Sacked? Black Leopards look to have fired coach Lehlohonolo Seema

May 14th 2021 at 01:00

Black Leopards have parted ways with their coach Lehlohonolo Seema, with last week’s 3-0 loss to Orlando Pirates believed to be the last straw according to the latest media reports.

Seema has become the latest coaching casualty in the DStv Premiership with reports doing the rounds that Leopards have fired the former Lesotho International. Lidoda Duvha has endured a ratchet run of results of late, and find themselves rock bottom on the current log standings.

Leopards management seem to have given up on Seema

As things stand, Leopards are five points adrift from a 15th-placed TTM for a playoff spot, while being six points away from safety with three games to go. It now appears that the Limpopo-based efforts have run out of patience with the Seema, and according to FarPost, have decided to relieve the former Bloemfontein Celtic legend and coach of his duties.

READ | DRAMA! TTM PLAYERS RETURN NEDBANK CUP MEDALS IN PROTEST, BUT WHY?

The online football publication goes further to state that Seema will be replaced by his current assistants Morgan Shivambu and Mongezi Bobe for Leopard’s remaining games. These reports were fueled even further by the absence of Seema from the Leopards bench for their away fixture in the Eastern Cape against fellow league strugglers Chippa United.

The match highlighted an increasingly desperate looking situation at Leopards, giving off an uninspired performance. It would arguably prove even more frustrating for the clubs’ fan base, as their opponents on the day offered possibly their last remaining realistic opportunity for a crucial three points in the relegation race.

Coachless Leapords running out of fixtures to save themselves

The Thoyandou-based side will now set their sights on a home fixture against an out of sorts Kaizer Chiefs side in two weeks’ time. Chiefs themselves have flattered to deceive under their new coach Gavin Hunt, who himself is a former Leopards coach. Leopards should not be expecting any favours from their former mentor either though, as Chiefs’ race for a top-eight becomes trickier with each passing game, after their 1-1 draw in their Soweto derby fixture against Swallows FC on Wednesday.

Beyond that, Leopards have fixtures against Cape Town City who, themselves are without a head coach at the moment. Their final fixture against Seema’s first club Bloemfontein Celtic could come with their fate already signed, sealed and delivered.

Kaizer Chiefs | My worst year ever in 27 years – Gavin Hunt

May 14th 2021 at 01:00

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Gavin Hunt has admitted that the 2020-21 season has been the worst in his 27 years of coaching.

“I haven’t noticed anything. I’m not on social media anyway. So, I don’t know what is going on,” said Hunt.

“Personally, results-wise, this year has been the worst year ever in 27 years but if you understand football you see that there are a lot of things we need to do,” added Hunt.

Under Hunt’s tutelage, Chiefs are likely to finish the season with their lowest tally of points in the club’s history.

As things stand, Chiefs have only collected 30 points from 27 league games, meaning they can only finish the campaign on 39 points provided they win their remaining three matches.

Amakhosi’s dream of finishing in the top eight is also in jeopardy as they currently sit 10th on the PSL log.

Their PSL status is also under microscope as they are five points above the relegation zone.

Kaizer Chiefs complete the signing of star Bafana striker – report

May 14th 2021 at 00:44

Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly made their second signing ahead of the new campaign and this is one is sure to cause some controversy amongst the Amakhosi faithful.

The Amakhosi already secured the services of former Bidvest Wits and current Stellenbosch FC midfielder Phathutshedzo Nange and they have since roped in one of the league’s top goal scorers.

32-year-old Swallows FC striker Ruzaigh Gamildien has reportedly put pen to paper at Naturena and will join the club at the end of the season according to SunSport.

Gamildien has been linked with a move to the Glamour Boys for a number of months however many fans were reluctant on him simply due to his age.

Kaizer Chiefs land Bafana Bafana striker

“Kaizer Chiefs have signed Ruzaigh Gamildien from Swallows FC on a two-year deal, according to information reaching SunSport.” the publication reported.

“It is understood the Soweto giants opted for a short-term contract with Gamildien due to the striker’s age, 32, and they don’t want to commit to a long-term deal.”

Gamildien’s arrival at Kaizer Chiefs is expected to be but a second of many with the club set to undertake a massive renovation following their recently lapsed transfer ban.

Ruzaigh Gamildien is currently joint third on the DStv Premiership top goal scorers charts with 11 goals. He’s only behind Maritzburg United’s Thabiso Kutumela who’s on 12 goals while pace SuperSport United’s Bradley Grobler leads the way on 14 goals.

McCarthy’s pick for Goalkeeper of the Season award – and it’s NOT Mothwa

May 13th 2021 at 16:17

AmaZulu head coach Benni McCarthy has made a bold prediction as to who the goalkeeper of the season will be this term.

In his opinion, McCarthy feels Denis Onyango will walk away with the accolade, simply because of Mamelodi Sundowns’ dominance this season.

READ | KAIZER CHIEFS LATEST | GAVIN HUNT COMMENTS ON STUART BAXTER REPORTS

While McCarthy’s goalkeeper at AmaZulu, Veli Mothwa, has done tremendously well so far, the all-time Bafana Bafana goalscorer feels Onyango is the favourite for the award.

“I think Onyango would be a wise choice, should Sundowns win the league,” McCarthy told reporters.

READ | KAIZER CHIEFS INJURY UPDATE | DOUBLE BLOW FOR HUNT AHEAD OF SIMBA CLASH

“Mothwa is a top, top goalkeeper, but you have to look at the log and if you see who’s sitting at the top.

“It is Sundowns and they are at the top because they have got a formidable squad and a very good goalkeeper, Onyango,” he said.

Mothwa joined Usuthu midway through the current season from Chippa United, McCarthy is of the view that they wouldn’t have been second on the PSL log had another goalkeeper been brought in.

READ | GAVIN HUNT: HUGE PSL MILESTONE FOR KAIZER CHIEFS COACH

“I have assessed the league and I have seen teams and goalkeepers,” McCarthy continued.

“You can play for AmaZulu and cannot have the performance that this guy [Mothwa] has had. Any other goalkeeper would have come to AmaZulu, I don’t think we would have had the season that we are having, so that tells a lot about the quality of Mothwa.

Furthermore, McCarthy doesn’t think Mothwa can be disappointed in himself if he doesn’t win the Goalkeeper of the Season award, adding that the 30-year-old doesn’t need an award to earn his respect.

“If he doesn’t win the award, I don’t think he can be too disappointed because for me he’s been the best keeper this season and the most improved player.

“That alone makes him a winner. He doesn’t need to win any award to earn my respect,” concluded McCarthy.

Mothwa has kept 10 clean sheets in 24 league matches thus far while Onyango has kept 15 clean sheets from the same number of games.

“As concerned supporters‚ looking at dismal results and the perpetual decline of our beloved football club‚ we saw it fit to exercise this constitutional right and organise a peaceful and lawful protest to Naturena to raise our grievances with relevant Kaizer Chiefs authorities.

“We have followed all correct procedures to ensure that this march is both legal and courteous. We have met with law enforcement officials from JMPD‚ Kaizer Chiefs officials and media personnel looking for advice and permission. Amakhosi supporters have understandably been left unhappy at their team’s performances this season in the DStv Premiership.

With just three matches remaining Kaizer Chiefs are languishing in 10th place and face the very real possibility of not only their worst ever finish to a season, but missing out on an all-important top-8 finish which would see them qualify for next season’s MTN 8.

Kaizer Chiefs latest | Gamildien to Amakhosi in the news AGAIN!

May 13th 2021 at 14:06

Kaizer Chiefs are AGAIN reported to have concluded a deal that will see Ruzaigh Gamildien leave Swallows FC at the end of the current season.

For months, Gamildien was reported to have finalized terms of his contract with Amakhosi even though neither party was willing to confirm the news.

Now, according to Daily Sun, Gamildien has completed his move to Naturena and he’s expected to put pen to paper on a short-term deal at the end of the campaign.

However, Swallows chairman David Mogashoa couldn’t confirm or deny the reports, only opting to say: “I can tell you now, you might see him at Swallows next season.”

Gamildien is one of the favourites to scoop the Lesley Manyathela award having already scored 11 league goals this season.

However, he hasn’t hit the back of the net since summer, and Mogashoa believes rumours that Chiefs wanted him may have gotten into his head.

“I think that maybe went to his head that he was going to Chiefs,” said Mogashoa.

Gamildien (32) has been in superb form for Swallows, especially at the start of the season, and he was awarded the Player of the Month awards for October/November and December/January.

Subsequent to that, Gamildien received his first Bafana Bafana call-up in March, and that caught the attention of several clubs, including Amakhosi.

Orlando Pirates’ Siyabonga Sangweni: My heart breaks for Brighton Mhlongo

Former Orlando Pirates defender Siyabonga Sangweni says he feels for Brighton Mhlongo after a freak accident in training put the goalkeeper’s career at risk.

Brighton Mhlongo, who is a former Orlando Pirates gloveman, was struck in the face by a ball during a recent training session at TTM and now appears to be set for early retirement.

The 30-year-old paid a visit to an eye specialist after the blow left him partially blind and the medical advice was that he should retire from football sooner rather than later.

Sangweni, whose career also ended early due to a knee injury, says he feels sorry for Brighton Mhlongo but also urged him to accept his fate and do his best to move on.

“It is hard what has happened to him, and it is painful, and as someone who has experienced it, I don’t wish for anyone to go through it,” Sangweni told Sowetan.

“There are so many empty promises that are made. Mhlongo must stay focused and be clear about what he needs to do. His career is gone. He must do something else.

“He needs to get support from his family, and it will also depend on how he treated his family when he was still working.

“Importantly, I have a very courageous wife who supported me through thick and thin. I appreciate my wife for being there for me, and also hope that his wife will do the same.”

Majoro not in McCarthy’s plans at Amazulu?

May 13th 2021 at 01:00

Veteran striker Lehlohonolo Majoro’s days at Amazulu are reported to be numbered, as coach Benni McCarthy looks ahead to the next season.

These reports may catch many off guards, however, as Majoro has essentially been an ever-present for Amazulu this season. Beyond his 23 league appearances so far this season, “The Major One” has seemed to roll back the years, with his eight goals in the DStv Premiership making him the clubs top goal scorer as things stand

McCarthy planning for life without Majoro

Now with reports that McCarthy is targeting a Caf Champions League spot, it is believed that he is targeting a fresh makeover of his squad, which will include younger legs. Despite his impressive statistics this season, at 34 years old Majoro clearly doesn’t fit that mould. It is believed to be for that reason that McCarthy is willing to cut his losses with regards to the seemingly resurgent striker.

Rumoured to be following the likes of other squad veterans

These news may not come as much of a surprise to the eagle-eyed readers who have been following the proceeding at Usuthu closely. Widespread murmurs from certain sections of the media have regularly made mention of the uncertain futures of veterans Siphiwe Tshabalala and Tsepho Masilela. It is believed that the two former Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs players will be amongst the first to head towards the exit door.

A source who spoke to The Citizen seemed to concur.  “There will be a lot of players who are going to be released at the end of the season. Majoro is not the only one on the list, some of them know already, because what the technical team is planning to do is a long term goal and it wants young players. So, keeping these old guys is not really ideal,” said the source

READ | AMAZULU PREPARING SIPHIWE TSHABALALA FOR LIFE AFTER FOOTBALL

The source went on to explain that it wouldn’t just be a matter of releasing all the senior citizens of the squad, with a policy of what suits the squad make up the most being the one that will be deployed.

