Rania Amdouni, a 26-year-old rights and democracy activist, was sentenced to six months in jail this month for insulting police officers, though her sentence was reduced to a fine on appeal and she was freed.

Dozens of human rights organisations in Tunisia and abroad had called for Amdouni’s release.

Both Nasri and Amdouni are connected to the association Damj, which defends the rights of LGBTQI people.

“Life for a young person in Tunisia is about trying to avoid the police as much as possible,” said 25-year-old Ahmed Ghram.

Fulham’s Aina, West Brom’s Ajayi, Watford’s Ekong, arrive at Super Eagles camp for AFCON Qualifier

March 22nd 2021 at 07:33

Ahead of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches, four players named in the Super Eagles squad have arrived at the national team camp in Lagos for their two remaining matches against the Republic of Benin and Lesotho.

NFF has officially confirmed that Watford center back William Troost-Ekong, Fulham right-back Ola Aina and West Brom defender Semi Ajayi have arrived to face the two sides.

Ahmed Musa is the fourth player to show up in camp. The ex- Leicester City winger is currently unemployed after a proposed move to West Brom fell through last month.

Both Troost-Ekong and Aina were in action for their respective clubs on Friday and Saturday, although Ajayi has been inactive for over a month, with his last appearance coming against Burnley on February 20.

Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr has been hit by Covid-19 restrictions by French football clubs ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers as French-based duo Moses Simon and Samuel Kalu, including Spanish-based Kenneth Omeruo and Umar Sadiq have been blocked from traveling to link up with the squad.

The Three times African champions Nigeria, needs a win to book their ticket to the tournament in Cameroon.

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Mokwena insists ‘no league title has ever been won in March’

March 20th 2021 at 11:34

Even though Masandawana looks to be on course for a record fourth straight PSL title, one of their coaches is already playing down on it.

Rhulani Mokwena, Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach says there is still “a lot of work needed to improve” as they prepare to host Black Leopards at Loftus Versfeld on Sunday.

The Brazilians are currently leading the PSL, standing four points clear of the second-placed Golden Arrows who have played two more games than them.

Sundowns is bidding for a historical fourth successive league title but Mokwena feels a lot can still happen.

“A huge compliment to the players for the current space we find ourselves in. We appreciate a lot of hard work and players adopting life principles and infusing a soul into the game,” Mokwena told the Sundowns’ media.

“When we speak of life principles we mean brotherhood, selflessness and honesty. With honesty to their performances and this has led to the consistency that we find ourselves enjoying and of course, no championship has ever been won in March. No league title, no Caf Champions League title has ever been won in March.”

“Still in a humble way, there is a lot of work needed to improve and a lot of things to work on in relation to our schemes both defensively and offensively. We are humbled to appreciate the small milestones because for you to be blessed with bigger milestones you have to appreciate small ones.”

“While we appreciate the small milestones, we then galvanise ourselves for bigger challenges that lie ahead of us because we know that our April is going to be nine games and May is going to be really that moment when everything is going to be decided.”

Mamelodi Sundowns remain unbeaten in the PSL this season and will welcome Masandawana to basement side Leopards without in-form striker Peter Shalulile due to suspension. And Mokwena admits Shalulile not featuring in the game will force them to alter their game.

“We are going into this game without Peter Shalulile and that means we have to change our a little bit in a certain way our schemes because Peter is such an integral part of the squad and not just our offensive schemes but also defensive schemes,” said Mokwena.

“So we have to change a little bit and adjust the way we want to go against Black Leopards. It will be interesting to see how we deal with their build-up triangle of [Khomotso] Masia, [Sibongiseni] Mthethwa and [Edwin] Gyimah.”

Sundowns won 2-1 away in Limpopo in the reverse fixture between the two sides back in January.

Afcon qualifiers: Senegal FA writes French counterpart over decision to restrict 12 invited players

March 19th 2021 at 14:00

On Wednesday, the presidents of French Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 clubs reached an agreement to restrict foreign players in the leagues from traveling for International break outside of Europe.

The Senegalese Football Federation who has 12 of their players in the French leagues, have written a letter to the French Football Federation (FFF) to allow their players to take part in the final round of the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

On Wednesday, presidents of French Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 clubs agreed not to release any of their players for games outside of Europe

The Senegalese Football Federation have written a letter to the French Football Federation (FFF) to object to their decision to block players from participating in the final round of the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

French Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 clubs met on earlier this week and decided to keep their foreign players from travelling out of Europe during the international break due to the mandatory quarantine rules upon arrival back to their clubs.

The travel restriction came as a blow for Senegal coach Aliou Cisse whose 26-man squad for the games against Congo on March 26 and Eswatini on March 30, features 12 France-based stars.

The 12 players include Rennes goalkeeper Alfred Gomis, Reims striker Boulaye Dia, Monaco duo Fode Ballo-Toure and Krepin Diatta, PSG’s Abdou Diallo who earned his maiden call-up after dumping France for the West African country, amongst others.

Although Senegal has secured qualification for the AFCON 2022 tournament in Cameroon next year, the FSF in a letter signed by its General Secretary Victor Ciss protested against the late response of the French clubs to players’ invitations.

“The latter not having reacted within the period of six days foreseen cannot wait less than 5 days before the start of the international window ” from March 22 to 31″ to evoke a press release in order to justify a refusal to release so targeted foreign players summoned by matches outside the EU / EEA zone ” (European Union and European Economic Area), ” part of the letter read.

“In addition to the damage that this may cause, relative to the non-participation of the 12 players summoned by the Lions coach, it seems to me to highlight the totally discriminatory nature of this measure with regard to the statutory provisions and FIFA regulations and European legislation on equality and contractual freedom for players.”

The Senegalese FA finally pleaded with the French football association to work with the clubs and make their players available for next week’s matches.

“In this case, underlines the Senegalese party, it is by no means established that the clubs concerned have met the French authorities in order to allow the players to benefit from this exemption,” it continued.

“Taking all these considerations into account, we would be grateful if you, in view of the very short deadlines and the damage incurred, kindly take the appropriate measures for the release, by the French professional clubs, players regularly summoned by the Senegalese Football Federation.”

Tanzania’s Samia Sulu Hassan Sworn In As First Female President

March 19th 2021 at 09:14

Samia Suluhu Hassan has been sworn in on Friday as Tanzania’s first female president. This is after the sudden death of late President John Magufuli from an illness unknown to the public.

The 61-year-old, dressed in a black suit and red headscarf, took the oath of office in Dar es Salaam before inspecting troops at a military parade and receiving a cannon salute.

The inauguration was witnessed by members of the Cabinet and Tanzania’s former presidents Ali Hassan Mwinyi, Jakaya Kikwete and Abeid Karume. The former heads of state were the only ones in the room wearing facemasks to protect against COVID-19.

Tanzania's Samia Sulu Hassan

Hassan then went outside to inspect a military guard of honour.

“I, Samia Suluhu Hassan, promise to be honest and obey and protect the constitution of Tanzania,” she said before a room of dignitaries, who applauded when the brief ceremony was complete.

Under the constitution, Hassan will serve the remainder of Magufuli’s second five-year term, which does not expire until 2025.

Hassan’s inauguration comes two days after she announced the death of President John Magufuli, who had not been seen in public for more than two weeks. In her first public address, she announced 21 days of mourning for Magufuli and public holidays on March 22 and on his burial day which will be on March 25.

“It’s not a good day for me to talk to you because I have a wound in my heart. Today I have taken an oath different from the rest that I have taken in my career. Those were taken in happiness. Today I took the highest oath of office in mourning,” she said.

She said that Magufuli who always liked teaching had prepared her for the task ahead. “Nothing shall go wrong,” she assured, urging all the country’s people to work to unite the nation.

The Zanzibar-born politician’s career spans over 20 years as she passed through the local government to the national assembly.

A stalwart in the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), she was named Magufuli’s running mate in the 2015 presidential campaign.

The pair were re-elected in October last year in a poll that allegedly did not conform to normal electoral practices.

Hassan is the only other current serving female head of state in Africa alongside Ethiopia’s President Sahle-Work Zewde, whose role is mainly ceremonial.

She must consult the party about appointing a new vice president. Analysts say she could face pressure from powerful Magufuli allies within the CCM, who dominate intelligence and other critical aspects of government, and could try to influence her decisions.

President John Magufuli Death Halts Taifa Stars-Kenya’s Harambee Stars Duel

March 19th 2021 at 06:47

Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) has called off the friendly game between the national team Taifa Stars and neighbours Kenya’s Harambee Stars which was scheduled to take place yesterday in Kenya following the sudden demise of President John Magufuli.

TFF confirmed the cancellation of the friendly early yesterday after Vice-President Samia Suluhu Hassan announced the death of President Magufuli who died on Wednesday night.

The two Cecafa members were scheduled to play their second trial game yesterday at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, this is after their first game ended 2-1 in favour of the hosts Harambee Stars.

Clifford Ndimbo – TFF Information and Communications Officer, disclosed that due to the cancellation of the match the Taifa Stars will continue to pitch its training camp in Nairobi ahead of the AFCON qualifiers match against Equatorial Guinea.

Taifa Stars are in Group J for the race to Cameroon with four points from as many matches and need maximum points in the remaining games to seal their place in the finals.

Tunisia leads the group and has already sealed their place for 2022 AFCON after collecting 10 points from four games they’ve played. Equatorial Guinea occupies the second position with six points while Libya sits bottom of the table with three points.

“Kenya vs Tanzania is called off. With respect to our brothers, we have agreed to cancel. Poleni sana,” FKF boss Nick Mwendwa said on his Twitter account.

The cancellation of the friendly game was also confirmed by the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) which assured that the game will not go on as planned.

“Following the untimely demise of Tanzanian President, His Excellency, Dr John Pombe Magufuli, Football Kenya Federation, in consultation with the Tanzanian Football Federation, has made a decision to cancel today’s international friendly match between the national team Harambee Stars and the Tanzanian national football team, which was scheduled to take place at the Nyayo National Stadium, beginning at 3:00 pm,” FKF’s statement seen by Goal read.

“Football Kenya Federation wishes to extend its deepest sympathy and message of goodwill to the Tanzanian Football Federation, the family and friends of the late president and the good people of Tanzania. May the Lord bless you with the strength to sail through this tough situation.”

In a separate post, the FKF President Nick Mwendwa sent his message of condolence to the Tanzanian people.

“Our hearts go out to the people of Tanzania following the loss of President John Pombe Magufuli,” posted Mwendwa on Facebook. “On behalf of FKF and the entire Kenyan football fraternity, I wish you peace and solace during these difficult times.”

Kenya is set to face Egypt and Togo in the remaining qualifiers whereas Kim Poulsen’s charges are due to meet Equatorial Guinea and Libya.