“They have to make room for the young guys. But there needs to be a balance between young and experienced players especially if their main target of qualifying to play in Caf competitions will materialise. But I don’t think Majoro is ready to be let go because he still feels like he can go for two or more seasons. If he leaves AmaZulu he will definitely try to find a new home because he wants to continue playing.”

So where will Majoro be playing his football next season? Watch space.

Kaizer Chiefs’ Bernard Parker loses his temper with Nurkovic? [Watch]

May 12th 2021 at 13:16

Kaizer Chiefs captain Bernard Parker was captured on camera uttering vulgar comments at his teammate Samir Nurkovic during the Amakhosi’s 1-1 draw against Swallows FC.

The incident took place in the dying minutes of what proved to be yet another disappointing outing for Kaizer Chiefs in the DStv Premiership.

Did Bernard Parker just said “ Listen to me mother fucker “ to Samir? It is bad at @KaizerChiefs

— Sydney (@sydneymaswangan) May 12, 2021

The Amakhosi battled back against Swallows FC to earn a 1-1 draw however the point done little in their quest to finish in the top eight.Swallows opened the scoring in the eighth minute after Kagiso Malinga attacked a diagonal delivery from Sifiso Hlanti to find the far corner with a first-time volley leaving Bruce Bvuma with no chance to stop it.

Kaizer Chiefs were back on level terms seven minutes later when Castro finished a loose ball into an empty net following a back-post header by youngster Happy Mashiane.

I had thought Bernard Parker was insulting a Swallows player. Turns out, he was insulting his teammate Samir Nurkovic. Called out a big insult that the cameras unfortunately caught. He kept asking "are you talking to me?" And he does this in front of the young Ngcobo.

One of the main talking points however came in the dying seconds of the game when Bernard Parker lashed out at what has been perceived to be Samir Nurkovic. Watch the incident below

May 12th 2021 at 13:13

Swallows were the first to open the scoring through Kagiso Malinga who beat Bruce Bvuma with a sublime finish in the eighth minute.

Chiefs were back on level terms seven minutes later when Leonardo Castro headed into an empty net from a Happy Mashiane rebound which came off the upright.

Swallows were dealt a major blow when Vuyo Mere had to be substituted early in the game through injury.

Both teams were then at each other’s throats for the better part of the first half but neither created clear-cut goalscoring chances.

The second half was rather a quiet affair with Swallows dominating ball possession from the word go.

Chiefs appeared more worried about going forward and getting the goals than playing beautiful football.

However, even with the introduction of players such as Dumisani Zuma, Samir Nurkovic and Lazarous Kambole, Chiefs still failed to get the winner.

Ultimately, both sides settled for a share of the spoils in what was Hunt’s 900th professional match as a coach.

As a result, Chiefs remain 10th on the log with 30 points from 27 league games while Swallows are fifth on the table with 41 points.

Gavin Hunt: Huge PSL milestone for Kaizer Chiefs coach!

But the real milestone is that Hunt has now been in charge of 900 professional matches in his coaching career.

His first coaching gig was at Hellenic in 1994, and this was soon after retiring from professional football due to a knee injury.

Hunt then had a brief stint with Seven Stars before assuming the role of head coach at Black Leopards between 2001 and 2002.

The now 56-year-old mentor would spend five years at Moroka Swallows between 2002 and 2007, coaching over 200 official games for them.

Hunt moved on to join SuperSport United in 2007, and he would leave the Tshwane giants for Bidvest Wits in 2013.

He enjoyed huge success with Matsatsantsa, delivering three successive league titles despite coaching in just 200 matches.

Hunt then spent seven years at Wits before joining Kaizer Chiefs following the sale of the Braamfontein-based outfit at the end of the 2019-20 season.

No any other coach in the history of the PSL has sat on the bench 900 times across all competitions.

“With us, I wouldn’t say any special preparation but mental prep is more important for us at this stage, if you look at our amount of draws, we need the win just as much. It is their home game, they will have to win, come out and open up but we know what to expect from Chiefs and we know their key players, so we’ll plan accordingly.”

Champions! 5 key moments that won Manchester City the Premier League

May 12th 2021 at 01:22
By: AFP

Manchester City are Premier League champions for the fifth time in 10 seasons – underlining their status as the dominant side in English football.

READ | HUGO BROOS WANTS BAFANA BAFANA TO PLAY ‘FANCY FOOTBALL’

A third league title of Pep Guardiola’s reign was anything but a foregone conclusion in the early months of a season like no other, played out almost entirely in empty stadiums because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Manchester City stumbled in the early weeks of the campaign but found their groove in mid-December to streak clear of the chasing pack and wrap up the title with three games to spare.

READ | DOES HUGO BROOS’ APPOINTMENT SPELL THE END OF ITUMELENG KHUNE?

Below, a look at FIVE defining moments that swung the title race Manchester City’s way:

Ruben to the rescue

After a 5-2 thrashing by Leicester in their first home league game of the season, it was hard to imagine Manchester City would go on to boast by far the best defensive record in the Premier League.

However, within 48 hours of the Foxes running amok at the Etihad, Ruben Dias arrived for £62 million to end Guardiola’s defensive woes.

The Portugal centre-back not only brought his own mix of physical power and poise on the ball, but brought out the best in a revitalised John Stones as they formed a solid partnership.

In the 10 Premier League games they started together between December and February, City conceded just two inconsequential goals in taking a maximum 30 points to seize control of the title race.

West Brom crisis meeting

“I didn’t like what I saw,” said Guardiola after Manchester City dropped points for the seventh time in their opening 12 Premier League games in a 1-1 draw at home to West Brom.

“I felt this is not the team I can recognise myself.”

The Catalan went back to the drawing board with his staff, while captain Fernandinho called a crisis meeting among the squad.

“We had to come back to our game, move the ball quicker, do more passes, stay in position, run less with the ball, do it together. We don’t have a specific player to win games, we have to do it together,” Guardiola later added.

A 21-game winning run followed to not only build a huge lead in the title race, but keep City on track for a treble.

Chelsea defeated despite Covid outbreak

Manchester City’s final game of 2020 at Everton was postponed just hours before kick-off due to a coronavirus outbreak among the squad that shut down the club’s training ground.

Less than a week later, Guardiola’s men travelled to Chelsea with just 15 senior players available due to positive cases.

Despite the adversity, City produced to that point their best performance of the season, sweeping the Blues aside with three goals in the first 34 minutes.

Fortress Anfield falls

Victory at Anfield was one of the few Premier League feats that had not been achieved by Manchester City since their Abu Dhabi takeover in 2008.

Liverpool’s title defence was already crumbling – after a 68-game unbeaten at home in the league stretching back nearly four years, Brighton and Burnley both won at Anfield prior to City’s visit.

City did not just end an 18-year wait for a league victory at Liverpool but did so emphatically with a 4-1 win thanks to a combination of sumptuous attacking play and two huge errors from Reds’ goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

Manchester United feel the pressure

Liverpool’s capitulation left Manchester United as the only other contenders to stop Manchester City, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men felt the pressure as soon as they became title contenders.

A 2-1 win at Fulham on January 20 took the Red Devils top of the table, although City had a game in hand to overturn a two-point deficit.

In United’s next league match, rock-bottom Sheffield United won at Old Trafford, kicking off a run of two wins in eight games that ended any realistic hope Solskjaer’s side had of ending an eight-year wait to win the title.

Mamelodi Sundowns set to sign a number of international stars!

May 12th 2021 at 00:51

Mamelodi Sundowns are expected to make a number of high profile signings at the end of the season with one of them already being a done deal.

Mamelodi Sundowns made a number of big signings at the beginning of the current campaign however it had a strong local flavour to it.

The Brazilians roped in some of the PSL’s top stars in Kermit Erasmus, Aubrey Modiba, Peter Shalulile, Rushine De Reuck, George Maluleka, Ricardo Goss, Lesedi Kapinga, Grant Margerman, Haashim Domingo, Mothobi Mvala, Khuliso Mudau and Gift Motupa.

The only player to join Mamelodi Sundowns that wasn’t from the PSL was Brian Onyango and he too is a former Maritzburg United defender.

Mamelodi Sundowns to sign a number of high profile internationals?

The defending league champions’ transfer business at the end of the current campaign is tipped to have an international flavour to it this time around.

Mamelodi Sundowns have already acquired the services of Slovakian hitman Pavol Safranko who comes with bags of European experience while another Al Ahly star is also on the club’s radar.

Al Ahly star Hussein El Shahat has revealed that the DStv Premiership giants have made him an offer to sign for the Chloorkop side next season.

Keagan Dolly has also been linked with a sensational return back to Masandawana while the Brazilians are reportedly also interested in re-signing Simba star man Luis Miquissone but they’ll have to cough up a salary of over R1.5 million a month for him.

It remains to be seen which international players the Brazilians are able to land but if anything is to go by, Mamelodi Sundowns’ attack in particular looks set to welcome some big name stars from abroad.

The introduction of international stars may very well mean the likes of Gaston Sirino and Bangaly Soumahoro could be leaving the club while Sundowns will have to fight hard to keep hold of star attacker Peter Shalulile.

Kaizer Chiefs latest | Baxter set for sensational return to replace Hunt!

May 11th 2021 at 22:00

Former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter is set to make a sensational return to Naturena to replace Gavin Hunt.

According to iDiski Times, the Amakhosi management has seen enough of Hunt to conclude that he’s not the right man to bring back the old glory days.

READ | KAIZER CHIEFS | FORGET TOP 8, RELEGATION PLAY-OFFS SHOULD BE HUNT’S WORRY

In his first season in charge of Chiefs, Hunt has found himself having to deal with the pressure from a section of disgruntled club fans and management.

His players haven’t really pulled in his direction either making life very difficult for him, especially in domestic competitions.

And it is for this reason Chiefs find themselves in 10th position on the PSL log, and worse, five points above the relegation zone.

Chiefs face the possibility of finishing outside the top right for the second time in three years, and almost every fan blames Hunt, his tactics and his man-management skills.

The only positive Chiefs and Hunt can take from the current campaign is reaching the group stages and the quarter-finals of the CAF Champions League; a huge success in the history of the club in the competition.

A number of high-profile players at Chiefs haven’t really done well for the club this season, and they have often forced Hunt to chop and change his starting line-ups.

In Hunt’s defence, other fans believe Amakhosi’s inability to reinforce their squad for two transfer windows due to the transfer ban, had a huge impact on the team’s below-par performances this season.

And whether or not Baxter would have done better with the current Chiefs squad is a topic for another day.

Baxter is the last coach to win the league title with Chiefs, and that was in 2015 before he requested to be released to coach in Turkey.

Kaizer Chiefs to sack Gavin Hunt for a familiar face! – report

May 11th 2021 at 17:51

Gavin Hunt could be heading for the exit door at Kaizer Chiefs come the end of the season and a familiar face has been tipped to replace him!

Kaizer Chiefs are currently in 10th place on the DStv Premiership log standings with just four games to go and the club are reportedly looking at getting rid of Gavin Hunt!

Hunt joined the Amakhosi with much expectancy at the beginning of the season in a blockbuster move however the Four-time league winning coach has found the going tough at Naturena.

Many expected the former Bidvest Wits coach to guide Kaizer Chiefs to the league title following last season’s final day heartbreak but six months in and the Amakhosi have regressed in shocking fashion.

Gavin Hunt’s side have earned just six league wins in 26 matches meaning they’ve dropped points on 20 occasions since the beginning of the season.