Meanwhile former Kenya national side British tactician, Bobby Williamson concedes the games will be tough but exuded confidence that the East Africans will win the matches to advance and can get maximum points from remaining matches.

“Despite that, Harambee Stars are capable of beating Egypt at home and Togo away. The fact that they need six points to stand a chance of making it to Cameroon is a motivation.”

“It is the same case for Tanzania; they have a tough outing away to Equatorial Guinea before hosting Libya. But they have a chance of winning the games to qualify for the biennial competition.

“I wish both teams all the best. The more teams from Central and East Africa qualify the better.”

AFCON qualifiers: French clubs block the release of African players

March 18th 2021 at 13:16

Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) on Thursday announced that the French clubs have reached a consensus to restrict players from travelling for any international games outside of Europe.

The announcement came after club presidents from France’s top two divisions met with the LFP to discuss the upcoming international break and they reached an agreement to restrict their players, citing safety concerns of the coronavirus pandemic.

The implication is that many African teams will be without some of their key players for the remaining two qualifier matches for the upcoming 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) later this month.

The LFP maintains that their decision is based on the FIFA circular 1749 of 5 February:

“At the initiative of the presidents of the Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 colleges, a consultation was carried out on Wednesday, March 17 with all club presidents concerning players outside France A team likely to participate in a match outside of France, the EU/EEA zone during the next international period in March,” the statement read.

“In the absence of a ‘septaine’ exemption for foreign international players made available to their national team and in view of the response times imposed by international regulations, the clubs of Ligue 1 Uber Eats and Ligue 2 BKT have decided to unanimously this Wednesday, March 17, apply the FIFA circular of February 5, 2021, taking into account the many travel restrictions in the world.

“In this context, the clubs will not make available for selection the foreign players summoned for matches outside the EU/EEA zone during the next international period in March.”

The remaining two games of the 2022 AFCON qualifiers will be played during the upcoming FIFA break.

Following the report coming from top clubs in Europe, especially England, to restrict their players from travelling for international matches, it remains unseen whether CAF will decide to postpone the qualifier matches.

South America was forced by FIFA to call off their World Cup qualifiers matches scheduled for this month after Premier League clubs threatened to invoke “emergency FIFA Covid rules” and refuse to release their star players.

Tanzanian President, John Magufuli Dies At 61

March 18th 2021 at 06:09

Tanzanian President, John Magufuli, is dead. The leader popularly known as the ‘Bulldozer’ passed on Wednesday, March 17th.

At the time of Magufuli’s death, he was 61. He was quite controversial for his denial of the coronavirus pandemic.

His death comes only five months after he won a second term in a disputed election. He was 61.

“We have lost our courageous leader, President John Magufuli, who has died from a heart illness,” Vice President Samia Suluhu Hassan said on state television on Wednesday.

Magufuli fell ill on March 14 and had been receiving treatment at a hospital in Dar es Salaam, the commercial capital, she said.

Before his death, Magufuli hadn’t been seen in public since the 24th of February. This increased the speculations on social media that he was critically ill. Opposition leader, Tundu Lissu said on Twitter last week that the president had COVID-19.

His statement was rebutted by Prime Minister, Kassim Majaliwa, who urged citizens to ignore “baseless social media rumors.”

His aggressive leadership method fetched him the nickname, ‘The Bulldozer’. In his early days as Tanzania’s president, Magufuli was hailed for his efforts in tackling corruption, reducing wasteful government spending and improving the lives of poor farmers by waiving dozens of taxes.

He also spearheaded the development of new transport links, power plants and more than 1,700 health centers, investments that helped Tanzania’s economy become one of the world’s top performers.

However, Magufuli’s authoritarianism became more obvious as he centralized power in the presidency and unapologetically cracked down on dissent and media freedom.

He secured a second five-year term in October when he garnered 84% of the vote, the widest victory margin of any presidential candidate in almost three decades of multiparty elections in Tanzania.

The opposition rejected the outcome as rigged and the U.S. Embassy in Tanzania said credible allegations of fraud and intimidation, as well as the ruling party’s overwhelming win, raised questions about the election’s fairness. Several opposition candidates were disqualified from standing and the government instituted internet and social media site shutdowns that hampered its opponents’ campaigns.

Opposition leader, Zitto Kabwe has sent his condolences to Magufuli’s family and to Hassan, who is set to become the first woman president in the six-nation East African Community.

Born on Oct. 29, 1959, in the northwestern town of Chato, Magufuli worked as a teacher and industrial chemist before venturing into politics. He won election to parliament in 1995 and also held several cabinet posts before the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party chose him as its candidate to succeed President Jakaya Kikwete in 2015.

Magufuli refused to accept the existence of the Coronavirus pandemic in Tanzania as he maintained that the country was free of the disease. He also discouraged the use of face masks and advised his people to pray and undergo steam therapy to safeguard their health.

His administration also kicked against vaccination and said it was working on developing alternative natural remedies.

The President-elect, Hassan has announced 14 days of national mourning.

Kenya maintains its ban on Female Genital Mutilation pledged to end FGM by 2022

March 18th 2021 at 05:01

Kenya’s High Court has voted in favour of the ban on female genital mutilation (FGM) on Tuesday.

This is after a petition was filed by a female doctor to legalise it.

In Kenya, four million girls and women have undergone FGM, the ritual cutting or removal of some or all of the external female genitalia.

The country outlawed the practice in 2011.

In 2017, Dr Tatu Kamau filed a constitutional petition calling for the Prohibition of Female Genital Mutilation Act to be declared unconstitutional as it discriminates against “national heritage”. She argued that women above the age of 18 would have the right to choose.

But the three-judge bench voted against her petition and said revoking the constitution would be detrimental to women and that after observing survivors’ testimonies it was not convinced that any woman or girl would consciously and freely consent to FGM.

The Nairobi High Court also said there is no conceivable benefit of FGM.

“The implication of this is that FGM/C cannot be rendered lawful because the person on whom the act was performed consented to that act. No person can license another to perform a crime,” said Lady Justice Achode.

Kenya’s President, Uhuru Kenyatta pledged to end FGM by 2022. Yet the practice continues as some communities believe it is needed for social acceptance and it increases marriage prospects.

Kenya has made commendable strides towards ending FGM. Furthermore, the law could sentence individuals partaking in the practice to three years in prison, even if it is done outside Kenya’s border.

According to the United Nations, 21 percent of Kenyan women between the age of 15 and 49 have been cut and at least 200 million girls and women across 30 countries are also affected by the practice.

FGM can cause severe bleeding and other health issues, infections, infertility and complications in childbirth, the World Health Organization says.

Orlando Pirates win their first Group A match by defeating Enyimba in CAF Confederation Cup

March 18th 2021 at 04:59

Orlando Pirates maintained an unbeaten run in the CAF Confederation Cup with a 2-1 win over Enyimba of Nigeria in their first group stage clash at the wet Orlando Stadium on Wednesday.

The win moved the Buccaneers to the top of Group A with four points from two matches. The team will look forward to solidifying their position with another win in the next match against Al Ahly Benghazi of Libya next month.

Pirates had to wait till extra time to secure the win with a header by striker Tshegofatso Mabasa who made up for an earlier mistake of missing from the penalty spot.

Pirates took the lead after 26 minutes when Deon Hotto, a Namibian international, sneaked the ball into the net with a clever back-heel finish from a poor clearance from the Enyimba defenders.

For the Buccaneers, the opening goal was a timely reward as they have been pressing on Enyimba with several attempts coming from the likes of Linda Mntambo, Vincent Pule, Hotto and Fortune Makaringe.

Enyimba reacted quickly a few minutes by breaching the Pirates with a quick counter-attack that ended with Iwula Emmanuel in the box but was denied by alert Siyabonga Mpontshane between the poles.

But they kept on pressing and were rewarded with a penalty before the halftime whistle, which skipper Oladapo Tunde converted from the spot. The skipper showed nerves of steel to send Mpontshane the wrong way.

Referee Ngwa Blaise Yuven pointed to the spot Emanuel was brought down in the box by Mpontshane.

In the second half of the game, the action continued and the pirates kept on pressing to score and at 55minutes, Enyimba goalkeeper John Noble had to stretch at full length to deny Pule who unleashed a powerful pile driver from the edge of the box after he received a pass from Ben Motshwari.

Mabasa and Innocent Maela continued to press forward looking to increase the teams lead threatening Noble through a series of efforts.

The host won a penalty at 76 minutes when Gabadinho Mhango was brought down in the box by Ogbonnaya Nelson but Mabasa put his penalty kick over the crossbar.

However, Pirates managed to secure their victory through the effort of Mabasa who headed home in the dying minutes getting their campaign back on track.

Al Ahly vs. Vita Club: Pitso’s Al Ahly Secure Huge Win In CAF Champions League

March 16th 2021 at 15:40

Pitso’s Al Ahly secured a huge win and took a bigger step towards the knockout stages of the CAF Champions League after defeating Vita Club on Tuesday.

The defending champions manage to put their ugly start into the campaign after losing 1-0 to Simba SC and drawing 2-2 at home against Vita Club to secure a crucial 3-0 win against the Congolese giants in the reverse fixture.

Mohamed Sherif opened the scoring, finishing past Vita’s goalkeeper Omossola Medjo from a tight angle after being played in by Marwan Mohsen in the sixth minute.

Mohamed Magdy Afsha through a set-piece made it 2-0 from a long-range shot for the visitors 20 minutes into the game.

Al Ahly’s goalkeeper, Mohamed El-Shenawy ensured Pitso side enter the break with their two-goal lead after pushing a great strike on the post just before the half-time mark.

The hosts had a chance to pull one back at the 50th minutes but Luzolo Sita’s shot was denied by the woodwork.

Al Ahly dominated and controlled much of the rest of the game and preventing Vita Club from setting up more strong goalscoring opportunities.

They made it 3-0 when Taher Mohamed was superbly set up by Walter Bwalya and the former made no mistake in putting the ball past the goalkeeper.

The result means Pitso Mosimane’s men now have seven points, three more than Vita Club with two games to spare. And Al Ahly is now in the second spot, three points behind Simba, who beat Al Merrikh 3-0 in the other Group A fixture.

The win is a big one for Al Ahly and could once again secure their ticket to the knockout stages of the competition, in fact, a victory in their next fixture at Merrikh could see them proceed to the knockout stage.

Islamist (Isis-linked) Militants Beheading Children In Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado

March 16th 2021 at 14:35

Children as young as 11 are being beheaded by Islamist (Isis-linked) militants in Mozambique’s northern province of Cabo Delgado.

This is according to the new report from the aid agency, Save the Children.

The armed groups, locally known as al-Shabab (“young people” in Arabic), have been perpetrating terror for more than three years in the strategic province of Cabo Delgado, which borders Tanzania and is an area that is rich in natural gas.

More than 2,600 people have died in the conflict and more than 670,000 people have been forced to flee their homes, according to the United Nations.

Save the Children documented the account of mothers, including one whose name has been changed to protect her identity.

‘They took my eldest son and beheaded him’

She said her 12-year-old was beheaded near to where she was hiding with her other three children.

In her words:

“That night our village was attacked and houses were burned. When it all started, I was at home with my four children

We tried to escape to the woods, but they took my eldest son and beheaded him. We couldn’t do anything because we would be killed too.”

Another woman, whose name has also been withheld for protection, said her son had been killed by militants while she and her other three children had been forced to flee.

“After my 11-year-old son was killed, we understood that it was no longer safe to stay in my village,” she said.

“We fled to my father’s house in another village, but a few days later the attacks started there too.”

Chance Briggs, Save the Children’s Country Director in Mozambique, said:

“Reports of attacks on children sicken us to our core.

“This violence has to stop, and displaced families need to be supported as they find their bearings and recover from the trauma.”

On Monday, the United States Embassy in Maputo said US Special Operations Forces will train Mozambican marines for two months to fight against the jihadist insurgency in the Cabo Delgado province.

The clashes witnessed a major change when attacks were carried out for the first time just a few kilometers from a multibillion-euro gas project operated by the French oil and gas company Total.

The increased military response have drastically reduced atacks in the last few months.

However, the NGO Amnesty International on March 2 accused the Mozambican forces and mercenaries of “war crimes” for indiscriminately killing civilians during their struggle against the jihadist group in Cabo Delgado.

The army refuted the accusations.

Security Agents Prevent Another Mass School Abduction In Nigeria

March 15th 2021 at 11:19

An attempt to kidnap hundreds of schoolboys in northwestern Nigeria has been prevented by security agents, according to a statement issued by a state official on Sunday.

This comes days after dozens of students were kidnapped in the latest mass abduction.

The kidnapping of 39 students on Thursday was the most recent in a series of abductions. This has complicated the security challenges plaguing the armed forces controlled by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The security agents have also been combating a more than decade-long Islamist insurgency in the West African country’s northeast region.

“Between the late hours of Saturday night and the early hours of today, suspected bandits stormed the Government Science Secondary School, Ikara… in an attempt to kidnap students,” said Samuel Aruwan, the State Home Affairs Commissioner.

“Fortunately, the students utilized the security warning system in place, and were thus able to alert security forces in the area”, he said.

He added that a joint security force, comprising soldiers, policemen and vigilantes, were deployed to the school and “engaged the bandits, forcing them to flee”.

The military managed to rescue 180 students, including eight staff members, after a violent clash with the gunmen.

Heavily-armed gangs in the northwest and central Nigeria have also stepped up attacks in recent years.

They have recently turned their focus to schools where they kidnap students or schoolchildren for ransom, with Thursday’s abduction being the least fourth of such attack since December.

Aruwan said all 307 students in the school targeted on Saturday had been accounted for after a headcount.

In his words:

”The attempted kidnap was foiled completely and no student was taken from the school.”

On Saturday, local media published a video of some of the 39 students who were kidnapped from the outskirts of Kaduna city on Thursday, appealing to the government to rescue them without violence.

The recording was claimed to have been sent through a Facebook account of one of the hostages.

They appeared to be in a forest, surrounded by gunmen in military uniform. The video could not be independently verified.

Aruwan said the government was committed to rescuing the hostages.

“As a government, our focus is on getting back our missing students and preventing further episodes of school abductions,” he said.

Morocco To Legalise Use Of Cannabis For Medical Care Soon

March 15th 2021 at 10:47

Following the government’s ratification of a draft law, it is only a matter of time before Morocco fully legalises the medical use of Cannabis.

However, the government on Thursday maintained that a ban be put on its recreational use.

Moreover, the draft law for medical use still needs approval from the parliament.

The move would “reconvert illicit” cannabis plantations into “legal and durable activities that generate jobs”, according to the text of the draft legislation.

According to a report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) last year, the North African country is the world’s biggest producer of cannabis resin or hashish.

In a 2020 study by the Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime, Morocco’s production of cannabis was estimated at more than 700 tonnes.

The Moroccan authorities have released new figures this week that show that 55,000 hectares (around 136,000 acres) of land in the northern mountainous Rif region were being used to illegally grow hashish in 2019.

Although the authorities did not give more recent estimates, production was estimated at 45,000 hectares in 2018.

Legalising cannabis for medical use will place Morocco in a global market that is growing at an annual rate of 30 percent, and by 60 percent a year in Europe, according to Morocco’s interior ministry.

State regulation will improve farmers’ living conditions and protect them from illegal drug trafficking networks, the ministry had said.

Senegalese Music Veteran, Thione Seck Dies At 66

March 15th 2021 at 10:42

One of Senegal’s biggest music stars over the last four decades, Thione Seck has been confirmed dead by his lawyer.

The veteran singer died at the age of 66 in Dakar on Sunday.

“He died this morning of an illness at the Fann hospital,” lawyer Ousmane Seye told AFP, thus confirming the reports in the Senegalese media.

Thione Ballago Seck was from a family of “griot” singers. He was one of the West African country’s most famous musicians, alongside Youssou Ndour, Omar Pene, Ismael Lo and his own son, Wally Seck.

In the 1970s, he sang in the Orchestre Baobab, popular for playing a mix of Afro-Cuban salsa and traditional Senegalese music.

The singer and lyricist created Raam Daam in the 1980s, which has become one of the most popular purveyors of mbalax, a genre combining funk, reggae, dance music and local rhythms.

Some of his major hits include “Allo Petit”, “Orientissime” and “Diaga”.

Shortly after the announcement of his death, condolence messages and tributes were sent in. The former mayor of Dakar Khalifa Sall described Seck as “a true monument of Senegalese music”.

El Hadji Hamidou Kasse, a former journalist and current advisor to President Macky Sall, tweeted that Seck was “one of the artist heroes of an era”.

Senegalese media reported that Seck was to be buried in a cemetery in the Dakar area of Yoff on Sunday afternoon.

The singer’s last years were tainted by a long-running legal scandal involving counterfeit cash.

He was arrested in May 2015 after fake banknotes worth 50 million euros ($60 million) were found in his Dakar house.

He was detained for nine months ahead of a trial. However, all charges were later dropped.

Chippa United set up date with Pretoria Callies as cup fairy tale continues

March 15th 2021 at 00:43

The Nedbank Cup is now in the semi finals and the Chippa United will be hopeful in their quest for redemption when the Eastern Cape side travels to the nation’s capital to face Pretoria Callies.

In the draw held in Limpopo on Sunday night saw the Gqebera side were pitted against Callies and coach Dan Malesela will hope that his charges continue to sustain his stated hopes of remaining alive for as long as possible in the cup competition.

Chippa occupies the 13th position, just four points away from basement side Black Leopards and Malesela admitted a few days ago that he hopes to use the Nedbank Cup to rediscover their form in the league. However, the Chilli Boyz are still struggling in the league and are without a win in six matches.

Chippa’s positive after their 2-1 win against Kaizer Chiefs’ conquerors Richards Bay in the quarterfinals at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium on Saturday, one which appeared to delight the coach.

“Sometimes this football plays out in a funny way. You’ll find out that in the Nedbank you play so well and you win your matches within 90 minutes or penalties. But when you come to the league you still struggle to score goals‚” the Chippa coach said on the eve of the Richards Bay encounter.

Chippa will be home to high-flying Swallows FC. Malesela in their next encounter and will be hoping that his experiment has paid off.

Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila were able to book their place in the semifinals after defeating the Limpopo neighbours Black Leopards 2 goals to nil in Thohoyandou on Sunday night.

Ndabayithethwa Ndlondo put Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila in the lead in the 38th minute.

Ndlondlo capitalised on a poor clearance from the Leopards rearguard, stealing the ball from Tsepo Matsimbi‚ and stealthily sneaked it past advancing goalkeeper King Ndlovu to put his side in the lead.

The Leopards could not force their way back into the match after Alfred Ndengane beat Ndlovu from the penalty spot to put the issue beyond doubt in the 82nd minute.

Referee Siyabulela Qunta gave the side a penalty after Edwin Gyimah hacked down Lerato Lamola inside the area rather than attempt to clear the ball.

Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila will face either Orlando Pirates or Mamelodi Sundowns in the semifinals as the two Gauteng sides are yet to play their quarterfinal encounter due to continental commitments.

The venues and time of the two semifinals will be confirmed in the coming days.

Former FIFA Employee Mosengo-Omba appointed CAF General Secretary

March 14th 2021 at 15:44

Veron Mosengo-Omba, a former Fifa employee has been appointed as the new General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football.

Morocco’s Abdel Bah had occupied the role in an acting capacity since March 2020 until last week when he was replaced by the Swiss-Congolese.

Mosengo-Omba left his role at Fifa as Chief Member Associations officer to become CAF general secretary.

“On behalf of all of Fifa, we would like to thank Veron Mosengo-Omba for his excellent work,” said Fifa President Gianni Infantino and General Secretary Fatma Samoura in a joint statement on Saturday.

“[We] wish him the very best of luck in his next challenge as Caf General Secretary. Fifa also looks forward to working with him on future projects in helping to project African football to the summit of world football.”

Mosengo-Omba was involved in the CAF pre-election, talking to the presidential running candidates in Morocco two weeks ago. He was instrumental in convincing Motsepe’s running mates to step down and give their full support to the South African billionaire.

In the Moroccan capital Rabat, it was mooted that Patrice Motsepe would become the new Caf president with the other three assuming secondary roles.

FIFA had promised two of the candidates the position of vice president and on Saturday when the executive committee members met, Augustin Senghor and Mauritania’s Ahmed Yahya was named first and second Caf vice-president.

Senghor had said when he withdrew his candidacy that “the proposal submitted to us by Fifa, Morocco and Egypt was in the superior interest of the unity of African football”.

BBC Sport Africa had questioned FIFA on their regular visit to Africa countries. And why Mosengo-Omba and FIFA’s Deputy General Secretary Mathias Grafstrom were meeting with the candidates in Rabat on the 27-28 February, but there was no direct answer.

However, a quote by Infantino was suggested instead, with the Fifa president having said, on the 6th of March, when explaining his widespread travels across Africa:

“It is no secret that Caf has been facing some difficult times recently.

“So it is an opportunity to look forward to speak with everyone, to try to help African football in whichever way we can.

“I personally spoke with all four candidates for the presidency and many other presidents of associations, and I can certainly confirm that there is plenty of common ground between them,” he added.