While it must be mentioned that Kaizer Chiefs made history by first qualifying for the CAF Champions League group stages and then following it up with a string of incredible performances that saw them qualify for the knockout stages as well.

Kaizer Chiefs to sack Gavin Hunt?

Their domestic form has been a shadow of their continental form and a coaching replacement is on the cards at the end of the season according to South African heavyweight soccer journalist Velile Mnyandu.

“Kaizer Chiefs could be in for their fifth coaching change in the space of just three years, with a return of Stuart Baxter being touted at Naturena.” – IdiskiTimes reported.

Stuart Baxter is currently unemployed after he was sacked in controversial fashion at Indian club Odisha FC last year. The 67-year-old guiding the Amakhosi to two league titles in three years at the club.

He further went on to lift the Nedbank Cup and MTN8 with Kaizer Chiefs and will undoubtedly be at the top of Kaizer Motaung’s shortlist should Gavin Hunt be axed.

Benni McCarthy blames ‘the ghosts of King Zwelithini’ for shock defeat

May 11th 2021 at 15:06

AmaZulu coach Benni McCarthy believes “the ghosts of King Zwelithini” came back to haunt Usuthu on Tuesday.

His side were on a record run of 16 unbeaten matches in the DStv Premiership before crashing to a 1-0 defeat against Baroka FC.

READ | SUNDOWNS COACH SPEAKS ON FACING ON FACING PITSO MOSIMANE AND AL AHLY

AmaZulu have turned Kings Park into a formidable fortress this season, but were forced to return to their previous home ground, the King Zwelithini Stadium.

A venue where AmaZulu were a shadow of the side they are today. Where they were relegation candidates last season, struggling to get any points at home.

READ | HUGO BROOS WANTS BAFANA BAFANA TO PLAY “FANCY FOOTBALL”

McCarthy blamed the venue change for his side’s loss.

“I think psychologically moving the game away from Kings Park affected the team a little bit because obviously this used to be the clubs home ground but this season we have played every game at Kings Park. We became quite accustomed to the stadium and the pitch he stated after the game.

The Usuthu coach believes this gave Bakgakga an opening to win today.

“We were very familiar with everything. We have got some brilliant results there and then you have your home game moved to another stadium where you haven’t played all season. It gives the opposition an opening to get in, but today the opposition team was very physical.” McCarthy explained.

McCarthy’s misery compounded as AmaZulu title hopes dashed

The loss has ensured that Mamelodi Sundowns now only need one win in their remaining four matches to secure a successful title defence.

AmaZulu now sit on 50 points with three games remaining, meaning they can finish on a maximum of 59 points.

The Brazilians already have 57 points, meaning three points will be enough for Bafana baStyle to secure the 2020/21 DStv Premiership title.

The race for second spot and CAF Champions League qualification has now been tightened by this shock defeat.

Luckily, for AmaZulu though, Orlando Pirates also failed to win after being held to a 0-0 draw against Stellenbosch FC at the Danie Craven Stadium.

Although, that is one point closer than they were to Usuthu at the start of the day.

The only goal of the match was scored in the 38th minute by Malawi’s Richard Mbulu.

The loss means Usuthu still trail log-leaders Mamelodi Sundowns by seven points but now only have three matches – and a maximum of nine points – remaining.

That means defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns only require three more points to claim a fourth consecutive – and 11th overall – PSL title.

Orlando Pirates have to beat struggling Stellenbosch FC today!

Orlando Pirates have to win their clash against Stellenbosch FC in order to keep their hopes of playing in Africa next season alive.

The Buccaneers travel to the Danie Craven Stadium this afternoon.

Kick-off is at 15:00.

For Orlando Pirates to have any hope of playing in Africa next season they finish their season as strongly as possible.

They are facing a side trying to stay in the DStv Premiership. Stellenbosch are in a tight relegation battle so it’s all to play for today for both sides!

Stellenbosch struggle for survival status

They are in a three-way struggle for survival with Maritzburg United and Tshakuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) – all on 25 points.

They are all just one point clear of 15th-placed Chippa United.

The Winelands outfit is winless in their last eight DStv Premiership matches. Coach Steve Barker is focused on the task at hand – survival.

We need to focus on our energies ahead. We obviously have a big game against Pirates. We have shown that we are competitive against any team in this league. We need to show the resilience and show the confidence and belief in what we are able to achieve‘, Stellies coach Barker stated.

Orlando Pirates poised to pounce into Africa

Pirates sit in fourth position on the table and need to win their remaining matches to ensure a place in the CAF Confederation Cup next season.

They are currently one point behind Golden Arrows who occupy third place, but have a game in hand.

The side finishing third automatically qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup next season. This is a bare minimum for Zinnbauer’s Bucs given the magnitude of the history of Orlando Pirates.

Pirates have five games left and cannot afford to drop points today. They will also be heavily focused on this weekend’s CAF Confederation Cup quarter-final clash against Morocco’s Raja Casablanca.

This presents the Soweto giants with a final chance at silverware this season.

Kaizer Chiefs | Ex-EPL star NOT the first to be keen on Amakhosi move!

BENNI MCCARTHY

In 2011, Benni McCarthy left Premier League side West Ham United for a return to South Africa.

Ugandan President gifts Mamelodi Sundowns ‘keeper Dennis Onyango with new car – PICTURES!

May 11th 2021 at 04:30

Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has gifted Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper and former national team stalwart Denis Onyango with a brand new Pajero Sport car reportedly valued at $52 490 (R738 0094)

According to Kawowo Sport, the handover of the keys to the brand new Mitsubishi to Onyango occurred as the president as well his wife Janet Kataha Museveni, who is also the Ugandan Minister of Education and Sport, hosted a delegation of members from the Federation of Ugandan Football Federation associations (FUFA). The delegation was hosted at the Entebbe State House.

Onyango flew in specifically for the event

Onyango had only just flown into his native earlier on the same day, from South Africa and was accompanied at the event by his mother together with an additional member of the family. Draped in a stylish checked grey suit, Onyango was on hand to receive the keys to the car, as well as framed number 18 jersey from the country’s president.

President Museveni was also reported to have shown his humorous side, entertaining his guests with numerous jokes, including one related to the shot stopper’s decision to retire from international duty and give up his role as captain of the Cranes, in order to maximize what is left of his club career.

He had recently retired from the Ugandan National Team

The 35-year-old Onyango made his Ugandan National Team debut 16 years ago against Cape Verde and amassed all of 79 caps for the Cranes during that period.

After the event President Museveni went on his official Twitter page to tweet the following; “My son Denis Onyango, Mama, Janet Museveni, myself and the entire country appreciate thank you for bringing us national pride through your heroic exhibitions on and off the pitch, in and outside the country.  We wish you the best of luck”

Kawowo Sport goes on further to say the Parliament of Uganda will hold a special plenary session in recognition of his efforts to the country over the years.

Onyango led the Cranes to two consecutive AFCON finals in 2017 and 2019 during his international career.

Ex-Bafana Bafana international disappointed in Kaizer Chiefs’ Itumeleng Khune

May 11th 2021 at 02:00

Former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Hans Vonk has expressed his disappointment in the trajectory of Kaizer Chiefs goal minder Itumeleng Khune.

It never rains but pours for the veteran Bafana Bafana international, as the list of people who seem to be showing concern about his concern keeps increasing. The latest to join the chorus of disapproval is former Ajax Cape Town goalkeeper Hans Vonk, who feels as if Khune has let himself down with the form he has displayed at Chiefs this season.

Khune cannot catch a break at the moment

The 33-year-old has been the subject of some erratic performances this season, with some of his schoolboy errors responsible for goals conceded and subsequently points lost by the Amakhosi. As a result, he has failed to cement his position as the club’s number one goalkeeper this season and has often had to rely on competition rotation or non-performance related reasons in order to get a look in this campaign.

Chiefs Coach Gavin Hunt has not been shy to speak out about Khune’s performances this season, which has hardly helped his cause in terms of protection from the club’s fan base. The club’s faithful have often voiced their displeasure with what they perceive as excessive use of social media from the 91 times capped national team player.

Former Bafana Bafana keeper Vonk voices concern

“When I was at Bafana and Khune came in, he was the best-talented keeper I’d ever seen. His distribution was incredible. I’m not close to the situation but from what I saw, he has let himself down when it comes to fitness. It can be better,” Vonk said, in an interview with SAFM.

This comes after fresh reports that the Ventersdorp-born keeper is on his way out of Naturena, with his contract up at the conclusion of the current season.

READ | ITUMELENG KHUNE ON HIS WAY OUT OF KAIZER CHIEFS? WANTS NEW CHALLENGE

The club does have an option to extend for a further year, however, but it is understood that Khune’s preference is edging towards a new challenge having been at the Soweto giants since 1999 as a development player.

George Maluleka never in the coaches’ plans, set for Mamelodi Sundowns exit

May 11th 2021 at 01:30

According to the latest reports midfielder George Maluleka is set for a Mamelodi Sundowns exit, as he is not part of the current regime’s plans.

The former Kaizer Chiefs stalwart caused quite a stir last season when he opted to snub Amakhosi’s contract advances, to sign a pre-contract with the defending league champions Sundowns. Now the latest reports allege the Maluleka was only signed due to the wishes of former coach Pitso Mosimane and has very few admirers left at Chloorkop.

He has struggled to make an impact at Chloorkop

Maluleka has found the going tough since making the move north from Johannesburg to Tshwane, as he has failed to displace the likes of Rivaldo Coetzee and a resurgent Andile Jali in the Brazilians midfield this season. The duo has been so good in fact, that even veteran midfielder anchorman Hlompho Kekana has failed to command a regular starting role, despite an eyebrow-raising long-term contract renewal at the start of this season.

Now with the likes of captain Kekana as well as fellow Bafana Bafana international Tiyani Mabunda both struggling to get any meaningful game time under the three Sundowns coaches, the situation has looked even grimmer for Maluleka and a source told The Citizen that the writing was already on the wall for him at Sundowns.

His days are believed to be numbered at Sundowns

“He is likely to be released. They have an overload of players in the position he plays in with a few other younger players set to be brought in. It is currently bossed by Rivaldo Coetzee and Andile Jali and the likes of Hlompho (Kekana) are struggling for game time” said the source.

Sundowns planning midfield rebuild

The source then went on further to elaborate on the reasons, offering a bit of insight on the thinking of the clubs’ management.

“He (Maluleka) is too far behind in the pecking order and they don’t see a need to keep him because they are unlikely to use him in future, and they want to build their own team with fresh faces and younger players,”

Considering previous reports that Sundowns had already told Mabunda that he is surplus to requirements ahead of a transfer window they intend on injecting their midfield with new blood in, it would be no surprise to hear that they’re willing to cut their losses one year into a four-year deal with 32-year-old Maluleka.

Kaizer Chiefs | Forget Top 8, relegation playoffs should be Hunt’s worry!

May 11th 2021 at 01:00

Kaizer Chiefs appear to be more worried about finishing inside the top-eight bracket at the end of the season but their biggest worry should be finishing in the relegation play-offs given their current form.

With just six wins from 26 league games thus far, Chiefs find themselves ninth on the log and within three points of eighth-placed TS Galaxy.

READ | PITSO TO BE SACKED BY AL AHLY? WHAT OPTIONS DOES MOSIMANE HAVE?

And while they are looking to dislodge teams ahead of them for that spot in next season’s MTN8 competition, they should also look over their shoulder as things could still get worse in the remaining four league games.

With 12 points still to play for, every team is fighting for something, and this includes teams currently behind Chiefs on the log.