Following the general assembly vote to increase vice-presidential tally from three to five, Djibouti’s Suleiman Waberi, Cameroonian Seidou Mbombo Njoya and Kanizat Ibrahim of Comoros have been appointed third, fourth and fifth vice-presidents respectively.

Kanizat Ibrahim has now become the first woman to be voted as vice-president of CAF.

South Africa’s Zulu King, Goodwill Zwelithini Dies At 72

March 12th 2021 at 11:05

The traditional leader of South Africa’s Zulu nation, King Goodwill Zwelithini, has died at the age of 72, according to the official report issued by his family.

This is after he was hospitalized for more than a month.

In several reports made by the local media, Zwelithini had health problems related to diabetes.

As the eighth Zulu king, Zwelithini reigned for more than 50 years. This makes him the longest-serving Zulu monarch.

Being the traditional leader of the Zulu nation, Zwelithini did not occupy a political position. He, however, had a lot of influence over the country’s estimated 12 million Zulus, the largest ethnic group of South Africa’s 60 million people.

The late King Zwelithini was also an outspoken critic of the government’s planned land redistribution policy in his time. He spoke against the policy because of how it affected large tracts of land belonging to the Zulu nation.

The Ingonyama Trust controlled by the King owns 29% of the land of the KwaZulu-Natal province, about 28,000 square kilometres, or 10,811 square miles. It is estimated that more than 5 million people live on the land, most in rural farming communities. The land could be expropriated from the Zulu kingdom if the government follows some of the proposals it has made.

History has it that the Zulus strongly resisted British colonialism under the leadership of King Shaka Zulu from 1816 to 1828.

President Cyril Ramaphosa, in his tribute speech, hailed Zwelithini for his contribution to the province’s economic and cultural development.

In his words:

“His Majesty will be remembered as a much-loved, visionary monarch who made an important contribution to cultural identity, national unity, and economic development in KwaZulu-Natal and through this, to the development of our country as a whole.”

Other prominent opposition politicians also expressed their condolences to the Zulu nation.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, the Royal House and the Zulu nation in this time of loss. May you find comfort and strength as you mourn and celebrate his full life,” said John Steenhuisen, leader of the opposition Democratic Alliance.

Bantu Holomisa of the United Democratic Movement also expressed his sadness at Zwelithini’s passing. He acknowledged Zwelithini’s impact in raising the awareness of HIV/AIDS.

In his words:

“As the custodian of Zulu tradition and customs, he specifically played a critical role in the Zulu nation during the height of the HIV/Aids pandemic in South Africa.”

30 Students Abducted From Forestry College In Kaduna, Nigeria

March 12th 2021 at 11:00

About 30 students have been abducted overnight by gunmen from a forestry college near a military academy in Kaduna, Northwest Nigeria.

This is the fourth mass school abduction since December.

Kaduna State’s Security Commissioner, Samuel Aruwan has confirmed that the students were abducted from the Federal College of Forestry Mechanisation, Mando, in Kaduna. He, however, did not say how many students had been taken.

“The police and the military are on top of the situation. We are trying to liaise with the school management to know the exact number of students that were abducted and then see the possibility of rescuing them unhurt and arresting the perpetrators,” Kaduna police spokesman, Mohammed Jalige said.

Some residents described the aftermath of the attack thus: “saw some of the students, teachers and security personnel all over the school premises and told us that gunmen raided the school and abducted some of the students.”

On Friday morning, relatives of the students were gathered at the gates of the college, which was surrounded by around 20 army trucks.

Criminal gangs, often locally referred to as “bandits” have increasingly been involved in kidnappings, across central and northern Nigeria.

In response to the recent mass kidnapping of 279 schoolgirls in Zamfara state, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered security agents “to shoot any person or persons seen carrying AK-47s in any forest in the country.”

Buhari has now directed a ban on all mining activities in Zamfara State. This also includes the imposition of a no-fly zone over the state.

OFFICIAL: Mamelodi Sundowns owner Patrice Motsepe elected as the new president of CAF

March 12th 2021 at 10:55

South Africa billionaire Patrice Motsepe has officially been elected as the new president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Mamelodi Sundowns owner Patrice Motsepe has officially been elected as the new president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The Mamelodi Sundowns owner was elected on Friday afternoon March 12 in Morocco after the elective congress members in all African countries including their representatives cast their votes.

Motsepe replaces Ahmad Ahmad, who occupied the position for three years before he was suspended by FIFA in 2020.

Motsepe emerged as the president of African football following the intervention of FIFA president Giovanni Infantino who brokered a deal with Augustin Senghor and Ahmad Yahya last week and promised to be Motsepe’s vice-presidents.

The third running mate, Jacques Anouma, announced his withdrawal from the race just days after Senghor and Yahya accepted Infantino’s offer and confirmed they will no longer be running for the presidency.

Motsepe went into the elective congress in Rabat as the only presidential candidate (unopposed) and was declared the winner.

U-20 Africa Nations Cup: President Akufo Addo Honours Black Satellites

March 12th 2021 at 06:40

Ghana president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo on Tuesday announced a cash reward of US$330,000 to members of the national U-20 football team, the Black Satellites for winning the U-20 AFCON 2021 competition held in Mauritania.

Additionally, the Technical Team will be rewarded with $10,000 for their contribution to the success of the team, making it a total of $330,000 on the entire team.

The president said the investment was necessary at this time because sportsmen and women only have a short life span of playing.

He also made a personal pledge of $5,000 cash each to goalkeeper Danlad Ibrahim, Captain Afriyie Barnieh, Overall Best Player Fatawu Issahaku and Head Coach Karim Zito.

Ghana defeated Uganda 2-0 in the final at the Olympics Stadium in Nouakchott, Mauritania on Saturday March 6, 2021

The president who was delivering his first State of the Nation Address in his second term hoped that the Satellites victory marks a new era of success in Ghana’s football.

Omari’s FIFA bid fails but Zetchi, Souare and Njoya cleared ahead of CAF election

March 12th 2021 at 00:19

The Stand-in (CAF) president Constant Omari has been barred from standing for the Fifa Council, where he already has a position, in Friday’s elections in Morocco.

Omari, FIFA Council member since 2015 has been a subject of an ongoing Fifa ethics inquiry relating to a decision to amend the billion-dollar Lagardere TV contract.

However, he had appealed his rejection for the post by Fifa’s Review Committee on 26 January at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas), who ruled against him on Thursday.

Fifa is investigating why CAF agreed to purchase around $20m of debt owed by a Beninois sports agency called LC2 GROUP to Lagardere Sports, the French company that had been handling the marketing and media sales of CAF until the contract was terminated in late 2019.

CAF had agreed to pay Lagardere $6.7m for the debt, which relates to outstanding TV rights payments, owed by LC2 GROUP in the amendment signed in early 2019 to the original 2015 deal.

Omari is not the only one under probe the outgoing Caf president Ahmad – whose Fifa ban for various ethics breaches was reduced to two years this week – is also being probed on this matter.

Guinea’s Antonio Souare and Cameroonian Seidou Mbombo Njoya are now both cleared by CAS to contest for positions on Caf’s Executive Committee.

They were both rejected by Caf’s Governance Committee earlier this year.

CAS has since Monday been busy ahead of CAF election with cases relating to the election, where South Africa’s Patrice Motsepe will be voted in and announced as the new president- unopposed – on Friday.

Motsepe’s rivals withdrew their candidacy last week and decided to give full support to Motsepe.

And following Cas’ decision on Monday to maintain a FIFA ban on Madagascar’s Ahmad – albeit while reducing his sentence – now further confirmed Motsepe as the next CAF president.

CAF makes U-turn on four countries hosting Afcon ties

March 11th 2021 at 11:00

CAF has agreed on a temporary lifting of the ban placed on four countries for the AFCON 2021 qualifier matches because of the current travel restrictions in Africa and around the world due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Earlier today, the Sierra Leone FA received a letter from CAF, which reads…

“The CAF emergency committee has based on the Covid-19 pandemic and current travel restrictions decided to exceptionally lift the ban on the Siaka Steven Stadium and allow only the remaining Afcon 2021 qualifiers (match-day 5 and 6) to be played,”

“After the above-mentioned match-days, Sierra Leone’s playing territory will automatically again be removed from the list of CAF approved stadiums and will not be available for selection on Caf competition management system.”

Burkina Faso and Burundi were also sent the same letter.

Initially, CAF had instructed the four countries to move their final home matches to a neutral ground after carrying out an investigation on their stadia. The investigation showed that the countries did not meet the CAF required standards to host international matches.

Following the instructions, Sierra Leone had gone to secure a venue in Conakry, Guinea as a host ground for their tie against Benin Republic.

But with this new development, Sierra Leone are now free to play at Freetown while Burkina Faso can now host their Group B match with South Sudan in Ouagadougou.

Also, Burundi, who was yet to secure a place but in talk with Morocco can now play their Group E tie in Bujumbura. And Niger vs Ivory Coast scheduled to hold on 26 March can now be moved back to Stade General Seyni Kountche in Niamey, Niger.

Ugandan Opposition Leader, Bobi Wine Calls For Release Of Political Prisoners

March 10th 2021 at 08:59

The Ugandan opposition leader, Bobi Wine has on Tuesday called on all Ugandans to “rise up peacefully and unarmed” in protest against President Yoweri Museveni, who has ruled the East African country for nearly four decades.

Museveni won a sixth term in office in January with 58 per cent of the vote. His main rival was Wine, who came second with 35 per cent and condemned the election as rigged.

The singer-turned-lawmaker refused to concede that he lost the elections. He challenged it in court, saying he won the day.

It did not take long before the 39-year-old withdrew his petition, saying the judiciary was stacked in favour of Museveni.

The politician made an address at the headquarters of his National Unity Platform (NUP) in Kampala. He said the time had come for public demonstrations against Museveni, who took power in 1986 and has ruled ever since.

In his words:

“I call upon you to rise up peacefully and unarmed to demonstrate against the regime that has oppressed us, exploited us and turned us into slaves in our own country.”

“We invite you to march to your respective district offices and seek answers,” he added without saying when the protests would take place.

Demonstrations against the arrest of Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, in November during the election campaign were brutally dispersed by security forces. This claimed the lives of at least 54 people.

Since the January 14 election, the opposition has alleged that security forces have been abducting their supporters.

Museveni and government officials initially denied these claims. However, they went on to admit that citizens accused of plotting against the state were being held by the military and other security agencies.

“We call upon all the citizens who feel oppressed, the women whose sons are missing, the Ugandans who voted and your results were shortchanged, all the oppressed Ugandans, come out and peacefully demonstrate against that impunity,” Wine admonished.

The police have since declared Wine’s call for protests illegal and warned: “organisers of these unlawful demonstrations to desist from participating in any unlawful activities”.

A statement released by the Ugandan police on Monday night reads:

“The police will not hesitate to arrest and charge in courts of law anyone, who will be found participating in these illegal activities.”

A joint police and military patrols have blocked off several roads in Kampala. Also, a police helicopter buzzed low over the NUP premises ahead of Wine’s announcement on Tuesday.

Morocco Vaccinates More Than 4 Million Citizens

March 10th 2021 at 08:54

According to the statement issued by the Ministry of Health in Morocco, more than four million people have been vaccinated since the beginning of the COVID-19 immunisation campaign in January.

In order to strengthen the country’s protection against variants of the novel coronavirus, all flights with Poland, Norway, Finland, Greece, Lebanon, and Kuwait have been suspended. Hence, there are a total of 26 countries that have been affected by air restrictions.

Since the first case was reported in March 2020, more than 480,000 people in Morocco have been infected with the novel, according to the statement released by the authorities. More than 8,500 people have died from contracting the virus.

The state of health emergency measure has been extended until April 10, with a night curfew until the middle of March.

Although regular flights are still operating, the country’s borders are still closed.

The aim of the free vaccination campaign is to immunize those over 18 or around 25 million people “with a view to gradually returning to normal life”.

Presently, Morocco uses British AstraZeneca and Chinese Sinopharm vaccines. However, according to local media, it intends to diversify its supplies with the Russian vaccine Sputnik V and the American Johnson and Johnson.

With just over 500 new cases detected daily, the pandemic seems to be on the decline in Morocco. This has, however, not increased the rate at which screening tests are carried out there.

The health crisis had a disastrous impact on the country’s economy and the unemployment rate jumped to 11.9% in 2020 from 9.2% the previous year. This is owing to the health crisis worsened by several seasons of drought.

10 Simple Things That Could Save Your Life During Travel

March 10th 2021 at 07:45

Just like everything else in life, travel comes with its own risks despite the many benefits attached to it. This is why it is important to always prepare for unexpected moments such as emergencies, especially before going on a new trip.

A list of what to take along with you almost always includes essentials and a few luxuries. And while packing in the carry-on bag, it might seem that it can’t contain additional items. But what if these additional items are the lifesavers you need?

Don’t worry. These things – despite their value – are quite simple and don’t take up much space in your luggage.

Read on to see the 10 simple things that could save your life during travel.

Hair ties

Your long hair that can be bonded in a ponytail would definitely need hair ties. But did you also know that these same hair ties can save your life during travel? Yes. This is what American doctor, Patricia Quinlan used to save the life of a passenger who lost consciousness in 2015. After assessing that his blood pressure was ”dangerously low” and that the passenger had an intermittent heartbeat, the doctor used her hair ties as a tourniquet to administer the 16 ounces of the saline solution provided by the cabinet crew. She also used whiskey to disinfect the needle.

Multipurpose tool

Even if you can’t take anything else, you are allowed to take along The Geeky Multi-Tool which contains about twenty different tools and can be used as a bottle opener, screwdriver tip, can opener, wire stripper among many other functions.

Rechargeable flashlight

This is an important travel companion. And it could also save your life. You may be in a dark, unknown place or even during hiking, the rechargeable flashlight comes to your aid at these times.

Rescue blanket

During an emergency, the rescue blanket comes in handy. Don’t ignore it as you arrange your luggage. It’s very affordable, thick and lightweight so it’s not much of a trouble to take along with you.

Personal alarm

This is important especially if you are travelling alone. It’s something that you can simply wear about easily without a fuss. Don’t neglect your personal safety alarm. It could be your lifesaver during an unexpected moment.

Portable charger

The portable charger or power bank is one of the most important things you need during your travel. Of what use is a phone without a battery during an emergency? This is why you should not forget this lifesaver.

Hand sanitiser

This is, of course, another lifesaver that you cannot afford to forget. You need to stay healthy during your travel. Imagine what could happen without a hand sanitiser within your reach as you come in contact (especially during a pandemic) with lots of people?

Water purification tablets

This is your best bet to stay safe during travel. It doesn’t matter where you find yourself, you can easily rely on these simple small tablets to protect you from unknown water sources. You can simply tuck them inside your pockets.

Reusable water bottle with filter

Simply carry a reusable water bottle with a filter and you are good to go even if the airport impounds other liquid items.

First-aid kit

There are small, travel-size kits that you can stash in your carry-on bag without worries. The standard first-aid kit includes band-aids, gauze, disinfectant cream, bug bite cream, aspirin, and tweezers. It is an important lifesaver during travel.

Caf cancels Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations just five days before kick-off

March 9th 2021 at 12:10

Just five days to the Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations scheduled to hold in Morocco, the Committee of the Confederation of African Football (Caf) has cancelled the competition.

This decision was taken in what seems to be an emergency meeting of the committee members.

“The Committee was made aware of the constraints faced by some of the participating member associations as well as the host country,” a statement from Caf said.

“That includes the fact that the coronavirus pandemic continues to present significant challenges for the organization of international sporting events.

“Taking into account the cancellation by FIFA of the Under-17 World Cup for which the U-17 Nations Cup was no longer qualifying, the Committee further noted:

The resurgence of the Covid19 pandemic has increased restrictions on international travels.

“For all these reasons, the Committee decided to cancel the 2021 edition of the Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations.”

A total of 11 teams had qualified for this year Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations and some countries such as Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Ivory Coast and Senegal had already arrived in Morocco to prepare for the tournament.

On Saturday, the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations ended in neighbouring Mauritania with Ghana emerging as the winner.

Benin Republic’s First Female Presidential Candidate Jailed, Accused Of Terrorism

March 9th 2021 at 09:55

Reckya Madougou, the first female presidential candidate that Benin Republic has produced since the country gained sovereignty in 1960 has now been arrested and detained for conniving to “assassinate several political figures”. This is according to the statement made by a government spokesman on Monday.

Madougou is also the first female leader of the largest opposition party in the West African country.  Her candidacy for the presidential election scheduled to hold on April 11 was rejected by the electoral commission on Thursday for failing to get signatures of support from 16 mayors or MPs.

The country’s descent into autocracy under the control of President Patrice Talon has caused many opposition figures to go into exile. Some other opposition members have been barred from office in the country.

In a brief meeting with reporters, Alain Orounla said that Madougou is the sponsor behind heinous crimes being orchestrated by some citizens in the country.

In his words:

“Compatriots who were preparing to commit crimes have designated Reckya Madougou as their sponsor.”

46-year-old Madougou, who is the head of the Les Démocrates party, was also accused of planning a political assassination.

“She was planning to assassinate several political figures,” he continued as he stressed that it was a “very serious offence of terrorism”.

The politician was arrested on Wednesday in Porto-Nov while in the company of Joël Aivo, another opposition candidate, who escaped at the time of the arrest.

Lawyer Renaud Agbodjo, when spoken to, said that Madougou was “indicted for financing terrorism”. He further said that an investigation was open, but that no trial was “in sight for now”.

A total of 20 aspiring candidates officially handed in their documents to run for the presidency. However, the electoral commission said only the three chosen had met the requirements.

There is Talon who is a cotton magnate. He was elected into office in 2016. He said at the time he wanted to serve a single term only until he changed his mind and announced his candidacy for the April vote in the middle of January.

He will be contending against the former minister, Alassane Soumano and Corentin Kohoue, a prominent opposition figure.

There is also Sebastien Ajavon, a key opposition leader who came in third in the last election. He was convicted of drug trafficking in 2018 and sentenced to 20 years in prison. He was sentenced in absentia on Monday to five years for forgery and fraud.

Ajavon, like many of the country’s opposition members, is currently living in exile in France.

Motsepe To Be Confirmed Caf President As Ahmad’s Ban Appeal Fails

March 9th 2021 at 05:38

Later this week, Patrice Motsepe will officially become the president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) as Ahmad’s five-year ban was reduced by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) to two years ban on Monday.

Ahmad who was suspended and slammed with a five-year ban had hoped an appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport would help to overturn the ban. But instead, it was reduced to a two-year ban preventing him from running for the presidential (CAF) election.

Motsepe, the South African billionaire will become the first South African to preside over the affairs of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Jacques Anouma, Augustin Senghor and Ahmed Yahya who were his running mates for the position have all pulled out and withdrew their candidacies over the weekend.

And the only obstacle to the 59-year-old’s coronation on Friday was Ahmad who many believed may come back to contest along with him if his ban was completely overturned.

But the 61-year-old Malagasy failed to do this.

“The CAS Panel has partially upheld the appeal and has reduced the length of the suspension imposed on Mr Ahmad to two years, starting today, less the period of suspension already served between 19 November 2020 and 29 January 2021, and has also reduced the fine,” CAS said in a statement.

The CAS reduced his ban from 5 years to 2 years and his fine from $200,000 to $50,000 citing lack of evidence to support the claim that he was involved in the Tactical Steel contracts and that he benefited from the deal while in charge in 2017.

Initially, when banned by Fifa in November, the global body had cited Ahmad’s ‘Duty of Loyalty’ breach – which was in connection to his role in the deal between Caf and Tactical Steel, which mainly manufactures gym equipment, for the latter to provide sportswear.

The Malagasy was charged along with a breach of ethics codes relating to the offering and accepting gifts or other benefits, ‘abuse of power’ and ‘misappropriation of funds’.

Motsepe, Africa’s ninth-richest man with a wealth of $2.9 billion according to Forbes magazine, will now lead CAF into the future.

The owner of Mamelodi Sundowns, 2016 Africa’s continental club champions, will be crowned Caf president when the elections take place in Morocco on 12 March.

Last weekend, Motsepe spoke at a press conference in Mauritania alongside his initial rivals – Ivorian Anouma, Senghor of Senegal and Mauritanian Yahya – and Fifa president Gianni Infantino about the decision to come together to back only his candidacy.

“African football needs collective wisdom, but also the exceptional talent and wisdom of every president of every country and every member association,” he said. “That’s what gives me confidence.

“When we all work together with the experience, talent, and passion, football in Africa will experience success and growth that it hasn’t experienced in the past. It requires all of us.”

He reiterated in his ten-point manifesto, his desire to build partnerships and sponsorship within the private sector to boost CAF as he spoke in the Mauritanian capital Nouakchott before Saturday’s African Under-20 championship final.

He also expressed his belief that an African nation will soon win the World Cup.

“Our objective must be that one of the countries will win the World Cup,” he said. “I think it will happen soon. The talent is there.

“Continuous investment in youth and academies and making competitions globally competitive will be key. We do need the private sector to get involved with financial resources. The commitment to improve and continue to invest is there and the governance transparency is an excellent foundation.”

Mohamed Salah Among Six Foreign players in Egypt squad for Kenya, Comoros games

March 8th 2021 at 12:58

Mohammed Salah has been called up by Egypt for the AFCON qualifier games coming up on the 25th and 29th of March.