It is for this reason, Gavin Hunt’s men should not rule out the possibility of finding themselves in the relegation play-offs on the final day of the season.

READ | KAIZER CHIEFS’ 13 TRANSFER TARGETS | HOW HAVE THEY FARED THIS SEASON?

As things stand, Chiefs are five points above the relegation zone and have some tough fixtures ahead – Swallows, Black Leopards, Golden Arrows and TS Galaxy are the teams Hunt and men have to face.

And these are tough teams who will NOT let Chiefs walk over them.

Should it happen that Chiefs fail to collect at least eight points from the possible 12 on offer to at least finish on 37 points, then chances are that they will find themselves in 15th position at the end of the season.

READ | THEMBINKOSI LORCH: FROM PIRATES TO CHIEFS OR SUNDOWNS?

That constitutes two wins and two draws – and it’s difficult to figure out where Chiefs will get those after failing to achieve that the entire season.

However, that worst possible scenario will happen IF teams such as Bloemfontein Celtic, Baroka, Stellenbosch, Maritzburg United, Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM), and Chippa United collect maximum points in each of their remaining matches.

So, Hunt and Chiefs should be more worried about plunging the team to an unwanted record than finishing in the top eight. After all, it wouldn’t be the first time they finishing outside the top eight should it happen this season.

Kaizer Chiefs legend launches scathing attack on Khama Billiat!

May 10th 2021 at 16:33

Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs legend Linda Buthelezi has urged Kaizer Chiefs to get rid of Khama Billiat ahead of the new season.

Khama Billiat joined Kaizer Chiefs in a blockbuster move from Mamelodi Sundowns in 2018 however the Zimbabwean ace has failed to hit the ground running for the Glamour Boys.

Khama Billiat arrived at Naturena at a time where many would argue was the peak of his career but fast forward three years later and he looks a shadow of his former self.

While injuries have derailed the former Ajax Cape Town winger, even when he has been fit for Kaizer Chiefs, he hasn’t lived up to the billing and former Amakhosi midfielder Linda ‘Mercedes Benz’ Buthelezi believes it’s time for Billiat to leave the club.

Khama Billiat is doing ‘nothing’ for Kaizer Chiefs – Linda Buthelezi

“Hey, Billiat must go my brother, he is doing nothing for us. I’m a Kaizer Chiefs person, he must go.” Linda ‘Mercedes Benz’ Buthelezi told Kick-off.

“I don’t think Chiefs signed him because they wanted to invest in him in a sense of selling him overseas. If that was the case we would have seen it by now. We can see from far that we invested in him so that he would score goals for us. That didn’t happen. So he must just go.

“The option they have on him means nothing my brother. An option is not an agreement, it’s a recommendation. It means nothing. I don’t think he will be signed for another season because he gave Kaizer Chiefs nothing ever since he arrived. It’s not like he will be missed. What we need are good defenders and also someone who will score goals for us.”

Billiat won three league titles, the Telkom Knockout cup and Nedbank Cup at Mamelodi Sundowns before joining Kaizer Chiefs while also lifting the prestigious CAF Champions League and CAF Super Cup trophies with the Brazilians.

The only thing we can ask is to stay true to our process because we’ve got our own process, we’re entering the last cycle,” Manqoba Mngqithi told SuperSport TV after the match.

“And we’ve got objectives to achieve in these last give games, we managed to get the result on this one and we’re looking towards the next four and what we get out of it and to be honest, be it we win all four of them it will be good for us.

“It doesn’t matter what happens, we have to make sure that there’s one at least one cycle that we get a crown and possibly this should be the one and the fact that the games have been pushed a little bit backwards gives us the breather in between the [CAF] Champions League matches.

“We must thank the league because in most cases we always complain that our fixtures are not right, this time I think we need to thank the CEO of the league and thank the league for considering that they should pull one more week to give us a chance to have a breather between the Champions League matches.

Mamelodi Sundowns secured their ninth away win of the DStv Premiership season after defeating TS Galaxy 1-0 at the Mbombela Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The victory lifts Masandawana to 57 points on the table, extending the gap over the chasing pack with four games to go in their Premiership campaign.

Sundowns technical made a number of changes to the starting XI that took on Maritzburg United, with Promise Mkhuma, Khuliso Mudau and Kennedy Mweene coming into the side.

Downs passing their way in and around the Galaxy half in the opening exchanges. Shalulile headed home from close range to give The Brazilians the lead in the 17th minute.

The home side were handed a way back into the tie when Mosa Lebusa was adjudged to have handled in the area but Mbatha’s spot kick. was saved by Kennedy Mweene.

Chances were few and far between as the home side remained resilient at the back and did not trouble Mweene or the Sundowns back line. With the clock ticking down, Maboe and Mudau both had chances to wrap up the tie but could not get their efforts on target.

Ultimately, The Brazilians got the job one winning by a solitary goal to make it three wins out of three in the month of May. Andile Jali picked up the man of the match award.

The team will now travel home to recover and recuperate before gearing up for continental action next weekend against Al Ahly SC.

Brighton Mhlongo suffers career ending eye injury during training

May 9th 2021 at 05:46

Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila head coach Dylan Kerr revealed devastating news following his side’s incredible Nedbank Cup triumph regarding goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo.

Tshakhuma won the Nedbank Cup thanks to a 1-0 victory over Chippa United on Saturday evening meaning they have now lifted their first piece of silverware in their maiden season in the top flight!

The victory however was somewhat overshadowed by tragic news regarding former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo who has been forced into an early retirement.

Brighton Mhlongo forced into early retirement after devastating injury

Former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo was reportedly involved in a freak training ground incident in which a ball knocked him flush in the face.

The incident left Mhlongo partially blind and after visiting a number of specialist eye doctors, it was since advised that he should retire from soccer as soon as possible.

“Let me give special mention to Brighton Mhlongo who is going to have to retire at the end of this season because of his eye injury,” Tshakhuma head coach Dylan Kerr said following the Nedbank Cup final.

“He made a speech to the players today which I thought optimize the character and the togetherness of the team. He is not going to go unnoticed because it broke his heart today to stand in front of his teammates knowing that he is never going to play football again.

“He made a very poignant speech today and I think that went a long way for them to perform the way they did in today’s Nedbank Cup Final.”

Brighton Mhlongo, 30-years-old, has made over 80 appearances in the PSL for the likes of Tshakhuma, Orlando Pirates, Bidvest Wits and Chippa United.

He kept 23 cleansheets in his career with the bulk of it, 18, coming at Orlando Pirates between 2011 and 2017. This website would like to wish him the best in his future away from soccer and a speedy recovery.

AmaZulu preparing Siphiwe Tshabalala for life after football?

May 9th 2021 at 04:30

AmaZulu has reportedly been preparing former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana international, Siphiwe Tshabalala for an off the field role at the club next season.

Following his much-publicized signing by AmaZulu, the veteran winger has failed to make an impact at Usuthu, only featuring twice in all competitions for the club. Those appearances came in the DStv Premiership and the Nedbank Cup but he has struggled to kick on from those two matches.

It is worth noting, however, that Tshabalala has not enjoyed the best of luck with injuries and health along the way. He had joined the Durban-based side already carrying an injury, and upon recovering from that he would suffer from Covid-19.

READ | AMAZULU BOMBSHELL: SIPHIWE TSHABALALA WASN’T REALLY SIGNED TO PLAY

During that period, Tshabalala’s former Bafana Bafana team-mate Benni McCarthy would arrive in KwaZuluNatal and take over the helm from Ayanda Dhlamini. The national team record goalscorer has then gone on to assemble a well-oiled machine at AmaZulu which has seen Tshabalala fall further and further behind the pecking order to such an extent that, the club has asked him to consider his future in the game altogether.

Tshabalala doesn’t appear to be in AmaZulu’s plans

It was initially reported by certain media publications that upon McCarthy informing AmaZulu of his transfer plans for next season, he also made it clear that Tshabalala as well as his former national team and Kaizer Chiefs team-mate Tsepho Masilela were not in his plans for next season. However, unlike Masilela, the club has found a way they feel could be suitable to use Tshabalala and his stature in the game to their advantage.

They could offer him a position off the field

Now an insider has since informed Kickoff that the club boss still sees value in Tshabalala in a different capacity for the club. “Shabba will be moved to the club’s marketing department while Tsepo Masilela will be released,” said the source in a short and simple conversation with the publication.

Whether that proves accurate or not, remains to be seen, what one thing does seem apparent and that is Tshabalala doesn’t seem like he will be wearing the green of AmaZulu as a player next season.

TTM buy top-flight status, win Nedbank Cup seven months later

Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo seemed overly ambitious when he unleashed a shot from well outside the box toward Ugandan goalkeeper Ismail Watenga in the 27th minute.

But his attempt deflected off the head of Burundian centre-back Frederic Nsabiyumva and landed in the corner of the net at a cold Free State Stadium.

It was the only goal of a Nedbank Cup final that produced few clear-cut chances with Katenga and opposite number, Zimbabwean Washington Arubi, seldom troubled.

Second division outfit TTM – short for Tshakhuma Tsha Manzivhandila – bought the franchise of disbanded Bidvest Wits after failing to win promotion last season.

After several months of poor results and chaotic administration, the ownership of TTM changed and Maltese coach Dylan Kerr joined the club based in Polokwane.

But the 54-year-old could not operate from the touchline until he received a work permit this week, and won his first match in charge four days ago.

RIP | PSL CONFIRMS TRAGIC DEATH OF MATCH OFFICIAL SHAUN OLIVE

“All my players were heroes tonight. We dug deep to keep Chippa at bay and deserved to lift the trophy,” he said.

“There will be little time to celebrate, though, as we continue our fight to avoid relegation with a match this Wednesday.”

Serb coach Vladimir Heric said a poor start contributed to Chippa United’s failing.

“We did not exist for the first 30 minutes, but were a different team in the second half, dominating possession but lacking penetration.”

Chippa United introduced Cameroonian Bienvenu Eva Nga and Liberian Anthony Laffor off the bench to try and bolster the attack, but they made little impact.

TTM pocketed R7 million for winning the final and qualified for the 2022 CAF Confederation Cup, the African equivalent of the UEFA Europa League.

Kaizer Chiefs player agent: ‘I don’t think Gavin Hunt will be there next season’

May 9th 2021 at 01:30

Kaizer Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt could be set for the sack at Naturena, if latest reports from a player agent are to be believed.

Hunt struggles at Chiefs have been well documented, with them currently occupying ninth position on the DStv Premiership standings. Amakhosi being on track to achieve their worst finish in their history has seen the veteran mentor’s position at the club in major jeopardy ahead of next season.

Hunt is slowly losing the confidence of the Chiefs management

The pressure now seems to have finally told, as according to a Chiefs player agent, indications from within the club are that Hunt will be shown the door. There have been plenty of questions asked about, why the club have not made any official communication about the 11 players whose contracts run out at this season’s conclusion.

READ | MAMELODI SUNDOWNS TO BEAT KAIZER CHIEFS TO SIGNING?

The agent has now seemingly cleared that confusion, while also dropping a potential bombshell and exclusive in the process. Speaking to Soccer-Laduma “I have been told to wait on my search for a new club for my client and I suspect that is what has been communicated to others as well because it doesn’t look like Chiefs will keep the coach beyond this season”. He revealed on condition of anonymity.

Hunt and Chiefs seem to be pulling in different directions

It then becomes a lot clearer and connects to wide spread reports that the Chiefs management have been hesitant with regards to fully backing Hunt by  committing to signing all of his targets. It has also been suggested that Hunt expressed his desire to release at least 15 of the current crop in an effort to free up space for an overhaul he deemed necessary ahead of next season.

READ | KAIZER CHIEFS AND GAVIN HUNT IN TRANSFER TARGETS DISAGREEMENT?

Club owner Kaizer Motaung Senior has since come out to the media stating how unrealistic that would be. That being just one in a long list of indications that the club’s management remain unconvinced by Hunt’s plans nor long-term future at Chiefs.

It was also reported that Motaung was not convinced by Hunt’s striker target Ruzaigh Gamildien from Swallows FC, as well as Bafana Bafana international Buhle Mkhwanazi. That will no doubt frustrate Hunt, and it remains to be seen whether he will accept working without full control, or even get the axe one season into his three-year deal with the Glamour Boys.

Orlando Pirates latest: Josef Zinnbauer must go says former striker!

May 8th 2021 at 23:54

Former Orlando Pirates striker Makhosonke Bhengu has urged the club to show current head coach Josef Zinnbauer the door at the Buccaneers.

Orlando Pirates youth academy graduate Makhosonke Bhengu believes it is of utmost importance for Orlando Pirates to follow the likes of Mamelodi Sundowns, AmaZulu and Kaizer Chiefs by appointing a local coach who understands the culture of the club.

The Buccaneers began the season in emphatic fashion by lifting the MTN8 title however they’ve fallen out of the league title race and given the quality of their squad, Bhengu believes ‘Zinnbauer must go!’.

Former Orlando Pirates attacker calls for Josef Zinnbauer’s sacking

“I don’t want to be diplomatic, Josef Zinnbauer must leave now, he tried shame but it’s not happening. The team is playing football we don’t recognize. Orlando Pirates is a big club and can’t be beaten like this, it should be competing for the league.” Bhengu told SoccerLaduma.

“A big team shouldn’t have more than two seasons of bad results, not even challenging for league honours. It’s a disgrace, same as Kaizer Chiefs which is unacceptable for big teams.

“I think they must look at local coaches, forget about foreigners. Pirates needs local coaches now with no pressure and intervention. Give them freedom and time to change things.”

Pitso Mosimane on the verge of being SACKED at Al Ahly! – Board member

May 8th 2021 at 18:49

Pitso Mosimane is on the verge of being sacked according to Former Al Ahly player and current board member Mohamed Fadl.

Al Ahly head coach Pitso Mosimane got off to a blistering start to life in Egypt after wrapping up the league title, Egyptian Cup title and CAF Champions League titles in quick succession however he finds himself under immense pressure six months into his tenure at the club.

The Kagiso born mentor finds himself under immense pressure and criticism in Egypt after a string of shaky results during recent weeks while reports from Egypt suggest a new coach may arrive soon.

Pitso Mosimane’s Al Ahly finished second in their CAF Champions League group behind Tanzania’s Simba SC while two losses and a draw in their last six league matches means rivals Zamalek top the standings albeit with two games in hand.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns mentor has since come under fire for recent results and an Egyptian Football Association board member has lashed out at him!

Pitso Mosimane’s days are numbered – Mohamed Fadl

“Pitso Mosimane is a lucky coach and is good during big games only,” Mohamed Fadl said as quoted by KingFut.

“People remember Al Ahly’s performance during the René Weiler era and the achievements of Manuel José only. Mosimane doesn’t yet know the potential of coaching Al Ahly. It is not right to play Walter Bwalya at the expense of Mohamed Sherif.

“Next season Bwalya will probably leave on loan, due to the inability of Mosimane to gradually integrate him into the team. Mosimane’s management of the games is poor. We saw Ghazl El-Mahalla and Al Masry completely dominating their matches against Al Ahly.

“Pitso Mosimane will not continue with Al Ahly and the club will search for a new coach. It’s not information I know, but rather an expectation. Mosimane is not a coach for a team of a size of Al Ahly. They deserve a better coach than him. I predicted Al Ahly’s victory at the last derby, which happened. The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has resolved to move the last day of the 2020/21 DStv Premiership from Saturday, 29 May 2021, until Saturday, 05 June 2021.

The current season has been highly compressed due to the delayed commencement date as a result of the covid-19 pandemic. The league has continued to make every effort to ensure that the fixtures are not changed or delayed save in the most extreme conditions. However, in certain instances particularly those relating to CAF competitions, this has been avoidable.

In order to remain true to the principle that the last matches in the DStv Premiership are played on the same day (s), the final fixtures have been altered as detailed in the attached amended fixture list.

Super League breakaway ‘bad boys’ slapped with hefty fine

May 7th 2021 at 14:59
By: AFP

UEFA on Friday announced sanctions, including financial punishments, against nine of the 12 clubs behind the aborted Super League project, after the clubs “apologised” and acknowledged “a mistake”.

READ | NEDBANK CUP FINAL: CHIPPA UNITED AND TTM BATTLE FOR MILLIONS

The governing body of European football said that “in a spirit of reconciliation” the nine clubs had agreed to a “Club Commitment Declaration” and accepted a five percent cut in their European revenue for one season.

However, three clubs, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus, did not sign the declaration.

UEFA said it reserved all rights to take whatever action it deems appropriate against those clubs that have so far refused to renounce the so-called ‘Super League’.

READ | AL AHLY V MAMELODI SUNDOWNS: DATES CONFIRMED FOR CAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE CLASH

“The matter will promptly be referred to the competent UEFA disciplinary bodies,” the statement concluded.

The nine clubs that opted out of the project – Tottenham, Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan and AC Milan – have agreed to a series of “reintegration measures”

“These clubs recognised their mistakes quickly and have taken action to demonstrate their contrition and future commitment to European football,” said UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin.

“The same cannot be said for the clubs that remain involved in the so-called ‘Super League’ and UEFA will deal with those clubs subsequently.”

The nine have agreed to forego five percent of their revenue from UEFA competitions for one season and pay, between them, a €15 million donation to support grassroots and youth football in Europe.

They also committed to participating in UEFA competitions for which they qualify and agreed to pay fines of €100 million if they ever seek to play in an “unauthorised” competition.

“It takes a strong organisation to admit making a mistake especially in these days of trial by social media. These clubs have done just that,” said Ceferin.

“In accepting their commitments and willingness to repair the disruption they caused, UEFA wants to put this chapter behind it and move forward in a positive spirit.”

UEFA has approved reintegration measures for nine clubs involved in the so-called ‘Super League’.

“With new challenges we can’t just expect to bring a whole new team in because the players that work for us have done their duty for the club. We now have to look and scout and see which three‚ four‚ five players we can bring in and make what we already have better.

Kaizer Chiefs legend wants club to go all out to sign Sundowns star

May 7th 2021 at 09:04

Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Thembinkosi Biyela has urged the club to ‘break the bank’ to sign Mamelodi Sundowns star Themba Zwane.

Zwane is perhaps the hottest property in South African football right now and is in the best form of his life.

Biyela believes that the attacking star will unlock the best from former teammate Khama Billiat and should be a priority signing.

Kaizer Chiefs should break the bank to sign Zwane

While Billiat joined Chiefs from Sundowns, he was out of contract and the reality is it would take an obscene amount of money for the Motsepe clan to sell their star man to the Motaungs.

“Chiefs should break the bank for Zwane because they don’t have a superstar at the moment. Back in the day, big clubs used to have superstars and I was at Chiefs and we used to have Doctor (Khumalo), Pirates used to have Teboho Moloi and Sundowns had the likes (Harold) Legodi and others,” Biyela told Soccer Laduma

Biyela doesn’t believe Kaizer Chiefs need to sign as many as 15 players as previously suggested but feels that eight top draw talents could restore the club to glory.

Amakhosi need about eight top players

Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly targeted Buhle Mkhwanazi and Njabulo Ngcobo as defensive additions and Biyela agrees they would also be a great fit for Gavin Hunt.

“I think eight players would be enough for Chiefs to add to their current squad and mix them with the youngsters that are coming up, and some of whom have already been doing well in the first team. I know that Gavin likes the players who are tall and especially in defence and that’s why I am suggesting that they should go for Mkhwanazi and Ngcobo in making defensive additions,” said Biyela.

Kaizer Chiefs continue to generate endless streams of speculation ahead of what is expected to be a busy closed season for the Soweto Giants.

Orlando Pirates coach has no intention of developing Ndlovu as a fullback

May 7th 2021 at 07:29

Orlando Pirates head coach Josef Zinnbauer says that Siphesihle Ndlovu has been deployed at right back out of necessity not design.

Ndlovu impressed in midfield during Pirates 3-0 midweek win over Black Leopards and Zinnbauer revealed that the plans for the future are to deploy him further up the park.

Siphesihle Ndlovu still a midfielder

Zinnbauer lauded the 24-year-old’s versatility while conceding that he was playing out of position.

Defender Wayde Jooste returned for the visit of Lidoda Duvha, and put in a man of the match performance in his 100th league appearance for the club.

Zinnbauer credited Jooste with being the driving force behind the improved performance from a team that has gone off the rails in recent weeks.

“The problem with Ndlovu is we had other players available, Wayde was injured, Mabaso was injured, Monyane was injured – that was the problem why we had Ndlovu [at right-back],” Zinnbauer explained.

“Ndlovu is very flexible in midfield too, he can play eight, he can also maybe six or wide or 10 positions and we are happy about this but the reason in the last [few games] we didn’t have players available.

“Wayde comes closer [to full fitness] and he gets minutes after he signalled he is ready and he gave a top performance, Man of the Match – he was involved in most of our offensive actions.

“If he keeps giving these performances there won’t be any more discussions about who we play in that position.”

Raja Casablanca looming for Orlando Pirates

Orlando Pirates turn their attention to Stellenbosch FC whom they face on Tuesday 11 May before welcoming Raja Casablanca for the first leg of their Caf Confederation Cup quarterfinal next weekend.

Zinnbauer has bemoaned Orlando Pirates’ bad luck when it comes to cup draws this season, and it seems the Moroccan giants are already occupying the German’s thoughts.

“At the moment with [the] draws we haven’t had luck, remember with the Nedbank Cup we got [Mamelodi Sundowns] – normally for supporters would [have] been the best final but we cannot wish what we want,” he said.

“We get it and the next step is now, for me, one of the best teams in, not just the quarter-final but in the whole of Africa. Raja is a big club, last season they were in the Super Cup final, the year before they won the Confederation Cup, they are a big team with big supporters at home like Pirates – I think we can compare this with Pirates or Kaizer Chiefs.

“For me it’s unlucky but on the other side you can say we have to focus on a big team, we can’t go too casual in the game like against Enyimba – not that I’m saying it’s a bad team or small club – but the performance could have been better. We can play better, but Raja, I know 100 percent the players know this is one of the best teams on the continent of Africa.”

May 7th 2021 at 07:06

But will Chiefs be getting what they are hoping for from the said players?

TheSouthAfrican.com has compiled a report card for each of the 13 players linked with possible moves to Naturena, excluding Phathutshedzo Nange as he was recently confirmed as a Chiefs player for next season.

SIPHO MBULE

Mbule is one of players Amakhosi are reportedly serious about signing in the new season.

His four goals and five assists in 24 matches for SuperSport United this season are what have made teams such as Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns tussle for his signature.

BRADLEY GROBLER

Grobler is a veteran striker but he’s been playing like a youngster, especially this season as he continues to lead the PSL goalscoring charts with 13 goals from 22 league matches.

Chiefs aren’t the only team reported to be after the signature of the Bafana Bafana international. Orlando Pirates also believed to be interested in the 33-year-old.