This came shortly after the Covid-19 concerns across the world that has caused South America’s 2022 World Cup qualifying matches to be suspended due to travel restrictions in some countries and the fact that some Premier League managers have also blocked their star players from jetting off to ‘red list’ countries.

Although several calls have been made to suspend this month’s qualifying matches, and FIFA’s attention has been drawn to intervene in the suspension call but it looks like the AFCON qualifier will hold.

Mohammed Salah is among the six foreign-based players that have been selected by coach Hossam El Badry to play against Kenya on March 25 and Comoros on March 29.

The news comes just days after Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said he would stop Liverpool’s international players from travelling to World Cup qualifiers stressing that a 10-day quarantine after they return is impossible.

Other foreign-based players that have been named to feature in the qualifier match are Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny, Aston Villa’s Mahmoud Trezeguet have also been named in the Egypt squad, Olympiacos striker Ahmed Hassan Kouka, Al-Ittihad centre-back Ahmed Hegazi and Galatasaray signing Mostafa Mohamed.

South America was forced by FIFA to call off their World Cup qualifiers matches scheduled for this month after Premier League clubs threatened to invoke “emergency FIFA Covid rules” and refuse to release their star players.

However, the problem with South America is that majority of the countries, most especially Brazil – are already on the UK’s red list for banned travels.

Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, clubs had no right to withhold players from international duties. But that has changed since football returned to action amid the ongoing pandemic, and now forcing South American nations to postpone the World Cup qualifiers and the blue riband Brazil-Argentina clash on March 30th.

El Badry’s team who are looking to pull clear at the top of Group G, Will be hoping his foreign-based players will be allowed to travel as the case in Africa is not as serious as that of South America.

Egypt has won the competition three times in a row between 2006 and 2010 but has since failed to lift the cup. In 2017, they finished the tournament as runners-up and in 2019, they suffered a disappointing round-of-16 exit to South Africa.

Klopp remains stiff-necked on letting any of his players leave for the international duty as he can’t afford to lose his top players for both domestic and Champions League matches.

Salah played 90 minutes of football in their 1-0 defeat to Fulham on Sunday – just days after they lost against Chelsea.

Senegal Protests Worsen After Arrest Of Ousmane Sonko

March 8th 2021 at 09:43

The arrest of Senegalese opposition leader, Ousmane Sonko has worsened the protests in the country, leaving four killed.

The protests, which has been ongoing for four days, began as a rebellion against the ruling of the court that Sonko’s stay in prison is extended.

Antoine Felix Adboulaye Diome, Senegal’s Minister of Interior rendered a speech. He called for a return to order. This was after the Senegalese police fired tear gas as they clashed with supporters of the opposition leader, Ousmane Sonko.

The country still awaits the speech of the country’s president. However, several looting activities are fast becoming the norm in popular districts such as Point E, Sacré Coeur and Liberté 6 (where Auchan shops were targeted and Total petrol stations).

During this period, the broadcast of SEN TV and WalfAdjiri have been cut for two days. The two stations have now been switched to YouTube. However, the NetBlog organisation has observed a decline in the connectivity of Senegal on Youtube and Whatsapp.

The premises of the Futur Media group, Youssou N’Dour’s press group were ransacked while all these have been ongoing.

The clashes broke out on Wednesday between Sonko’s supporters and the police as he was on his way to the court for a case where he faced rape accusations.

The protesters are, however, not willing to give up their fight and cause as they have threatened to further worsen their activities by wrecking more havoc and instigating violence if Sonko, whom they regard as their leader, is not released.

“We issue a warning to President Macky. Let him know that he has not touched Sonko but the youth because Sonko is the hope of an entire nation. All we want is for him to set him free. If he doesn’t, today we’re on a break, we’ll listen to him by tomorrow. If we don’t hear from him, we’ll do worse than we have already done,” said a protester.

“If he sees the message of our peaceful march, we will demonstrate peacefully. But if he doesn’t react, we will opt for violence. We will destroy everything. If he locks him up, we will find him in the palace”, he continued.

46-year-old Sonko, who is due to appear before a judge in Dakar on Monday to answer questions about the rape charge, is popular with young Senegalese voters.

He has capitalised on frustrations over stubborn poverty and the government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Although he ran against President Macky Sall in 2019,  he finished third in a race that delivered the incumbent a second term.

Sonko is seen as a possible contender to Sall in 2024. However, his political future came into doubt in February after an employee at a beauty salon where he received massages filed rape charges against him.

Buhari Tells Nigerians To Get Vaccinated

March 8th 2021 at 09:28

President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammad Buhari has on Saturday enjoined all “eligible Nigerians” to be vaccinated against the novel coronavirus as soon as possible.

The Nigerian president, who was at a recent media event in Abuja, revealed that he was earlier vaccinated with the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, which is manufactured by the Serum Institute of India and made available through the global COVAX initiative.

According to the 15th President of Nigeria, the vaccine offers hope for a safe country that is free of the novel coronavirus.

In his words:

“Yesterday, our frontline medical personnel, top on the priority list, were vaccinated. Today, as a demonstration of leadership and faith in the safety and efficacy of the vaccines, I have received my first jab and I wish to commend it to all eligible Nigerians, to do the same so that we can be protected from the virus. I urge all state governments, traditional and religious leaders, to take the lead in the mobilization effort within their environment and spheres of influence. The vaccine offers hope for a safe country, free of coronavirus. I similarly urge all eligible Nigerians to present themselves and be vaccinated in accordance with the order of priority already mapped out, at the various authorized designated centres only.”

After making the speech, the Nigerian president then displayed his vaccination certificate for the cameras.

Thereafter, he lauded the response of Nigeria and other West African states to the pandemic, describing it as “robust, collaborative and united.”

He continued:

“The response in Nigeria and ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) sub-region has been robust, collaborative and united. It was driven by a collective knowledge of the fact that no country is safe until every country is safe’. The speedy development of the coronavirus vaccines is quite significant and underscores the collective resolve of humanity to overcome the pandemic. Similarly, the collaborative effort to ensure equal access has brought relief to poor and developing countries. I have been assured by the Presidential Task Force that the AstraZeneca vaccine which Nigeria has accessed, will arrive in batches beginning with the first batch of about four million doses already received.”

While the COVAX initiative was created to ensure that low and middle-income countries receive COVID-19 vaccines, challenges range from delays to limited supply.

Bafana Bafana’s Hope Of Qualifying For AFCON 2022 Lies On One Key Fixture

March 8th 2021 at 05:21

Bafana Bafana coach Molefi Ntseki recently announced the squad to battle for their two key fixtures in order to secure a place for the Africa Cup of Nations scheduled to be held in Cameroon next year.

The team knows that they have two weeks to prepare for the game against Ghana as a defeat could cost them to miss out of the continent’s elite competition in Cameroon and could put Ntseki on a path towards an exit.

The Bafana Bafana sits second in the Group C and are level on points with Ghana. The coach highlighted some of the issues and why he came up with the 26-man squad put together to face Ghana and Sudan.

Some of the issues he highlighted include limited game time for key players, goalkeeping concerns, and that which have plagued Bongani Zungu in recent weeks.

In February, Midfield maestro Zungu and four other teammates were dragged into a disciplinary hearing by Scottish League leaders, Rangers because of a house party they hosted, which was against Covid-19 protocol.

Although they have recently been integrated back into the team, lack of games could be a problem.

“Bongani Zungu went through his club’s disciplinary committee. He also sent me an apology about what happened. And hopefully would have learnt his lesson,” said Ntseki on Zungu’s inclusion.

“As a national team, we deal with discipline issues in our team. If it happens at a club, we respect how the club deals with it. We are happy to have him in the team.”

On-field minutes for the midfielder have also been hard to come by this season. The 28-year-old, who is currently on loan in Rangers from French second division side Amiens, has struggled to gain regular football time under Rangers manager, Steven Gerrard.

Finding a keeper

Also, finding a consistent goalkeeper to backup the SuperSport United’s Ronwen Williams is another issue. Only Ronwen Williams has featured regularly and is the favourite to start both games.

Itumeleng Khune has been showing indifferent form since the campaign began, making uncharacteristic mistakes which have led to goals.

“Khune was called into a meeting at Chiefs about those blunders. He said he was trying to play from the back. I also spoke to him and he told me some of the things he was going through. In training his coach is happy with his attitude. He’s played well, except for those four goals against Wydad [Casablanca in the CAF Champions League],” said Ntseki.

Bafana Bafana have won three and lost one in their last four games. The loss came against the Black Stars of Ghana who many people believe are the favourites to top the group.

“When you look at the log standings, as South Africa we have done very well,” stated Ntseki. “And when we do our permutations, any of the top three teams, if they win their matches, they will win the group.”

Ntseki’s side are scheduled to face Ghana in Johannesburg on 25 March, before their last battle with Sudan three days later in Khartoum.

Here’s Bafana Bafana’s full squad list:

Full squad

Goalkeepers: Veli Mothwa (AmaZulu), Ronwen Williams (SuperSport United), Itumeleng Khune (Kaizer Chiefs).

Kenyan President Visits The Nairobi National Vaccine Depot

March 6th 2021 at 12:45

The Executive President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta has paid a visit to the Nairobi National Vaccine Depot on Thursday.

This visit comes shortly after the country’s first shipment of over 1 million AstraZeneca/Oxford COVID-19 vaccines was received.

The World Health Organization (WHO)-run Covax facility sent millions of vaccines to the East African country as well as other African countries including Nigeria, Angola, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The first consignment is part of an initial allocation to Kenya of 3.56 million doses.

Kenyatta heaped praises on the joint efforts against combating the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic witnessed so far on the continent.

In his words:

”We are standing here today barely a few weeks after the most developed countries and beginning our own process of vaccination. Whereas previously we would probably have had to wait years and years while the rest of the world was moving ahead.”

”This time around, because of the proactive nature we adopted, because of working together as an African continent, we are barely weeks behind the rest of the world. And I think this is the spirit we need in Africa must continue to adopt until we overcome this disease.”

The President also appealed to all Kenyan residents to be at alert as the virus is still within the communities.

”I urge all Kenyans not to drop the guard, lets us not think that since the vaccines have arrived, life will resume normally, we have to continue protecting ourselves by adhering to the measures stipulated by the Ministry of health”, he said.

He further said that the government expects another batch by April which will cater for more citizens.

”We want to ensure all Kenyans are vaccinated to prevent COVID-19 infections, end of March/ April we are expecting another batch. We will receive more batches until our people are vaccinated across the country,” he added.

The WHO has also issued a note of warning against the domination of coronavirus vaccines by countries with freer financial means. They added that the end of the global health emergency is largely contingent upon the vaccination of all citizens in all nations across the world.