BRENDON PETERSEN

Petersen didn’t play competitive football this season as he was nursing an injury.

The 26-year-old, however, is not new in the PSL having already amassed 59 professional appearances since his breakthrough in 2013.

Petersen managed 18 clean sheets and conceded 66 goals in those 59 matches across all competitions.

NJABULO NGCOBO

Ngcobo (26) is a wanted man both in Tshwane and Naturena and Swallows have a tough decision to make as to whom they will do business with.

As a centre-back, Ngcobo has been rock-solid for Swallows this season. He has featured 25 times for the Dube Birds and found the back of the net once.

S’FISO HLANTI

Hlanti is one of the top players currently on the books of Swallows and reports suggested he will definitely move to Chiefs next season.

The 31-year-old started out brightly at Swallows but he appears to have fallen down the pecking order with just 13 league appearances and a single goal this season.

RUZAIGH GAMILDIEN

Gamildien has reportedly struck a deal with Chiefs but neither party has confirmed anything.

He has scored three goals and recorded two assists in 19 league matches for the Dobsonville-based outfit.

LELETU SKELEM

Skelem is another attacking midfielder who has taken the PSL by storm despite being 22-years-old.

The speedy attacker has netted just once for Stellenbosch this season but it is his work rate that has caught the eye of many PSL teams including Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

KATLEGO MOHAMME

Mohamme, a former SuperSport United player, is one of AmaTuks’ stars and has featured regularly for the Tshwane side.

The 23-year-old youth international has made 22 appearances across all competitions for AmaTuks this season without finding the back of the net.

AKANI CHAUKE

Chauke (25) is a strong striker for TS Sporting, and this is not the first time he’s linked with a possible move to Kaizer Chiefs.

After netting 10 goals in 29 matches for TS Sporting last season, Chauke became the hot topic but then Chiefs were banned from signing players.

THABANI DUBE

Dube is a 28-year-old centre-back who plays for Richards Bay FC in the GladAfrica Championship.

And while he’s a defender, Dube has a knack for goals as he’s netted six goals in 30 matches for the KwaZulu-Natal-based outfit this season.

VUSIMUZI MNCUBE

Mncube (27) is currently on the books of JDR Stars in the GladAfrica Championship, and he could soon find himself back in the PSL and possibly with Chiefs.

He is a right winger who has featured in 25 competitive matches for JDR Stars this season – 23 in the league and two in the Nedbank Cup.

Mamelodi Sundowns to beat Kaizer Chiefs to Sipho Mbule transfer?

May 7th 2021 at 06:30

Mamelodi Sundowns are set to beat Kaizer Chiefs to the signature of highly sought after SuperSport United midfielder Sipho Mbule, according to reports.

Chiefs’ interest in the South African junior international has been highly publicized throughout the season, despite their transfer ban from FIFA. After watching on from the sidelines as their rivals strengthened their squads for two consecutive windows, the log will reflect that Amakhosi have fallen considerably behind them.

It’s set to be a busy window at Kaizer Chiefs

If media reports are to be believed, the Soweto giants are set for an extreme squad overhaul designed to help them mount a swift climb back up to the top. The likes of Phathutshedzo Nange, S’fiso Hlanti, Brandon Petersen, Njabulo Ngcobo, Ruzaigh Gamilden as well Buhle Mkhwanazi are some of the names the media has suggested could be seen in the famous Black and Gold next season.

Gavin Hunt in danger of missing out on top target

One of the names that coach Gavin Hunt is believed to have very high on his transfer wish list is that of the highly skilful Mbule. However, in recent weeks it has been widely reported that the 22-year-old has emerged as a top transfer target for SuperSport’s Tshwane neighbours Sundowns too. In fact, recent reports as per The Citizen have even gone as far as stating they have overtaken Chiefs in the race for his signature.

Mbule key to Sundowns rebuilding phase

“Sundowns have an ageing central midfield, with the likes of Tiyani Mabunda, Andile Jali and Hlompho Kekana all over thirty years of age. Even George (Maluleka) who was signed last season from Chiefs is also over 30, so they want to revamp that position” said the source as he explained the Brazilians pursuit of Mbule.

Both teams will have to break the bank

Earlier a Supersport source had sent out a transfer message to Chiefs, stating that the Glamour Boys would have to pay top dollar for their academy product, if they were to sell. That statement has seemed to put Sundowns ahead of the Naturena-based side, as they showed with the signing of Aubrey Modiba from Supersport last season, that they aren’t afraid to splash the cash for their top targets.

READ | SHOW US THE MONEY: SUPERSPORT SEND KAIZER CHIEFS TRANSFER MESSAGE

If these latest reports are accurate, they would prove to be a massive blow to the Chiefs faithful, who, after the disappoints of the last six years would be desperate to see players of the calibre of Mbule walking through the Kaizer Chiefs village.

Mamelodi Sundowns to recall Phakamani Mahlambi from rivals AmaZulu

May 7th 2021 at 06:25

Phakamani Mahlambi will return to parent club Mamelodi Sundowns when his loan spell at AmaZulu concludes, according to agent Glyn Binkin.

The 23-year-old Phakamani Mahlambi was deemed surplus to requirements at Chloorkop at the start of the current season, and was consequently sent out on loan to Usuthu.

The former Bidvest Wits youth player has only made three appearances for AmaZulu across all competitions so far, and Binkin has revealed that he will return to Masandawana ahead of next season.

“He’s got a contract with Sundowns, he’s going back to Sundowns for sure,” Binkin told KickOff.

“Ask AmaZulu what the situation is, the team is doing well… he’s not playing at the moment but the team is doing well, they are second on the log so I fully respect the coach and his decision, and the players that are playing for him are doing very well.

“So Phakamani must be patient. Hopefully he gets a chance soon. But he’s a Sundowns player so he goes back to Sundowns at the end of the season. Find out from AmaZulu if there’s another reason [for his lack of game time]. No, there’s no other reason.”

Mamelodi Sundowns currently lead the DStv Premiership standings with 54 points after 25 matches.

They are four points ahead of second-place AmaZulu and also have a game in hand.

Itumeleng Khune on his way out of Kaizer Chiefs? Wants a new challenge

May 7th 2021 at 04:30

Long-serving Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has reportedly turned down a contract offer from the club, in favour of a new challenge.

Once an undisputed starter for both club and country, Khune has not been able to enjoy those type of privileges anymore with a mixture of injuries and a loss of form contributing to his apparent decline. The likes of Daniel Akpeyi and Rowen Williams have since capitalised on his misfortunes for both club and country respectively.

After recent travails, Khune is looking for a change of scene

Now having failed to convince both Ernst Middendorp and current coach Gavin Hunt of his first-choice keeper credentials, it is reported that a change of scenery is high on his list of priorities for next season according to The Citizen. Khune has endured yet another indifferent season at Chiefs with all of a loss of form, injuries as well as the loss of his sister all contributing to that.

READ | ITUMELENG STRIPPED OF KAIZER CHIEFS CAPTAINCY BY GAVIN HUNT

He has also become prone to costly mistakes at the back, which have forced his side to pay with a loss of points. That coupled with his regular presence on social media has made him an easy target for clubs supporters to voice their displeasure about. The fans have not been the only ones that have made their feels known about the Bafana Bafana international, however.

Khune has failed to cement his spot as number one under Gavin Hunt

Hunt has also been vocal in post-match interviews about some of Khune’s schoolboy errors that have led to goals, even going as far as dropping the veteran from matchday squads completely. He can count himself fortunate, however, as Akpeyi has proven not to be as reliable this season as he was in the previous campaign.

He has become a revitalised of late

In recent weeks Khune has seemed a rejuvenated figure however, with big performances against Baroka, Horoya, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, he has shown flashes of his former self. Khune showing that form is temporary and class is permanent has perhaps, justified his controversial call up to the last Bafana Bafana squad as well.

Could those performances be his way of saying his goodbyes on a good note to the club’s supporters?

Akumu joined Chiefs in January 2020 when Ernst Middendorp was still the club’s head coach.

TheSouthAfrican.com has gathered that Akumu’s name made the list of players Gavin Hunt wants to release in order to make space for the incoming players.

According to a source at Naturena, who has requested to remain anonymous, Akumu’s future is being discussed extensively at the top level.

“The technical team feels Akumu hasn’t done enough and they believe someone else can do better in his place next season,” the source told TheSouthAfrican.com.

“His future is definitely being discussed at the management level, and him not playing lately means Hunt is already planning for life without him,” added the source.

Akumu has featured in 21 competitive matches under Hunt this season – and his versatility was expected to give him the advantage of his teammates.

He arrived as a central midfielder but in January, Hunt publicly refused to agree that Akumu was a midfielder, and he later turned him into a central defender.

However, even when Daniel Cardoso and Erick Mathoho were ruled out of the match against Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila this week, Hunt still overlooked Akumu.

George Lebese SENT HOME from Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila!

Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila coach Dylan Kerr has explained why former Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs winger George Lebese has been released by the club.

It comes just a month after George Lebese was announced as a new signing following the termination of his contract with Major Soccer League (MLS) outfit Colorado Switchbacks.

However, it has now transpired that because the 32-year-old cancelled his contract outside of the registered FIFA transfer window, he has been unable to register with the Limpopo-based club.

“As far as I know George is no longer with us due to his work visa. We can’t get a FIFA clearance for him. So I think George agreed, I don’t know because I’m not seeing him,” Kerr said ahead of the Chippa United showdown this weekend.

“I think George has gone home and I don’t know if he’s still part of TTM, but I can understand his frustration, when he came, he was way off the pace.

“I mean we’d be risking serious injury if we did play him in a competitive game because he’s not been training and he has not played [a match] since November.

“So he was a long way short of the rest of the squad and we tried very very hard to get his ITC, but the legalities of it in America… he was already contracted to that club, he wasn’t really a free agent, so we couldn’t really sign him.”

“Maritzburg is not an easy team for anyone, and I always tell people Ernst (Middendorp) is one of the top coaches. He may have been unlucky, but his strategies at times can put you off. Kaizer Chiefs and Gavin Hunt in transfer targets disagreement?

May 6th 2021 at 01:30

Kaizer Chiefs Coach Gavin Hunt and the club management are reportedly at loggerheads with regards to transfer targets.

The Glamour Boys were slapped with a two transfer window ban by FIFA in the middle of last season, as their signing of Malagasy international midfielder Andriamirado ‘Dax’ Andrianarimanana was deemed illegal. Chiefs, however, were determined to go down fighting, but their appeal was eventually dismissed by the world football governing body.

The lengthy period between the appeal and its dismissal coincided with one of vast uncertainty. The longer it dragged on, the more optimism it seemed to give Hunt. During that period he invited three of his former Bidvest Wits players to train with Chiefs. S’fiso Hlanti, Phathutshedzo Nange as well as Brandon Petersen were all pictured at Naturena, being put through their paces.

Gavin Hunt had already started to show his hand with Kaizer Chiefs transfer targets

It is no secret those players had been called in with the view of Hunt reuniting with them at Chiefs. The fact that the Chiefs management even permitted those players to train with their side might have been an indication of the faith they had in Hunt’s transfer choices.

Gavin Hunt now seems to have lost the wholehearted backing from Chiefs

Fast forward almost a year and somewhat strangely that confidence seems to have been evoked from the veteran mentor. According to The Citizen Hunt had given the club’s management a list of his desired transfer targets, which the management appear unconvinced by.

READ | KAIZER CHIEFS TO SIGN 13 NEW PLAYERS AMAKHOSI TARGETS REVEALED

One of those players Hunt might have to find an alternative for may well be one of his most reliable players at Wits, in the form of Buhle Mkhwanazi. Mkhwanazi had started forging quite a mean reputation for himself, with his combination with current Orlando Pirates player Thulani Hlatshwayo providing a solid base for the ‘Clever Boys’ to attack from.

Salary demands could stand in the way of Hunt reuniting with Mkhwanazi next season

Even though his part in that partnership saw him catapulted into a Bafana Bafana mainstay together with Hlatshwayo, it hasn’t seemed to convince the Chiefs management that he will be worth his weight in gold.

“The issue is his salary demands. The club feels it is too high for a player who has been out of action for almost a year now. But the coach is insistent on him as one of the key players he plans to build his team with going forward” A source revealed.

It is clear that he will be challenged with every transfer target

This may come as a worry for Hunt, as it is now a second reported veto of his transfer target by the Amakhosi management. It was also recently reported that Moroka Swallows striker Ruzaigh Gamilden was the subject of doubt from owner Kaizer Motaung Senior who eventually conceded after being outvoted by the management.

With his management staff now seemingly the ones unconvinced, it remains to be seen whether Hunt will eventually get his way with this one too. Watch the space.

Gavin Hunt calls for Kaizer Chiefs to find mental fortitude

May 5th 2021 at 23:00

Hunt’s side slumped to their ninth defeat of the season, which also meant they failed to break into the top eight and could finish in the bottom half of the table for the second time in three seasons not to mention the seven-year trophy drought and counting.

The Amakhosi were reduced to 10 men when Njabulo Blom received a second yellow card in the 38th minute before Thabo Rakhale opened the scoring four minutes later.

Lebogang Manyama equalised in the 66th minute but Amakhosi hearts were broken not for the first time this season when Thabo Mnyamane’s penalty in the eighth minute of stoppage time gave Vhadau Vha Damani all three points.

“Ja I thought we were well in the game obviously until the red-card but we stayed in the front foot, made changes at half-time to stay in the front foot,” Hunt told SuperSport TV.

“Tried to get something to play towards and we did well, we got the goal and if we had a little bit of care upfront sometimes we could have done better.

“We didn’t hold it or gave it away cheaply and obviously we got turned over but we were right in the game, obviously they gonna come out with extra numbers, overload us,” he said.

Former Amakhosi midfielder George Lebese has been sent home by DStv Premiership outfit Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila.

The 32-year-old midfielder was set to sign a short term deal with the Limpopo based outfit after being forced to part ways with American outfit Colorado Switchbacks FC.

The former Amakhosi midfielder was unable to return back to America for what would have been his second season at Switchbacks FC due to strict COVID-19 travel protocols however his contract in America is still legally binding making him unable to sign for Tshakhuma as a free agent.

Former Amakhosi star George Lebese stuck in limbo

George Lebese had been training with Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila for a number of weeks with many expecting him to make his debut before the end of the season however it wasn’t to be.

Tshakhuma head coach Dylan Kerr confirmed that the former Amakhosi and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder has been sent home due contractual complications that make it impossible for the club to sign him at this stage.

“Well, as far as I know, George Lebese is no longer with us due to his work visa. We can’t get a FIFA clearance for him.” Dylan Kerr said regarding the former Amakhosi and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder.

“So, I think George agreed, I don’t know because I’m not seeing him. I think George has gone home and I don’t know if he’s still part of TTM. But I can understand his frustration, when he came, he was way off the pace. “So he was a long way short off the rest of the squad and we tried very, very hard to get his ITC, but the legalities of it in America… he was already contracted to that club, he wasn’t really a free agent, so we couldn’t really sign him.”

George lebese’s debut season abroad saw him earn two goals and two assists in 16 USLC appearances. He’ll now have to wait for his clearance from America before he plot his next move.

He left the Amakhosi for Mamelodi Sundowns back in 2017 and has ever since struggled to replicate the deadly form he showed for the Glamour Boys.

“Not the best but business-like. We wanted to win the match. We had to give ourselves to the team and everybody ran because we knew we were playing against a very complicated team,” Mngqithi told SuperSport TV.

“Maritzburg is not an easy team for anyone, and I always tell people Ernst (Middendorp) is one of the top coaches. He may have been unlucky, but his strategies at times can put you off. We knew it was not going to be an easy one, and we had to take the few chances that we got and we were fortunate on the day to get a penalty.

Sundowns pressing machine

“Gift’s work and the group to try and give us a high-press and from there we get something it’s always good for the team and also the second goal I think he took it very well. And we’ve always known he is one of the best finishers in the country.

“I even spoke to him before the match (and told him) today is your day to score and when he scored he immediately pointed at me because he knew that I had told him that today is your day and I was very happy for that.”

Backroom big-ups

“But more than anything else I want to give credit to my technical team, coach Rhulani (Mokwena), Steve (Komphela), coach Wendell (Robinson)for the clean sheet. The analysts, I think they are always spot on.

“The medical department for getting everybody into the team, the support staff, there’s very good things happening behind the scenes and the management of the team has been very supportive.

“In all our troubles and our journeys, they have been there and once again I want to thank the president and the board of the club because the resources we have sometimes, they make it easier for us to compete on all fronts under circumstances that are very difficult because when you count the number of matches that these players are expected to play. It’s very difficult and I really want to thank them for that,” Mngqithi added.

Dylan Kerr fumes at decision to award Kaizer Chiefs penalty – watch

May 5th 2021 at 12:29

Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila head coach Dylan Kerr was disappointed in the refereeing decision that led to Kaizer Chiefs equalising from the penalty spot in his side’s 2-1 victory over the Amakhosi at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday.

READ | HUGO BROOS: 10 THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT THE NEW BAFANA COACH

TTM took the lead through Thabo Rakhale in the 42nd minute, four minutes after Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Njabulo Blom picked up a second yellow card.

And then in the 66th minute, Samir Nurkovic fell to the turf under Ayanda Nkili’s challenge with the referee initially not pointing to the spot but after consulting with his linesman, he then decided to award the penalty.

And Dylan Kerr said it didn’t make any sense for the referee to overturn his decision as he was 10 metres away from the incident as opposed to the linesman, who was much further away.

MUST READ | SAFA CONFIRMS HUGO BROOS’ CONTRACT DETAILS

“We got the winner in the end but I’m disappointed with the penalty decisions, because the referee is the one making decisions in the game of football, to come all the way here to speak to the linesman and the fourth official and ask an opinion when he’s the boss in the park, that’s just totally wrong,” vented Dylan Kerr.

“I know Gavin [Hunt], if it was a penalty fair enough but the referee has to make that judgement, he’s the man in charge, not the fourth official, not the linesman, they are there to assist him.

“But if you look at the distance from the fourth official to the linesman, they are so far away, the referee is ten metres away and he’s given the call, goalkick but great character, we kept on going and that’s the pleasing thing for me.”

The decision ultimately did not come back to haunt Vhadau Vha Damani as they would claim all three points courtesy of Thabo Mnyamane’s spot-kick deep into stoppage time.

“The players dug in deep, even with ten men. When you’re playing [against] ten men, as we found out against Cape Town City, we kept on going unfortunately the result didn’t go for us,” said the Malta-born English tactician.

“We’re playing against ten men but ten men is always a tough game to beat, credit to the players we kept forcing it, we made too many wrong decisions in and around the penalty area.

“I think ‘Zizou’ our number ten [Celimpilo Ngema] he could have scored two goals but you gotta be confident and have that special belief to shoot, one is across the face of goal and one it’s on the side-netting.

“But credit to everybody, my staff, the chairman is gonna be happy and on the personal note that’s my first win against Gavin Hunt, he’s a very good friend of mine, football is about three points and we got three points today, I’m pleased for the players,” Dylan Kerr concluded.

Kaizer Chiefs fans reach boiling point, protest plans revealed!

May 5th 2021 at 11:21

Kaizer Chiefs fans have reached boiling point and are scheduling a ‘planned protest’ at Naturena to voice their concerns regarding the way the club is being run.

Kaizer Chiefs are going through arguably one of the worst spells in the club’s 50-year history after having gone five years without a title.

Their current state is almost pitiable with Gavin Hunt’s side sitting just above the relegation zone with just four games to go in the DStv Premiership. The club were humiliated by rivals Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 while minnows Richard’s Bay dumped them out of the Nedbank Cup at the first hurdle.

Kaizer Chiefs fans reach boiling point

It’s no secret that Kaizer Chiefs have the largest fan base in the country, and with this comes much expectation. The Amakhosi have been one of the biggest clubs, if not the biggest, in the country for half a century.

SOCCER QUIZ | Answer these easy questions & win R1 000 in cash!

Things at Naturena however have spiraled out of control at Kaizer Chiefs over recent years and the once giant of South African football is slowly losing its position.

As shown in recent weeks, teams battling to stay alive in the league like Chippa United and Tshakhuma have happily walked away with a full three points from the Glamour Boys without breaking much of a sweat and fans have now reached boiling point!

Kaizer Chiefs fans are fed up and will now force management to listen to their demands via a scheduled protest with the hope of making the club great again.

The proposed date was 8th of May (This coming Saturday)

However we might be forced to change the date as we still need to make KC Officials aware of our planned visit and hopefully they will welcome us with open arms.

Should you have any suggestion, please feel free to do so. pic.twitter.com/6r8mxlU9u1

— MW (@MWTlali) May 5, 2021

The protest which was originally scheduled for 08 May by Kaizer Chiefs fans has been postponed. Amongst the topics fans would like to address with management are the club’s transfer policy as well possible interference in on-field decisions by management.

However, the midfielder has fallen out of favour at Chloorkop as co-coaches Manqoba Mngqithi, Rhulani Mokwena and Steve Komphela have preferred to play Rivaldo Coetzee, Andile Jali and Mothobi Mvala in the middle of the park.

Cape Town City set to replace Riekerink with Tinkler – report

May 4th 2021 at 12:23

Cape Town City are reportedly set to replace coach Jan Olde Riekerink with former mentor Eric Tinkler.

According to Daily Sun, Riekerink will be sacked following City’s decision to place him on ‘administrative leave’ on Monday.

READ | WATCH NOW: PITSO MOSIMANE’S SON SHOWS OFF HIS FOOTBALL SKILLS AT AL AHLY!

While City didn’t reveal the reason behind placing the Dutch mentor on administrative leave, the publication reports that this was because the coach had clashed with some of the players.

Now, the Citizens are believed to be considering Tinkler as a possible replacement, and it is reported that the former Orlando Pirates coach would be joining the Mother City-based side alongside Vincent Kobola as his assistant.

Kobola is currently employed as an assistant coach at Baroka FC while Tinkler is still not attached to any team following his departure from Maritzburg United at the start of the season.

Should the reports prove to be true, Tinkler and Kobola would be returning to the team they led between 2016 and 2017.

Tinkler was the head coach in City’s first season in the PSL, and he would leave the club a year later after receiving an enticing offer from SuperSport United.

At the time, Kobola had already retired from playing and was working hand-in-hand with Tinkler in the Cape Town City technical team.

Pirates played Enyimba away on 28 April, meaning they only had a three-day window to return home and plan for table-toppers Sundowns.

Sundowns hammered the Buccaneers 3-0 on the day, and while the majority blame Zinnbauer and the club’s defence, in particular Thulani Hlatshwayo for the loss, the German mentor saw things differently.

“We had no training session. You need power for this game. It’s always the same players on the field,” said Zinnbauer after the game.