Consequently, the target of the COVAX scheme is to supply vaccines to dozens of countries in the first hundred days of 2021, and two billion doses by the end of the year. From this, about 237 million AstraZeneca doses will be delivered by the end of May to about 142 participating economies.

The AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine was manufactured by the Serum Institute of India and made available to the COVAX facility. This is courtesy of an advance purchase agreement between Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance and SII. They were procured and transported by UNICEF’s Supply Division in Copenhagen.

Liverpool FC Manager Jurgen Klopp Explains Why He Substituted Mo’ Salah

March 5th 2021 at 11:58

Liverpool FC manager Jurgen Klopp has come out to explain why he substituted Mohamed Salah when there was still plenty of time for the Egyptian to add to his tally against Chelsea on Thursday night.

Mo’ Salah left the pitch disappointed as he was replaced with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the 62nd minute despite having looked like the most dangerous Liverpool attacker on the pitch especially in the first 45 minutes of play.

The Egyptian superstar, however, could have bagged an assist at least if his long ball, which found Sadio Mane had been converted. Mane had only his countryman Edouardo Mendy to beat in Chelsea’s box but the Senegalese attacker miskicked the ball.

The defeat to Chelsea on Thursday night added to their poor run as they have now lost their fifth successive league match at home.

“I am happy when the boys are disappointed [to come off], that’s not a problem. I could have changed other players as well, that’s true,” Klopp said on the club’s official website.

Liverpool FC manager Jurgen Klopp explains why he substituted Mo’ Salah

“But the reason for the substitution was he looked in that moment like he felt the intensity really and I didn’t want to risk him, that’s all.”

Salah, being unable to find the back of the net before he was substituted now means he’s failed to score in his last three competitive matches.

Klopp added…

“That’s the situation. It’s really rare, I have known him now long and usually, Mo looks really surprisingly fresh until the end,”

“He didn’t look fresh anymore and I thought that’s a sign in our situation, I didn’t want to risk him. That’s it.”

Despite going three games without a goal, Salah, 28, still remains the favourite to win the Premier League Golden Boot. He’s currently the highest goal scorer in the league with 17 goals.

FIFA Rally Support For Patrice Motsepe To Win CAF Presidency

March 4th 2021 at 09:27

With just over a week until the next president of the African Football Confederation (CAF) is elected, FIFA has asked three candidates to back South Africa’s Patrice Motsepe, a source close to one of the four candidates told AFP.

With just a week to the Africa Football Confederation (CAF) presidential election, FIFA has moved to back South Africa’s Patrice Motsepe by asking three candidates to back him.

The world football body is now keenly interested in Africa, a source close to one of the four candidates told AFP. The source said the likes of Augustin Senghor (Senegal) and Ahmed Yahya (Mauritania) are now open to accepting the proposal of the International Football Federation and becoming vice-presidents themselves, while Jacques Anouma of Ivory Coast could be offered a role as advisor to Motsepe (if he wins).

FIFA want a better image in the sporting world so they can attract investors and sponsors. And Motsepe is one of few suitable personalities who is not implicated by the “former presidency”

“The idea is to put together the four candidates, under the guidance of Morocco, so that they can start to agree for a common program, and they come out to nominate only one candidate”, the source said.

Current CAF President Ahmad Ahmad has been given a five-year suspension by the world football governing body, FIFA. Although he’s appealing the suspension even if the suspension is overruled by the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS), he may not seek re-election as the president of CAF.

What the intervention of FIFA will bring is that, if Augustin Senghor and Ahmed Yahya give in, according to a corroborating source, then Jacques Anouma could contest against Patrice Motsepe.

The CAF Presidential election will hold in Rabat, Morocco on March 12.

Odion Ighalo Considering A Return To Nigeria National Team

March 4th 2021 at 03:07

Odion Ighalo, a former Manchester United striker who now plays as a striker for Saudi Arabia club Al Shabab, says he will have to decide on whether to return to the Nigeria national team.

Recall that the 31-year old (born on the 16th of June, 1989) retired from international football immediately after the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations – finishing as the top scorer. But he’s now wanted by Gernot Rohr.

When asked by BBC Sport Africa, if an international comeback is possible, Ighalo said: “I have been approached by the coach, but I haven’t decided yet whether this is a path I want to follow again.

We have been talking about it for a while and hopefully, soon I will make a decision.”

He added…

“I need to decide because I have huge respect for my country and the coach, so it’s only fair to let people know where you stand,”

Since he announced his retirement from international football, the Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen has been filling the void for the Super Eagles and he’s the overall top scorer in the 2021 Nations Cup qualifying.

But, Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr has struggled to find another striker who can assist and partner Osimhen at the front. Although, players like Paul Onuachu and Kelechi Iheanacho have been available for selection they have since failed to convince the German.

Ighalo’s recent form both from his loan spell in England and currently at his new club Al-Shabab of Saudi Arabia, where he has now found the net three times and an assist in five appearances, has led to the German calling for his return to the team.

Odion Ighalo captained the nation’s youth side at the Under-20 World Cup in 2009. But had to wait until March 2015 for his debut with the Nigeria national team where they played against Uganda. He represented the nation at the 2018 World Cup but failed to find the back of the net.

But in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign, Ighalo turned the table around scoring 7 goals to become the top scorer of the tournament in Egypt. His performance led Nigeria to a third-place finish at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

Ighalo, who made only two tournament appearances for the Nigeria Super Eagles, scored 16 goals at the international level, ranking him among the country’s top six all-time goal scorers.

7 Backpacking Tips That Anyone Visiting Africa Needs To Know

March 4th 2021 at 03:01

Africa is, undoubtedly, a blessed continent with beautiful landscapes, stunning scenery, a wide range of exotic wildlife among many other things.

This is why many often dream of backpacking Africa, with the sole aim to explore and live new adventures – which is a fantastic idea by itself.

But just before you take that step to visit Africa as a backpacker, there are some important tips that you need to know. This is where this guide comes in handy.

Here are 7 backpacking tips that anyone visiting Africa needs to know.

Don’t panic about the long driving distances

Prepare to travel long distances when you get to Africa. It is a big, wide continent and you will most likely be moving from place to place. Just try to enjoy the moment as you go on the bus ride. You will get to meet new people, visit places that you have only read of before, and taste new food – so, the bumpy roads or breakdowns should not be much of a deal.

Take along medicines, sanitisers, and soaps

On a backpackers budget to Africa, prepare to meet unpredictable weather and some discomfort travelling on a long bus, pickup truck or ferry. So, you would do well to take along some medicine and sanitisers to maintain your health even as you explore Africa.

Wear sunglasses to combat the dust

There will be lots of dust during your travel. So, protect your eyes from the dust with sunglasses. All your travel electronic equipment such as cameras, laptops or mobile phones should be protected with cases. Remember that you will be travelling on roads that are not tarmacked. Also, you should take eye drops along to keep your eyes from getting too sore. You should also not forget to pack clothes that you wouldn’t mind them getting dirty. To keep yourself clean, you can also take along baby wipes.

There is African time

In Africa, there is no rush or hurry. Things might happen after the scheduled time and you need to get along with it. So, if your bus or train is a few hours late, it’s fine. This is Africa. Some things are done the African way through African time.

Africa is really cold

The weather here is quite unpredictable and diverse. It can get really cold when you arrive at some places and you would need your winter gear to save you at that point. When backpacking, don’t forget this.

Use bus intervals to urinate quickly

Travelling on the bus means that there would be stops at intervals. You won’t be told how long you have when the bus stops. It means that for whatever reason at all that the coach does not have a toilet and you need to get down, do everything after you must have urinated because you might have between 30 minutes to an hour break on your journey.

Prepare for unreliable internet

On a backpacking trip to Africa, there won’t be stable access to the internet. While some hostels have WiFi, it still boils down to if the place has a fast-paced network coverage or not. This means that you would need to rely on your personal internet connection. You would simply have to get a new SIM card as you visit a new country. And this can be easily done, although you may require a passport and some other documents. So before backpacking, inform those that matter to you that your network access may be unreliable. However, a good thing about this is that you get to interact better with other backpackers in the hostels.

Real Madrid vs Real Sociedad, Spain – LaLiga, At Bernabeu, Time: 21:00

After a sluggish start to the season, Real Madrid’s pursuit of rivals and La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid is beginning to gather pace.

Real have recorded four consecutive league wins – the last three were bolstered by a clean sheet – and they can rack up a fifth straight success at home to Real Sociedad.

Zinedine Zidane’s men have also won six of their last seven league fixtures at the Bernabeu, with them being breached only once during that spell of dominance.

Real have accounted for Madrid rivals Atletico, Athletic Bilbao, Granada, and Valencia at home this season and they can add Sociedad, who have won just twice from their last seven away league outings, to that hit list.

Sociedad looked as if they would play some sort of part in the title race earlier in the campaign, but their results have become more inconsistent and away losses at Barcelona and Sevilla show there is still work to be done.

Imanol Alguacil’s team were no match for Manchester United in the Europa League, losing 4-0 on aggregate, and a star-studded Madrid should also have their measure. Our prediction is a home win or a draw for Real Madrid.

Recommended sure prediction for today Monday 1st March 2021

For the best result, we strongly recommend that you do not accumulate all the games on a single ticket, you should split the games on different tickets and each ticket should have at least 3 games. Please bet responsibly by splitting the games for maximum profit at the end of the day. We wish you the Best of Luck!

How To Stay Healthy During Travels (Post Pandemic)

March 2nd 2021 at 17:11

No doubt the Coronavirus pandemic has altered many things about normal activities. But life must go on regardless of this. And to bid goodbye to travel is almost impossible.

Hence, the need to adapt to the new situation that the global pandemic has created. It is possible to stay healthy during travel after the travel restrictions have been lifted.

All you’ll need to do is follow some necessary tips. Here they are.

Wash your hands and use alcohol-based hand sanitisers

Hand sanitisers with at least 60% alcohol should be your travel companion. It is one of the safest and easiest ways to reduce being at risk of illness. You will also need to make it a habit to frequently wash your hands with running water and soap for at least twenty minutes. It is in the absence of soap and water that hand sanitisers are used.

Avoid touching your face

This is one of the most important ways to stay healthy during travel. The virus has not been fully combated yet and this means that you may come in contact with surfaces that have been touched by someone else. So, touching your face may put you at risk because the virus usually affects the mucous membranes around your mouth, nose, and eyes. It is okay to wear sunglasses to keep yourself in check from touching your face.

Research about the medical services in the country you are travelling to

This is a very good way to ensure that your health is secured. The country that you are travelling to must have adequate medical services for both natives and visitors. Make sure that you are fully aware of this before taking the next step.

Ensure your immune system is strong

Your immune system needs to be very strong as you travel. You can simply achieve this by eating fruits and vegetables, getting enough sleep, and constant exercising.

Avoid travelling when sick

No, this does not necessarily have to do with COVID-19 – it’s any sickness at all. You can postpone the travel till when you feel better.

Maintain social distancing

Staying healthy during post-pandemic travel also involves maintaining social distancing. While trying to get back to the outdoor activities that made vacations exciting pre-pandemic such as hiking tours, kayaking, and paddle-boarding, it is important to understand that the state of things demands more caution now than ever before. Be careful of how you come in contact with different people and maintain a safe distance that does not put you at risk.

Sure football prediction for today. There are 40 accurate football predictions guaranteed to put money in your pocket. We pick out the safest games for you to bet on, for maximum profit. You can click here for more predictions.

Here is a preview of one of today’s free football prediction:

Chelsea FC vs Manchester United, England – Premier League, At Stamford Bridge, Time: 17:30

Thomas Tuchel’s unbeaten start to life at Stamford Bridge continued with an excellent 1-0 win over La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid in midweek, but on Sunday he faces his biggest test in the Premier League so far as Chelsea host Manchester United.

Chelsea has undoubtedly shown huge improvements since the run of one win in five games that saw Frank Lampard sacked, but against a side boasting an incredibly impressive away record they might find it difficult to return to winning ways after their draw at St Mary’s last weekend.

Manchester United could afford to give some of his first-team players a rest in midweek thanks to their 4-0 first-leg lead over Real Sociedad, but Sunday will see the likes of Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire return to the fold as they look to build on last weekend’s win.

The Red Devils have endured a league slump over the last month or so though. They have won just two of their last six league games and seen their brief title challenge evaporate as Manchester City have pulled ten points clear at the top of the table, but with Leicester level on points and West Ham and Chelsea both on the hunt, they can’t afford to drop the ball.

Chelsea heads into this game as fairly strong favourites, but you simply can’t ignore Manchester United’s resilience on the road. They haven’t lost a Premier League away game since mid-January 2020, winning 13 of their 19 games since and taking points off Chelsea, Spurs, Leicester (twice), Liverpool and Arsenal.

Tuchel has brought a new level of organisation to this Chelsea team, but their draws against Wolves and Southampton and the fact that three of their four wins have come against teams in the bottom six make this favouritism unjustified in my eyes. Backing a Manchester United double chance looks solid value.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side has drawn four of their last six league away games and Chelsea played out a 1-1 stalemate at Southampton last weekend, so that’s our pick for a correct score prediction.

Thiago Silva is the only minor concern for Chelsea and isn’t likely to be risked, while Olivier Giroud will be hoping to start up front after his overhead kick winner in midweek.

Paul Pogba is still ruled out but Donny van de Beek, Edinson Cavani, Scott McTominay and Daniel James could all feature. Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford will all return to the starting lineup. Our prediction is an away win or a draw for Machester United.

Recommended sure prediction for today Sunday 28th February 2021

For the best result, we strongly recommend that you do not accumulate all the games on a single ticket, you should split the games on different tickets and each ticket should have at least 3 games. Please bet responsibly by splitting the games for maximum profit at the end of the day. We wish you the Best of Luck!

10 Places In Africa For Solo Travellers

March 1st 2021 at 07:48

Not to sound cliche but there are many benefits of travelling alone. Not only does it boost your self-confidence but it also makes you meet new people and learn about different cultures.

Studies have also shown that solo travel helps reduce stress and anxiety. Maybe this is the first time you want to travel alone or you have been doing this for a while – whichever category you belong to, there is something for you here.

There are beautiful places in Africa where you can visit alone and soak in the beautiful experiences all by yourself.

Now, this guide shows you the ten most awesome places in Africa to explore as a solo traveller.

Cape Town

Cape Town just has to be on this list. It is a great place for a solo traveller to explore the beauty of the elements in this gorgeous city. Think of all that you can enjoy at the stunning Table Top Mountain, the colourful Bo-Kaap among many others. In Cape Town, visitors can go shark cage diving, shopping, or sipping on the great drinks in the abundant cafes in Cape Town. It will definitely be a worthwhile experience to come here as you’ll get to meet new people at the places you’ll be visiting including bars, restaurants, and hostels.

Cape Verde

The Cape Verde archipelago is the perfect place for a solo traveller to get the most out of. You get to explore the island and local cuisine where there are pork and chicken. In addition, you get to go surfing or quad biking. Thinking of security? Cape Verde is relatively safe for solo travellers.

The Danakil Depression, Ethiopia

Located at the border with Eritrea, this province of northern Ethiopia is full of climactic views such as the lava flows of Erta Ale Volcano, the picturesque virulent lagoons of the Dallol, and the salt desert. Come to Ethiopia to experience the Danakil Depression regarded as the cradle of humankind. Visitors are advised to come here on a guided group tour. It is also a great opportunity to make new friends.

Kasane, Botswana

For a fantastic African safari experience, Kasane in Botswana is a great place. For a fairly small town, there is a lot you can get up to here with the presence of shops, tour groups, and restaurants. The Chobe National Park famed for The Big Five is easily accessible and you can drive around yourself. From here, you can also visit Victoria Falls in Zambia. Most of the natives here also speak English. Come here alone and you won’t regret the experience.

Lake Bunyonyi, Uganda

Nicknamed the Pearl of Africa, Uganda is not just for spotting endangered wildlife. The beautiful Lake Bunyonyi is also one of the main sites of attractions right here. It’s safe to come here as you will be in the company of other travellers. You also don’t need to break a bank to visit here as it is incredibly affordable. The great part is that it’s safe to swim in the lake as it is the only hippo, crocodile, and bilharzia free lake in Uganda.

Lesotho

It’s safe to visit this small country in Southern Africa. You can go hiking or mountain biking here. A good place to stay as a solo traveller is Malealea Lodge. They work jointly with the neighbouring centre and finance several schemes that profit the inhabitants of the nearby community.

Malawi

A small country surrounded by Mozambique, Zambia and Tanzania in East Africa, Malawi is a good choice for a solo traveller who wants to explore Africa. First, Malawi is the home of Lake Malawi, the third-largest lake in Africa. The picturesque views here are awesome, including thick forests, rolling peaks in the North, hills and broad valleys saturated with wildlife in the South. Come here during March through June and October through November to get the best out of Malawi.

Mauritius

Although Mauritius is widely acclaimed as the perfect honeymoon centre, solo travellers are also welcome to have a wonderful experience here. You can relax alone on the beach, go diving or snorkelling as well as trekking or quad biking among many other activities that you can get up to while here. One of the safest countries in Africa, you don’t need to worry or fear about safety. You will have a lot to do in Mauritius – from shopping, enjoying the local cuisine to festivals involving music and dance.

Northern Senegal

While here, you’ll get to enjoy beautiful islands such as Ile de Goree and the Lac Rose waters. There is also the gorgeous city of Saint-Louis. You will also have a good and fun-filled time visiting the national parks including the Fathala Wildlife Reserve. For a solo traveller, friendly indigenes are important. And that’s exactly what you get here in Senegal. Your safety is also guaranteed right here.

Serengeti, Tanzania

Tanzania packs on a lot for the solo traveller to enjoy their stay here. For an awesome African safari experience, it’d be almost a crime not to visit the Serengeti National Park. Incredible wildlife viewing awaits you here. Visit during July and October to maximize the experience. On a budget, you can explore the Serengeti in one of the safest countries in Africa.

The Ultimate Marrakech (Morocco) Guide: What To Do, See, And Eat

March 1st 2021 at 07:42

So you want to go to Marrakech? Well, you are in luck as there’s a lot you can get to do in this gorgeous city.

You might be looking for a guide to put through your intended stay in Marrakech. You are in the right place.

This guide shows you the things you can get up to as well as the tasty cuisines you can enjoy during your stay in Marrakech.

Budget Accommodation in Marrakech

Come to Medina if you are on a budget. A good choice is Riad Massin. Here, you will have an unforgettable riad experience. There is also the popular Djemma el-Fna where you can take a walk from.

Luxury Accommodation in Marrakech

There is also luxury accommodation in the Medina. A good choice is Riad Dixneuf La Ksour where you get impeccably polished interior and exceptional service. You can also have breakfast consisting of fresh orange juice, fresh tea, coffee, hot chocolate, homemade bread, crepes, Moroccan pancakes and homemade chocolate loaf with fresh jams and honey.

There is also luxury accommodation in the new European part of the city. A good pick is Hotel Oudaya. Here, you will enjoy free internet access, a large and appetizing breakfast in addition to a private pool. This is the right place to have a getaway from the liveliness of the busy city.

Things to do in Marrakech

Visit the Saadian Tombs

These tombs date back to the 16th century. They were sealed by Moulay Ismail in the 17th century when he chose to build Meknes as the next sovereign city. These tombs were eventually discovered by France during a high survey in the early 20th century. Here, there are separate tombs for men, women and children and they are all encircled by cascading designs of multicoloured floorings and ornately sculpted frame-built arcs.

Go to see the El Badi Palace

This is also from the Saadian era. Known as one of the most beautiful palaces in the world during its time, this palace used to be filled with rich treasures. It is still a decent tourist centre famed for its palatial architecture and you will definitely marvel at the total size.

Visit Ben Youssef Madrasa

This place was built by the Merenids in the 14th century. To date, it is one of the most ancient tourist centres in Morrocco. Come here to get fascinated by the excessively intricate carvings of wood and limestone and geometric tiling on the walls, floors, and roofs.

The Medina

This is a palatial place to get lost in and wander about. Yes, you might miss your way many times considering the dead points, cramped alleys, and doorways. But you will enjoy the memorable experience.

Djemaa el-Fna

This is the hub for tourists to explore the Medina and the encompassing Souks. This Fna is usually the main spot of attraction for all kinds of movement and fun in the evening.

Souks

The Souks spread outwards in spokes right from the centre of the Djemaa el Fna. Here, you will find districts where you can purchase souvenirs from the craftspeople into metalworks, wood carving, tanneries, and shoe cobblers. Visitors are reminded to bargain well for the souvenirs they desire to get the most of this experience.

Majorelle Gardens

These botanical gardens are now managed by Yves St. Laurent. Founded in the early 1900s, they are now filled with blue temples and elegant plants in hundreds. Come here to relax and take a break from the hustle and bustle of the ever-so-busy Medina.

What to eat

Enjoy traditional Moroccan food with a French twist at a good place like La Nouvelle Sirene, Gueliz. Here, you can also get meat and prune tagine.

At Sandwich Toubkal, you can also get tagines, couscous Fridays, sandwiches with fries and harira soups. There is also orange/grapefruit cocktail in Stall 14 (of the juice stalls) at the Djemaa el-Fna.