“It wasn’t our defensive structure that was the problem; it was more concentration from the passing line,” he added.

Pirates will be at home again against Black Leopards on 5 May, and they will look to return to winning ways and improve their position on the PSL log.

Kick-off for that encounter is at 5PM.

‘Themba Zwane is my dream signing!’ – Chiefs head coach

May 3rd 2021 at 00:54

Another GladAfrica Championship manager has identified Mamelodi Sundowns ace Themba Zwane as his dream signing.

Days after the iconic Jomo Sono claimed his ideal transfer target would be Mamelodi Sundowns star and reigning PSL player of the Season Themba Zwane should his side gain promotion to the top flight.

Another second tier coach has claimed that ‘Mshishi’, as Themba Zwane is affectionately known as, would be his dream signing.

Themba Zwane is my dream signing – Bizana Pondo Chiefs coach

“For me when I look at South African football now, the best player in the country is Themba Zwane.” Chiefs head coach Clinton Larsen told KickOff regarding his dream signing.

“It’s my opinion. People can disagree with me but it’s my opinion. So if I say he’s the best player in South Africa currently, it would mean that any coach would want him in the team. Am I right? So for me that’s the player. He’s been very consistent with his performances for the last two to three seasons. So I rate him very, very highly, I think he’s really, really a top class player.

“He’s learned how to defend. When you look at his impact in terms of what he brings offensively to the team his playmaking ability. Every coach wants a player who retains possession, who is creative, who can play between the lines, play in the half spaces, has a high level of game intelligence, Themba Zwane got all these things you know. And he’s scoring to his repertoire as well you know. So, he’s a complete midfielder that you’ll never get anywhere in the continent.”

Clinton Larsen’s Bizana Pondo Chiefs currently sit in 16th place on the GladAfrica Championship log standings with just four games to go and will need someone like Themba Zwane to rescue them!

The newly promoted Chiefs are seven points behind 15th placed Steenberg United and nine points behind Cape Town Spurs who are in 14th place and will require a miracle to survive relegation.

Maema pulled the first goal back for Phunya Sele Sele after receiving a backheel from Ndumiso Mabena to side-foot past Amakhosi goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi.

And the 25-year-old said that despite Kaizer Chiefs’ woes and six-year trophy drought, they are still the best team in the country.

“First of all, I want to thank the Lord Jesus Christ for this opportunity,” Maema told SuperSport TV.

“It was tough going 2-0 down in the first 20 minutes. It wasn’t easy for us to come back. But I’m glad that we got a point.

“It’s like the 26th game of the season so it wasn’t easy. The muscles. Especially going towards the end of the game.”

Benni McCarthy calls on a favour from Orlando Pirates

May 2nd 2021 at 07:20

AmaZulu coach Benni McCarthy has called on Orlando Pirates to do the country and his side a favour and make the title race more interesting by beating Mamelodi Sundowns at the Orlando Stadium on Sunday.

READ | BENNI MCCARTHY: THREE PROS AND CONS FOR TAKING THE BAFANA BAFANA JOB

Kick-off is at 15:00.

Usuthu claimed a 1-0 win over Golden Arrows in the Durban derby at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium on Saturday which took them two points ahead of former league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, but crucially having played two more games.

It might just be the perfect time for the Buccaneers to face the Brazilians, who are on a four-match winless run.

And Benni McCarty wants an Orlando Pirates win not just for his side but for the fans, whom he says deserve an exciting finish to the season after being restricted from attending matches for a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Now we’ll see how the magic unfolds (today), hoping Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns provide a very good game. We’ll see what happens in that match and we are hoping it becomes interesting,” said Benni McCarthy.

“In the year that we’ve had, with Covid-19 and the new Dstv Premiership title and all the excitement that it provides, you want it to go to the last day of the season.

“I hope that Pirates do the country and everyone a favor, by doing what they should be doing. They can’t be hammered three times in a row by one team.

“So I’m backing my boys in black, hopefully they come through for us and then we take it further down to the wire with Sundowns, because that’s what the fans need.

“That’s what the fans need, because they are not allowed to come to the stadium. So if they can’t be here let’s give them something to really sit on the edge of the seat until the last match of the season.”

Speaking after the game, Gavin Hunt told SuperSport: “Well it’s the story of our season. It’s the old adage – strikers win you games and defenders win you leagues. Not that we try to defend but we concede goals every week. It’s been poor.

“We have to get better. We work on it all the time. Lot of individual stuff.”

“I mean we created enough chances today to win three games of football. First half could have been 4-0. We had so many opportunities.

Percy Tau could start for Brighton against Leeds United

May 1st 2021 at 07:25

An injury to Adam Lallana has put Percy Tau in contention to start Brighton’s Premier League clash with Leeds United.

Tau hasn’t featured in a matchday squad for Brighton since returning from international duty. The 26-year-old was forced into an extended quarantine as part of lockdown regulations after returning from South Africa.

Percy Tau could start for Brighton

Brighton boss Graham Potter says the South African star is back in contention to face Leeds United on Saturday afternoon. It would be Tau’s first Premier Leage start since the club’s reverse fixture against Leeds in January.

The knock to Lallana could see Tau handed a starting berth in the number 10 role that the former Liverpool man has made his own this term. Potter had previously expressed a desire to deploy Tau in the role which he feels the former Mamelodi Sundowns star is better suited to than a striking or winger position.

“Adam Lallana had a bit of a tight calf and has been recovering. Hopefully he will train on Friday, but there’s nothing fresh apart from the Sheffield United game,” Potter told the club’s official website.

‘His chances of playing are OK, we will make a decision on him after Friday’s session. Percy Tau trained this week, so he’s back in contention.”

Tau had endured a frustrating run where he was named on Brighton’s bench for ten matches in a row without getting onto the park.

Seagulls eager to bounce back

Potter hopes that Brighton can pick themselves up after a dissapointing loss to basement boys Sheffield United as they seek to secure Premier League football next season.

“Prior to last Saturday’s disappointing defeat at Sheffield United, it had been a very good period for us, where we picked up valuable points against European-chasing Everton and Chelsea,” Potter wrote in his match programme notes.

“Last time out at the Amex, I thought we were the team most likely to win, but Everton defended well when they needed to. We nullified their attacking threat but just lacked that bit of quality in the final third to get ourselves over the line. Overall, though, I was pleased with the performance and the intent we showed against a very good side.”

Brighton will face Leeds from 16:00 (SAST) on Saturday 1 May.

Celtic vs Kaizer Chiefs: Amakhosi fully focused in Bloem

May 1st 2021 at 06:58

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Nkosingiphile Ngcobo believes the team and can still put a positive spin on their season.

Ngcobo admitted that things haven’t gone Kaizer Chiefs way this term but said there were enough positives in recent weeks to suggest that the tough times won’t last.

Amakhosi fully focused in Bloem

“As the league is coming towards the end now, I think it hasn’t been a great season for us as a team but I think there are a lot of positives that we can take and build on them,” Ngcobo said in his pre-match media address.

“It was a season which was not good, but I think somewhere we did well in the CAF – we broke some records. We just have to keep our heads up and finish the season in a better position.”

Kaizer Chiefs need to be sharper in front of goal

Kaizer Chiefs have been made to pay for their profligacy in front of goal this season and Ngcobo highlighted their early missed chances against Chippa as where the team went wrong last time out.

“I missed the game [as an unused substitute] against Mamelodi Sundowns but I really think as a team we did very well. We played with confidence. We applied the plan correctly and we managed to get three points,” he added.

“After that, I came back against Chippa United where things didn’t go our way. We lost the game, and I think we should have scored in the first 30 minutes but we couldn’t, so we just have to focus on our next game which is Bloemfontein Celtic.

“It won’t be easy, but we are prepared, and we will make sure that we go there and get maximum points.”

Depending on results elsewhere, Kaizer Chiefs could move back into the top eight with a win over Celtic in Bloemfontein.

Kaizer Chiefs key transfer target banished by his PSL club!

April 30th 2021 at 23:51

Kaizer Chiefs target Taariq Fielies has reportedly been banished from the Cape Town City squad following their 5-1 thumping at the hands of AmaZulu.

Cape Town City were handed a shocking 5-1 loss during their midweek fixture against former manager Benni McCarthy’s AmaZulu and the Kaizer Chiefs linked defender has reportedly earned the wrath of Jan Olde Riekerink following the loss.

Cape Town City’s Taariq Fielies alongside Buhle Mkhwanazi and Swallows FC’s Njabulo Ngcobo have been identified as the Amakhosi’s primary targets to solve their leaking defence that have already conceded 28 goals this season.

Fielies who was roped in at Cape Town City by former manager Benni McCarthy has reportedly been expelled from Jan Olde Riekerink’s squad after showing little remorse following his side’s shock loss against AmaZulu.

“I would have to ask the coach what happened because I am not aware that he has not travelled with the team,” Cape Town City chairman John Comitis told the same publication regarding the Kaizer Chiefs target.

“The coach and the player had a meeting yesterday, that I know. But I don’t know what happened in that meeting.”

Fielies opens up about transfer ambitions

“Obviously my mind is still here, but as a player you also want to achieve silverware and go test yourself at bigger clubs.” Fielies said last month following reported interest from Kaizer Chiefs.

“I won’t say Cape Town City is a small club, I just mean basically a new club that is well established also, in Joburg or whatever. I would like to take on the opportunity, everyone wants to go on a journey where there’s different stories and different experiences.

“I’ve spent enough time at this club to establish myself. I feel now is the right time to go on a different journey and hopefully me and the chairman (Comitis) can come to some sort of agreement if there’s a suitable offer.”

Fielies has reportedly been dropped from Jan Olde Riekerink’s squad that will face TS Galaxy later today while his long-term future at Cape Town City is also up in smoke. This will undoubtedly leave clubs like Kaizer Chiefs and other potential suitors watching on with a keen eye.

With four minutes gone Swallows centre-back Njabulo Ngcobo miscontrolled the ball allowing Bongokuhle Hlongwane to pounce and feed in Thabiso Kutumela on the left and he cut back inside before curling a decent effort narrowly over the bar.

In the 20th minute, Givemore Khupe was shown a yellow card for a foul on Hlongwane on the edge of the box however Kutumela’s free-kick lacked the direction. Soon after, Maritzburg midfielder Daylon Claasen’s flick-on found Hlongwane, who struck from range but it went wide of the left-hand upright.

Hlongwane and Kutumela combined again as the former played in the latter down the left and he squared the ball back into the box to Claasen, who scuffed his shot and it fell into the path of Hlongwane, whose left-footed effort on the turn was straight at Swallows shot-stopper Virgil Vries.

Maritzburg took the lead in the 49th minute. Graham intercepted a sloppy pass from Swallows central defender Wandisile Letlabika and some neat one-touch football saw the ball returned to Graham and he struck a fierce shot into the corner from a tight angle on the right-hand side of the box from close-range.

The Birds equalised 10 minutes later. Musa Nyatama released Zaphaniah Mbokoma down the right and he delivered into the box to Hlanti, who side-footed the ball as it came across him into the bottom left corner for a superb finish.

The Team of Choice had a good opportunity to double the lead soon after. Bandile Shandu played an excellent one-two with Hlongwane and surged into the box but his effort missed slightly to the left.

In the 73rd minute, Dan Morgan raced around Ngcobo and fed in Kutumela and his shot was saved in the bottom right corner.

The last clear-cut chance of the encounter fell to the Team of Choice. The ball was delivered into the box and centre-back Clayton Daniels rose highest but it went over the bar as the sides had to settle for the share of the spoils.
